I think
I feel like with 8 divisions of 4, you'd have to play more division games to make the division championships legitimate.
One possibility:
division 6x=18 games
interconference=32 games
in conference=32 games (on a rotating basis, play two of the other three divisions 3x and one 2x)
This would mean every team in a division plays just about the same schedule (only difference is home/away for a few opponents.)
82 game season, division winners seeded 1-4
If they were worried about a prime matchup taking place in the 2nd round instead of 3rd, they could reseed a la the NHL.
I only mentioned Vancouver as a possibility because Stern has said it was a mistake leaving there so soon (it worked out for my city though).
With 8 divisions of four, it's hard to come up with something they'd go for.
This was the best I could do, but the Pistons, Celtics, and New York teams probably would not like it.
Pacific: SEA, VAN, POR, PHX
California: LAL, LAC, GSW, SAC
Southwest: HOU, DAL, SA, NO
Central: UTA, DEN, OKC, MIN
Midwest: IND, CHI, MIL, CLE
Northeast: DET, TOR, BOS, PHI
Atlantic: NYK, BRK, WAS, CHA
Southeast: MEM, ATL, MIA, ORL
Why would you put/name a division the Midwest in the Eastern conference then have a central division in the west? Doesn't seem right. Additionally, some of these alignments are wacky (NY in the same division as Charlotte but not Philadelphia????)
I think this would make much more sense:
EASTERN CONFERENCE
Atlantic
- Brooklyn Nets
- New York Knicks
- Philadelphia 76ers
- Washington Wizards
Northeast
- Boston Celtics
- Cleveland Cavaliers
- Detroit Pistons
- Toronto Raptors
Southeast
- Atlanta Hawks

Central

WESTERN CONFERENCE

With the talk of Big East basketball schools jumping ship, I was thinking about how smart it would have been for the ACC to grab Georgetown after Maryland left. Yes, G'town doesn't play FBS football but it secures the DC market again and adds to the overall brand of the ACC. Games against Syracuse, BC and Notre Dame would be great television.
If the ACC wanted to go to an 18 team league, they could add Villanova and St. John's. That would give the ACC a basketball monopoly of the East Coast and they could play their conference tournament at MSG.
Adding basketball schools when you are a football league is insanely stupid.
If Georgetown, Villanova, and St. John's wanted to join the ACC, these things would have to happen:
-Georgetown's football program (which is currently in the FCS) would have to upgrade their stadium to FBS standards; same with Villanova.
-St. John's would have to relaunch their football program, which they discontinued in 2002.
Neither of these things are happening.
Villanova was prepared to go FBS, but by the time they finally decided, the Big East took the offer off the table. I think that would be a mistake though. As for the stadium situation, they could share Franklin Field with Penn while deciding what to do about their own stadium (which IMO is not much, because that area can't support the traffic that a big-time program would bring in.)
Wasn't Villanova eyeing Phily Union's facility at some point?
Yup. If I remember correctly, Villanova once thought about playing at PPL Park, just in case the football program were to move up to the FBS level.

On option A, why would you even consider having Colorado in a division with Miami and other eastern cities, yet put Kansas City in a west division? As far as I can tell option A shouldn't even be an option.
On Option A: I put Kansas City in the AL West so they could renew their rivalry with the Oakland A's. Also, Colorado is in the NL South because the state of Colorado, geographically speaking, is in the SOUTHwestern United States.
By the way, I just added Option C, with Cincinnati in the NL South, Colorado in the NL North, and Kansas City in the AL South.
-
While we're at it, here's my newest MLB realignment idea.
Option A:
AMERICAN LEAGUE
East
- Baltimore
- Boston
- New York Yankees
- Toronto
North
- Chicago White Sox
- Cleveland
- Detroit
- Minnesota
South
- Charlotte
- Houston
- Tampa Bay
- Texas
West
- Kansas City
- Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
- Oakland
- Seattle
NATIONAL LEAGUE
East
- New York Mets
- Philadelphia
- Pittsburgh
- Washington
North
- Chicago Cubs
- Cincinnati
- Milwaukee
- St. Louis
South
- Atlanta
- Colorado
- Miami
- San Antonio
West
- Arizona
- Los Angeles Dodgers
- San Diego
- San Francisco
Option B:
AMERICAN LEAGUE
East
- Baltimore
- Boston
- New York Yankees
- Toronto
North
- Chicago White Sox
- Cleveland
- Detroit
- Minnesota
South
- Houston
- Kansas City
- Tampa Bay
- Texas
West
- Arizona/Colorado
- Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
- Oakland
- Seattle
NATIONAL LEAGUE
East
- New York Mets
- Philadelphia
- Pittsburgh
- Washington
North
- Chicago Cubs
- Cincinnati
- Milwaukee
- St. Louis
South
- Atlanta
- Charlotte
- Miami
- San Antonio
West
- Arizona/Colorado
- Los Angeles Dodgers
- San Diego
- San Francisco
Option C:
AMERICAN LEAGUE
East
- Baltimore
- Boston
- New York Yankees
- Toronto
North
- Chicago White Sox
- Cleveland
- Detroit
- Minnesota
South
- Houston
- Kansas City
- Tampa Bay
- Texas
West
- Las Vegas
- Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
- Oakland
- Seattle
NATIONAL LEAGUE
East
- New York Mets
- Philadelphia
- Pittsburgh
- Washington
North
- Chicago Cubs
- Colorado
- Milwaukee
- St. Louis
South
- Atlanta
- Cincinnati
- Miami
- San Antonio
West
- Arizona
- Los Angeles Dodgers
- San Diego
- San Francisco
Option A looks odd with Colorado in the NL South and K.C. in the AL West. Options B or C would most likely work.
- Baltimore
-
If (and when) Major League Baseball expands to 32 teams...
AMERICAN LEAGUE
East
- Baltimore Orioles
- Boston Red Sox
- New York Yankees
- Toronto Blue Jays
North
- Chicago White Sox
- Cleveland Indians
- Detroit Tigers
- Minnesota Twins
South
- Charlotte expansion franchise
- Houston Astros
- Tampa Bay Rays
- Texas Rangers
West
- Kansas City Royals
- Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
- Oakland Athletics
- Seattle Mariners
NATIONAL LEAGUE
East
- New York Mets
- Philadelphia Phillies
- Pittsburgh Pirates
- Washington Nationals
North
- Chicago Cubs
- Cincinnati Reds
- Milwaukee Brewers
- St. Louis Cardinals
South
- Atlanta Braves
- Colorado Rockies
- Miami Marlins
- San Antonio expansion franchise
West
- Arizona Diamondbacks
- Los Angeles Dodgers
- San Diego Padres
- San Francisco Giants
- Baltimore Orioles

