  1. I'm at a loss for words. The guy is up to $120 million short on a $140 million investment? :censored:. Can I buy the team on credit? I am just $20 million short of Jamison. How is he even in the picture having only 14% of the purchase price? Oh, right. NHL.

I said weeks ago this guy wasn't rich enough. Turns out even I underestimated just how underfunded he was. Jamison really must've been the last guy they could find who was remotely interested, so they trot him out before the Glendale leadership, give them some false promises, and then drop the bombshell that he's really got nothing just days later.

  2. Temporary restraining order DENIED.

Rationale: Court lacks authority to stop the vote from taking place. That said, it acknowledges Glendale has kind of been doing a crappy job of providing documents within the required time window for such things, so I don't know, grounds for a restraining order on enacting the lease deal I guess.

Court basically told the GWI they need to wait until after the vote to sue. Which they will hopefully do.

  3. As someone who hasn't followed this story that closely, why hasn't Goldwater Institute taken this to court yet? It's been a farce for a long time and illegal things have probably already happened. So what are they waiting for?

I think literally the only thing stopping them is that the deal isn't officially officially in place yet. So nothing illegal has been done yet to sue over.

If Glendale was smart (hold your laughter), they would just bring Goldwater to the bargaining table with the new owner and try to avoid an expensive lawsuit that they will lose. But then the politicians wouldn't be able to say that they "got a deal done for the Coyotes" even if the deal was illegal all along.

That's not stopping them. They're going to court this morning in about 20 minutes when it opens to filed a restraining order against today's vote even happening. They're angling for a violation of the AZ constitution's gifts clause again.

  4. I forgot the cluster:censored: there would be if Winnipeg is in the Southeast and Quebec would be in the Pacific next year if Phoenix moved.

Well they could trade QUE & WPG...

And GWI should 100% definitely be all over this. This whole thing is just sad at this point.

Good news is, it does appear they're going to be all over this. And on top of it you have a mayor and several councilmen who wouldn't have to worry about this if it does get derailed again since they'd be out of office. Seems to me everything and then some that killed the Hulsizer deal last year is here to do the same for the Jamison deal. I mean hell, Jamison doesn't even have his portion of the funding yet.

  5. Lost in all the news about the awful deal Glendale is trying to push for the future is this gem about the bad deal they have now:

$25 million NHL payment will come from Glendale utility fund

Glendale's second $25 million pledge to the National Hockey League largely came from city water and sewer funds, which is not what city administrators said would happen.

Actually, city staff said the money wouldn't be needed at all because they expected the Phoenix Coyotes to be sold. If that had occurred, the pledge to help the NHL cover team losses during the 2011-12 season would have been moot.

That didn't happen and the biggest chunk of the pledge, $15 million, was siphoned from the utility fund into an escrow account awaiting the NHL's bill, which is expected any day.

It's the second year in a row that the city made good on its NHL pledge with help from the utility accounts, which is largely funded by fees, such as water and sanitation, paid by residents and businesses. The enterprise funds are suppose to pay for long-term utility projects, such as sewer plants or pipe replacement.

    It gets better:

Councilman Manny Martinez said council was told early this year that the utility funds were used again.

"I wished it didn't happen that way but the options were limited," Martinez said.

That said, Martinez said he is not concerned that the money came out of the enterprise fund because it must be repaid. Glendale begins reimbursing the first $25 million payment next budget year at $1.1 million for 25 years.

So not only are they committing to spend money they don't have in the future, they're already on the hook for repaying in the future money they don't have to cover bills they can't pay today.

This is beyond farce. Time to move the team.

It's mind boggling as to why they're hanging on to the team. They're hemorrhaging money they don't have and would lose far less if they let the team go and just imploded their mistake of an arena.

