  1. I'm glad you like the series so far. I hear what you're saying about the name being redundant, which was intentional. For me part of the fun of making concept teams is trying things that aren't necessarily conventional or common in the real world. And there actually was a Colorado-based hockey team called the Rocky Mountain Rage so there is a precedent with the name. I want to avoid using real team names in recent history so that eliminates 'Colorado 14ers'. Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho have no professional sports teams so this name could also make them feel included in the fan base, even if distantly. If I do end up changing my mind on this, which is always possible, I'd probably go with Denver.
  2. The next team is based in Colorado so, big surprise, it has a mountain theme. 14er is a term used to describe any peak over 14,000 feet, and 53 of the US's 96 fourteeners are located in Colorado (thanks Wikipedia). I remember visiting my uncle in Colorado and as we drove through the mountains he talked about these peaks called 14ers, and I thought that there should be a team with that name. And there did. There used to be an NBA G-League team called the Colorado 14ers so the name might sound familiar. On the jerseys, I included lines sloping upward at the exact same angle as the mountains in the logo. It ended up having a Trail Blazers look to it.
  3. If I do make alts at some point, it would definitely be that sandstone color.
  4. Thanks! Sometimes simple side striping like this works best.
  5. I've gone back and made some tweaks to the Ambassadors jerseys. The trimming and colors are now more consistent between the two sets. Now moving out west, the next team is the Arizona Desert Demons. Again, based on a team I made as a kid. The name may have been inspired by the Wake Forest Demon Deacons but I really don't remember. For the logo, I tweaked and repurposed an old EBA logo I made (the Diablos) since it works perfectly for this team. This is the only team of the 20 that has a human (well demon) in the logo. The jerseys are relatively simple and clean. I always liked college jerseys that have the school name split above and below the numbers so that's what you see on the black jersey. You can't really see the sides, but there are downward arrows/chevrons, and on the side of the shorts they frame the triangular part of the logo.
  6. They are meant to be fun... but hopefully still look good. lol. It wasn't my intention but that is true! After looking at the jerseys with a fresh set of eyes, I'm not really feeling the color contrast between the red pinstripes on the blue jerseys. I've decided I'm going to have the pinstripes more subtle on both sets, like they are currently on the red jersey, and possibly a new number font. I've already begun making tweaks and will update here.
  7. I appreciate all the positive feedback so far. Thanks! I'm happy with how Houston turned out. And there will be one more team from Texas to come. The next team is the DC Ambassadors. They would likely be rivals of the nearby Baltimore Barons. The logo evolved from an old EBA concept that I had previously made (the DC Generals) which also had three stars arranged with DC lettering. The idea of the three horizontal stars is taken from the Washington D.C. flag. The jerseys are inspired by the Harlem Globetrotters who wear blue tops and white shorts with thick red stripes. Rather than having the stripes be thick, I turned them into pinstripes that continue up into the jersey tops. Having shorts and jerseys in different colors is pretty uncommon in basketball but I felt this team could pull it off. The whole identity, from the jerseys to the red and white ball in the logo, is meant to have an ABA/Globetrotters feel to it. Updated Jerseys
  8. Glad you like it as a Floridian and thanks for following! To me "Thunderhawks" sounds like the type of name that would come from the 90s, which is part of the reason I like it. And I don't think it's used very much across the sports world. I do plan on making courts. I want to get a bunch of jerseys done first (since I find jerseys more challenging than courts), and then see if I any ideas for courts come to me over time. The next team probably won't be up til the weekend again.
  9. Thanks again! There will be some teams without logos on the front jerseys but if the logo seems to work on the jersey, like Tampa, I’m putting it there.
  10. The next team is the Tampa Thunderhawks. Like Baltimore above, this is based on a fictional team my older brother and I created as kids in the mid to late 90s. The team started out as the Tampa Thunder, then the Thunderbirds, and then the Thunderhawks. I don't remember for sure but I'm guessing the name was inspired by the Tampa Bay Lightning. Tropicana Field in St. Pete also used to be called the ThunderDome at that time, and the Tampa area is known to have a lot of lightning. The colors have always been blue and green, but I've lightened the green here. The logo features a geometrically stylized bird with sharp edges to match the angular lightning bolt. These jerseys are somewhat reminiscent of the Atlanta Hawks jerseys from the mid-90s which had their hawk logo with spread wings on the front jersey.
  11. 18 of the 20 cities are pretty much set, but 2 are still up in the air. There aren't enough Midwest teams so I was going to put another team in that region. It could be Cleveland, but I had a few other cities in mind. On the dark gray jersey, eliminating all white was intentional to give that set a dark feel, so I see where you're coming from. I liked how those few red lines contrasted brightly against the darker jersey. But on the logo and red jersey, I want to keep the letters white since white jumps out as being in the foreground while the dark gray buildings fall to the background. Gray looked muddled for the letters which are the focal point.
  12. Thanks! And I just updated the jerseys for Houston so now it's on to the next team. Team number 3 is the Baltimore Barons. The logo is meant to look more like your standard basketball logo with both the team name and ball. The story behind this logo starts with a fictional league I simulated as a kid. I had a team in Baltimore and their logo captured the skyline around the city's harbor in red and black. I recently re-created that logo and chose the name Barons (which is also the same name of the team in my previous EBA series). The composition of this logo is somewhat inspired by the Sacramento Kings and the jersey on the right is inspired by the dark gray jerseys the Brooklyn Nets wore with black trimming.