My question is why would the Mountain West Conference play their Championship Game at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona? You do know that the stadium is in Arizona State Territory.
It would make more sense for Denver, Colorado and Sports Authority Field at Mile High to host the MWAC Championship Game.
-
Here's my idea for the NBA...essentially convert it to a two-tier league, with the regular league shrunk down to 28 and a 16-team lower-tier league. Basically, if a team in the premier tier has a lower winning percentage than the highest team in the lower league after four years, then the two teams would switch places til the following cycle. So a team like Charlotte or Sacramento would switch out with two of the teams in the lower bracket. This would prevent tanking as well as keep the quality of play at a high level.
So here's how the premier league would look:
EASTERN CONFERENCE
ATLANTIC
Washington Wizards
Miami Heat
New York Knicks
Brooklyn Nets
Boston Celtics
Orlando Magic
Philadelphia 76ers
CENTRAL
Milwaukee Bucks
Atlanta Hawks
Cleveland Cavaliers
Chicago Bulls
Detroit Pistons
Indiana Pacers
Toronto Raptors
WESTERN CONFERENCE
MIDWEST
Houston Rockets
Minnesota Timberwolves
New Orleans Captains (personal favorite for new name)
San Antonio Spurs
Dallas Mavericks
Memphis Grizzlies
Oklahoma City Thunder (switched from Pacific with Utah)
PACIFIC
Phoenix Suns
Los Angeles Clippers
Utah Jazz (switched from Midwest with OKC)
San Francisco Warriors
Los Angeles Lakers
Portland Trailblazers
Denver Nuggets
Now under this scenario, Charlotte and Sacramento have been relegated to the new Developmental League, which I'll dub the Pro League. This would be the breeding ground for other markets that haven't had an NBA team; basically they'd be fighting for the right to join the Premier League.
WESTERN CONFERENCE
Sacramento Kings
Seattle Supersonics
San Diego Missions
San Jose Digits
Albuquerque Coyotes
Kansas City Riders
Las Vegas Lights
Mexico City Eagles/Ciudad de México Águilas
EASTERN CONFERENCE
Baltimore Monuments
Jacksonville Snappers
Charlotte Bobcats
Cincinnati Gladiators
New Jersey Elites
Kentucky Colonels
Providence Jackets
Birmingham Rebels
So, with this setup, let's say that over the next four years Toronto and San Francisco bottom out in the Premier League and the New Jersey Elites and the revived Seattle Supersonics do the best in their respective conference in the Pro League. The teams would switch, putting New Jersey in Toronto's place and Seattle in San Francisco's place.
Fixed it.