  6. Bettman before Game 1 at Prudential Center: (Per TSN):

Greg Jamieson continues his efforts to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes, both on putting his equity package together and working with the city of Glendale on a building management deal. A city vote next week on the management agreement may pave the way for the equity side of the equation, Bettman said. Asked if the Coyotes would definitely be in Phoenix next season, the commissioner said: "I can't say anything with 100 per cent certainty. So I think that the likelihood is, based on everything we know today, that the process should conclude successfully but it's not something that I'm in a position to guarantee." He did acknowledge there is no Plan B, however, saying the hope was that the Jamieson takeover would work.

Goldwater please sue, Goldwater please sue, Goldwater please sue!

  7. It has been reported on Yahoo! Sports NHL section that the Glendale City Council has approved a preliminary budget that includes $17 million to be paid to the prospective buyer of the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes for operating costs for the city's Jobing.com Arena.

    Surprise, surprise!

It appears from what I'm understanding that it boils down to playing with monopoly money, since they technically didn't have $17 million, so they lay off dozens of civil workers in order to raise the money.

As for Greg Jamison being a "potential" owner, I'm not saying he's not a fit owner. I'm saying is that he doesn't know what he's getting himself into. If he buys the team, will they stay in Phoenix? Rightly so. For a year at most. One owner can save a team from financial ruins and bring them to financial success. Not the case here, especially in Glendale's situation and the team's fiscal woes, not to mention our heroes from the Goldwater Institute breathing down his neck. Guaranteed he'll lose money in his first year, if the sale goes through. Other than that, I'd say he has his work cut out for him.

But have they agreed to pay him the upfront cash to buy the team. I believe it was what $40 million that Jamison was looking for to buy them?

Also shocked they've approved the 17 million, it's beyond stupid. I can't wait for the upcoming GWI lawsuit.

  8. Hypothetical question:

If the A's move to San Jose, where would the San Jose Giants move to keep the current California League divisional dynamics?

    Oakland!:P Couldn't resist

A couple of cities come to mind: Santa Rosa or Salinas

It's not THAT far fetched. Still there's actually no reason the San Jose Giants have to move anywhere. Wolff has said he won't force them out and unless he does they're not obligated to move.

  9. If the Warriors are leaving, could they do this?

    1. When the Warriors move out, tear down Oracle and build a new baseball park in its place.

    2. Then tear down the circular part of the Coliseum and rebuild the other half like a football stadium for the Raiders. Raiders could play at Candlestick or Santa Clara for a year or two.

Then they'd have a Coliseum sports complex like the one in Kansas City, for the price of 1 1/2 stadia.

Edit: I usually am really careful with spelling!

Problem is money. Who would pay for it? Oakland has less than nothing to contribute and the A's ownership and MLB have shown no interest in privately building on the current Coliseum Complex site. They want to be in a downtown, namely San Jose's.

    ^^ no interest??

Yes, no interest. Wolff has publicly stated repeatedly that his goal is to build a ballpark in the A's current Bay Area market. Not out of state or out of region. If San Jose is denied that may change, but for now with the status quo the A's aren't going anywhere outside the Bay Area.

  10. Post any news whenever it comes about the Oakland Athletics possible relocation. Bump this thread if new news arrives later on.

There is no news about the A's possible relocation because no one is actually talking about the A's relocating. Selig made an off the cuff comment that the press then ran in a thousand different directions with and sensationalized the hell out of. End of story. The A's aren't moving anywhere outside their current Bay Area home, have no interest in doing so, and MLB has not approved any such move. End of story.

  11. With te amount of money glendale has paid, plus the amount they are going to pay, they must be pretty close to being able to buy the team themselves...

Begs the question, why don't they. They'd have to spend 92 million under this plan, plus the 25 they've already spent. They're already well on their way to full ownership of the team at 170 mil. Which is why this plan is so asinine. Jamison isn't buying the team, Glendale is and then gifting it to him.