  13. Thanks! Glad you like. I appreciate it. And actually the very first draft didn't even have any waves, so this logo has evolved. Team number 3 should be up this weekend. This one will be an east coast city.
  14. I've gone back and updated the post with the Houston Hurricane logo based on feedback from MDTrey4. The hurricane now has waves on both sides to balance the composition.
  15. Many of these teams will not have alt logos. I didn't bother expanding beyond the primary logo if I felt the primary was solid enough on its own at any scale (similar in the way most NFL teams that don't bother utilizing alt logos) There is/was a basketball team called the Chautauqua Hurricane, singular, and for some reason that really jumped out at me as unique - as if the whole team is one hurricane moving in cohesion. Plus, it seemed to roll of the tongue easy with both city and nickname starting with an 'H' and ending on an 'N'. There will be a few other non-plural teams to come.
  16. Thank you. You can still find the old EBA thread on the first page of the "The Creamers and the Concepts Hall of Fame". I still have the vector files saved away, and a few of the EBA team names will make a reappearance here, although the logos themselves will be edited or completely different.
  17. I appreciate the feedback! I see what you're saying. I may add a small hint of waves on the right side to mirror the waves on the left. When making this, I did experiment with larger waves but the more the waves covered the state, the less recognizable the state was. I'll look into revisiting this. There is a lot going on in that space but I think I like it. At first I was just going to keep it safe and traditional with the team name slapped above a number like the navy jersey, but I decided to try something different.
  18. Thanks for the feedback so far, all. I'm staying in the south for the next team - the Houston Hurricane. The logo features the state of Texas encircled by a hurricane coming in from the Chihuahuan Desert of all places. The star shows the location of Houston on a map. I always like a good logo in the shape of a state outline, and Texas has pretty much the most recognizable shape so I knew exactly what I wanted to do with this one. With the light blue jersey, I took inspiration from the GS Warriors' jersey numbers that are positioned inside their logo. Updated Version 9/29/2021
  19. It’s been years since I posted anything on here, but I’ve been tinkering on logo concepts in my spare time over the years, and I’ve finally gotten around to compiling them into a 20-team basketball league I'm calling the USBL. EASTERN CONFERENCE: Baltimore Barons, Boston Bees, Chicago Cyclones, DC Ambassadors, Nashville Rhythm, New York Empire, Ohio Flight, Philadelphia Liberty, South Florida Crocodiles, Tampa Thunderhawks WESTERN CONFERENCE: Arizona Desert Demons, California Fire, Hawaii Tropics, Houston Hurricane, Las Vegas Stars, Minneapolis Owls, New Orleans Marauders, Rocky Mountain 14ers, Sacramento Miners, Texas Toros Some of the teams are carryovers from a previous concept series that I posted on these boards almost a decade ago (called the EBA). I’ve gone back and edited a handful of those. Others are loosely based on fictional teams I created as a kid back when I used to draw logos on paper or Paint. And the rest are completely new. A few will look like your traditional NBA-styled basketball logos, which tend to contain the team’s full name spelled out and a ball all within the boundaries of the logo, but others will look more like football, hockey, or college logos where the team name is separate. By not having the team name in the logo, I’ve found that it allows for a lot more freedom composition-wise. I also tried to avoid overdesigning so the logos remain clean and easy to read if reproduced on jerseys, courts, apparel, etc… I’m kind of busy these days, but I do have most of the 20 logos finished and I’ll post these as I finish up each team’s jerseys and courts, so hopefully I can keep at this. The first team is the New Orleans Marauders in Mardi Gras colors. For the jerseys, I focused on purple and yellow and kept green as an accent color since there are a few other teams with green too.
  20. Since the C is longer horizontally than vertically, the horizontally stretched star looks appropriate in that space and compliments the C just fine.
  21. The draft sketch is much better than the final product actually, because the dark gray in the draft gave the horse’s cheeks and nose area better definition. That detail seems to have been removed in the final version leaving it awkward in places.
  22. Is that old Clarkson logo another one of Phoenix Design Works that is being phased out? It has all the elements and style of their work from the early 2000’s, from the beveling to the go-to font.
  23. It may even be more than that since often times there are sport-specific word marks. With “small” schools, it’s better to have foresight and go overboard as a designer with different arrangements than to have a coach/marketing team go rogue later on and rearrange things themselves.
  24. I agree. I wish more schools would go this route of just modernizing their existing look if the previous one was poorly done, as it was here. The inconsistent line widths and awkward highlights of the old were in desperate need of an update. You don’t always need to redefine your identity, you just need someone with actual artistic skill to execute the design. The unique colors also really jump out.
  25. As a fan of college block letter logos, the cross swords CSU logo is a few tweaks away from looking outstanding. I hope they continue to use that. The new logo looks dated already as others have said, and you can’t read the school’s name because it’s so small. The article says they are proud to update yet stay “consistent” with their branding. Nothing is reminiscent of their prior brand. This reminds me of when UNO Privateers updated their logo only to realize it was a dated mistake and two years later finally getting it right by updating again, this time with Bosack.