The NHL is not expanding. Not now. Not ever. And if they do, it will be the death of the league.
I, for one, disagree.
I think a 32-team NHL would be a good idea if done right.
With that said...
EASTERN CONFERENCECanada East
Montreal Canadiens
Ottawa Senators
Quebec Nordiques (expansion)

Got me thinking with all the Houston to AL talk, thought Id take my stab at this. Lets just say there is expansion here in a couple years adding Portland and Memphis into the league.
Based my divisions on what he NFL has, with the same playoff format as well. Division winners and 2 wild card teams advance to the playoffs. So what does everyone think?
AL East
New York Yankees
Boston Red Sox
Baltimore Orioles
Clevland Indians
AL West
Los Angeles Angels
Oakland A's
Seattle Mariners
Portland
AL North
Toronto Blue Jays
Detroit Tigers
Chicago White Sox
Minnesota Twins
AL South
Tampa Rays
Texas Rangers
Kansas City Royals
Memphis
NL East
New York Mets
Philadelphia Phillies
Washington Nationals
Pittsburgh Pirates
NL West
Arizona Diamondbacks
San Francisco Giants
Los Angeles Dodgers
San Diego Padres
NL North
Chicago Cubs
Milwaukee Brewers
Colorado Rockies
Cincinnati Reds
NL South
Atlanta Braves
St Louis Cardinals
Houston Astros
Miami Marlins
Seperating the Cardinals and Cubs is kind of a no-no. And Memphis a little further down on the expansion list.
Oh I know, with the Cards being smack dab in the middle of the country, they were honestly the last team I placed into a division. It was all just for kicks anyway.
It was either Memphis or Carolina for expansion, like I said, all in fun
I'd put the Reds in the NL South and have Charlotte and Portland as expansion teams.

My 32 team MLB proposal would go like this:
AMERICAN LEAGUE

Baltimore Orioles
Boston Red Sox
New York Yankees
Toronto Blue Jays
North
Chicago White Sox
Cleveland Indians
Detroit Tigers
Minnesota Twins
South
Charlotte expansion team
Kansas City Royals
Tampa Bay Rays
Texas Rangers
West
Los Angeles Angels
Oakland A's
Portland Beavers (expansion team -- about time the Rose City gets a Major League ballclub)
Seattle Mariners
NATIONAL LEAGUE

New York Mets
Philadelphia Phillies
Pittsburgh Pirates

Chicago Cubs
Colorado Rockies
Milwaukee Brewers
St. Louis Cardinals
South
Atlanta Braves
Cincinnati Reds
Houston Astros
Miami Marlins
West
Arizona Diamondbacks
Los Angeles Dodgers

I also propose expanding the postseason to 12 teams (6 teams -- 4 division champions and 2 wild cards -- in each league).

If the Thrashers DO INDEED move to Winnipeg and get rebranded as the Winnipeg "insert-new-team-nickname here" (most likely the Falcons in honor of the amateur hockey team that won gold in the 1920 Winter Olympics), it will most likely be the Nashville Predators that'll move to the Eastern Conference and fill the spot of the Thrashers in the Southeast Division. That could mean the AHL team currently occupying Winnipeg (the Manitoba Moose) could move to St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.
So with that said...
EASTERN CONFERENCE
Atlantic
New Jersey Devils
New York Islanders (if they last long in Long Island)
New York Rangers
Philadelphia Flyers
Pittsburgh Penguins
Northeast
Boston Bruins
Buffalo Sabres
Montreal Canadiens
Ottawa Senators
Toronto Maple Leafs
Southeast
Carolina Hurricanes
Florida Panthers
Nashville Predators (moved from Western Conference Central Division)
Tampa Bay Lightning
Washington Capitals
WESTERN CONFERENCE

Vancouver Canucks
Winnipeg Falcons (moved from Eastern Conference Southeast Division due to move from Atlanta)
Pacific
Anaheim Ducks
Colorado Avalanche (moved from Northwest Division)
Los Angeles Kings
Phoenix Coyotes
San Jose Sharks

Cincinnati Reds in the American League with Cleveland Indians (their in-state rival) and the Boston Red Sox? An absolute "no-no".
-
Time for a little MLB re-alignment in honor of the start of the season:
- 2 expansion teams added (Nashville in the NL, New Orleans in the AL)
- Arizona moves to AL
- AL and NL both have 4 divisions of 4 teams each
AL East
Baltimore
Boston
NY Yankees
Toronto
AL North
Cleveland
Chicago White Sox
Detroit
Minnesota
AL South
Kansas City
New Orleans
Tampa Bay

Nice... except I would keep Arizona in the NL West, move Colorado to the NL North, and Cincinnati to the NL South, while expanding to Charlotte (AL South) and Portland (AL West).
It's pretty similar to my main plan I usually do, except there's no way Ndw Orleans or Nashville get a team. NOLA is in danger of losing their basket all team as it is and Nashville won't build a stadium for their triple-a team or any other level. I usually do Portland and either San Antonio or Cbarlotte, but usually move Colorado to the AL something with KC, Texas and usually the San Antonio franchise. You gotta keep the Cards, Cubs, Reds and Brewers together.
Oddly, I put the Reds in the NL South since the city of Cincinnati, Ohio, although technically a "Midwestern" U.S. city, is part of the "Upland South" subregion, which is in contrast to the "Deep South" subregion. Just my opinion anyway.