  12. Apparently a tentative agreement has been reached. Can't remember the guy's name. There's no mention of it anywhere on NHL.com or the Coyotes website

Jamison. And it's not really a tentative deal. It requires the city to provide Jamison with over 92 million dollars in "management fees." It's essentially the same deal that Hulsizer tried to buy the team under last year. The same plan that the Goldwater Institute and taxpayers rightly threatened to tie up in court for years. They would presumably do the same again this time. So this "deal" is already DOA. It's just another excuse to keep selling readily available playoff tickets to a region that couldn't care less...

  13. http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Ftvasports.ca%2Ftvasports%2Fhockey%2Farchives%2F2012%2F04%2F20120424-163050.html&act=url

No agreement has been reached between the City of Glendale and the group led by Greg Jamison, but never mind, the Goldwater Institute is ready to defend citizens.

Councillor Joyce Clark said Monday she said that there is four of seven board members in favor of an agreement with Jamison, if he is willing to accept a $ 17 million for managing the arena.

To pay this amount to the group of Jamison, the City should increase sales taxes by 0.7%, which would make the city of Glendale most taxed in the United States.

Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs, said Monday it has abandoned the idea of keeping the Coyotes, as councilors Norma Alvarez and Phil Lieberman. It is therefore conceivable that Clark, Yvonne Knaack, Manny Martinez and Steven Frate are four members in favor.

Dear God let this be true.

Hopefully not. This travesty has gone on long enough. That and I can't see any politician that's not ready to commit career suicide raising any tax rate to the highest in the nation to line the pockets of a rich guy. Unless 4 members of the Glendale city council don't like their jobs there's no way they raise taxes to keep the team.

  14. http://www.azfamily.com/news/Coyotes-win-as-Glendale-Council-pledges-more-money-148626725.html

Monday, during an eight-hour budget session, the Glendale City Council voted to budget another payout for next season.

During the same meeting, the Council also voted to raise property taxes and the sales tax. Council members said the Coyotes fund is not directly related to the tax hike, but another city official called it a "contributing factor."

Hmm, complete 180, the saga continues

How the hell can they justify that? Property and sales tax hikes while they're pissing money away to a hockey team that shouldn't be there? Wonder how long the current council will be in place until they're voted out.

  15. http://www.bizjournals.com/phoenix/news/2012/04/21/greg-jamison-says-hes-getting-closer.html?page=all

He said getting a final deal still could take one or two months. Jamison declined to go into too many details about his bid or where his money is coming from and how much more he needs.

"We?re not at 100 percent yet," said Jamison, referring to the financing intricacies.

 Didn't these jokers get enough time yet? I guess not.

Can't believe the COG is going to pay them anything. But it looks like the floor is 11 million which is what the mayor is offering. The team still wants 20+.

  16. And Pacific makes 10 for the West Coast Conference!

This is why I'm glad Gonzaga, even with all their offers to join the WAC and the Mountain West, stayed in the WCC...because of their dynasty, not only have other schools in there stepped their game up during their time (St. Mary's, San Diego, Pepperdine, etc.), but it's also become an attractive conference for other schools to join (BYU and now Pacific).

    *BYU joins Big 12*

    We'll see.

  17. Why the hell are the seats on one end all blocked off?

Probably because you'd only be able to see the opposite end of the ice due to the location of the rink and the pitch of the stands.

There's "limited" view, and then there's "really f'ing limited" view. Those would likely fall into the latter category.

    True.

But still, that is the :censored:tiest setup I've ever seen for hockey. Now I really hope the Isles don't move there.

There's no way they move there with that limited a view from 1/5th of the usable arena. Looks like it's Nassau or bust for the time being in the NY area.

  18. Regardless of why they built the arena to start or why they bothered to plop down $25 mil last year, it sure does look like even the delusional mayor is tired of it. I think the NHL is going to find the well has run dry this year if they try for another $25 mil. And with no subsidy, they've no reason left to keep the team in Phoenix beyond Gary's ego (and even his ego must have limits... right?)
