I find it amusing that noted Arena Management and Sports Financial Genius™ Greg Jamison supposedly can't finance this without resorting to middle eastern oil tycoons and loans from the entity he's buying the team from.

I mean if this guy's the money making genius he's purported to be then finding investors shouldn't be an issue, right?

I'm not sure, but I THINK they have to honour the deadline. That being said they probably won't extend the deadline like the last council constantly did.

They could pull out but it might lead to a lengthy legal battle if they do. However if Jamison doesn't get his deal done in the next two weeks the new council is under no obligation to extend the deal and in fact were elected claiming they didn't want this deal and opposed it. So hopefully Jamison doesn't get this done by Jan 31.

If it gets all the way down to January 31st, and the new city council actually does tell him to put up or shut up, the league is going to "loan" him the money to buy the team. Continue the omnishambles!

That's if they tell him anything. If I'm not mistaken the deal simply lapses on Jan 31 unless extended by the new council. Who presumably wouldn't do so since they don't want this deal. So they don't have to say anything. If Jamison doesn't close by Jan 31 it's over.

The Big12 is meeting later this month. The Commissioner said the Big12 may become more proactive. They are looking at adding 6 more teams. It is coming, people. Don't think for a second it isn't. It has been coming for years. The payoff is almost here.

It might happen, but the Big XII scooping up Northern Illinois and Tulsa ain't exactly what I'd call a payoff.

Now, if they managed to swing the Florida State-Clemson deal, the avalanche will probably start.

Well no . Of course they are going after Florida State and Clemson. I would expect Cincinatti, Louiville, Clemson, and Florida State. As for the other 2 teams, its intriguing to me. I would assume they would like Georgia Tech and North Carolina. But if this motivates the B16 TEN to speed up their invitations (which it will), I would expect Georgia Tech and North Carolina to go to the B16 TEN, leaving Virginia and Virginia Tech to get an invite from the Big XII. Just think if that would happen... talk about a big F-U to the SEC. Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, and Virginia Tech all being swept from under their nose.

Unless the new city council, which takes over mid-January after being elected on a "Jesus CHRIST, these effing people" platform, decides to come charging out of the gate and tells Greg and all his imaginary friends to go pound sand.

We definitely think it's the drop deadline. The new council has categorically stated they won't be renewing this "deal" (if you want to call what Glendale is getting a deal) if Jamison hasn't finished his sale by the 31st. He and the NHL will be SOL with the new council. Or at least they should be as all the new members were elected on a " the NHL" platform.

And you still don't have investors? I'm not sure that record of spectacular failure is something you want to admit publicly.

Might be why he flat out turned down the Glendale city council's request to list his investors. Can't list what you don't have. I was shocked they went forward with the deal when he told them that. How do you go into potentially city crippling business with a guy who is less transparent than a brick wall.

They won't have to. They only have to wait 27 months if they leave as a group. If they simply vote to disband the Big East in the coming weeks they can leave immediately as there will no longer be a Big East. And one thing that has been clear since this first broke, the 7 schools have the 3/4 voting power to kill the conference until June.

I can't see Gonzaga & St. Mary's making those cross country treks in basketball and vice versa with the other schools coming west. Traveling in basketball is a totally different animal than football.

Agreed. Not a chance. The 7 schools are good, but they're not a huge upgrade over what the WCC schools like St. Mary's and Gonzaga enjoy now. And they add way too much travel. As it is the WCC schools weren't thrilled with having to travel to Utah when BYU joined.

According to USA Today it's official. The 7 basketball schools are pulling out. They just have to decide if they're going to cripple the Big East or just end it. The former supposedly leaves cash on the table but is easier to do. The latter is more lucrative but harder to set up. Either way, they're gone. Hopefully this finally puts and end to what's left of this once proud conference and allows the poor saps who got sucked in to joining a way to gracefully exit.

Actually the latter should be more financially damaging because you lose the autobid and Louisville, Syracuse, Pitt, and Rutgers are so going to either sue for their exit fees back or argue that they shouldn't pay them.

Not sure that's really an issue. Could you really see the champion of this conference not getting an at-large bid?

The ESPN article also mentioned that they're looking to start a national catholic conference with Butler, Dayton, Creighton, Gonzaga, Saint Louis, Xavier and possibly St. Mary's, but even with the former Big East 7, I don't see a scenario where they don't get at least one at-large invite.

Yeah it's looking like the remaining "Big East" teams would be granted a waiver and autobid if the 7 schools disbanded the Big East and took its current autobid with them. But that assumes the incoming basketball schools would still join the league with 7 of their peers now gone. Frankly I think this is it. This should be the final nail in the coffin of the Big East. I mean there really is no benefit for any of the incoming schools to continue with the process at this point as they don't stand to make any money in what's left of the Big East. And in many cases like BSU and SDSU they'll be leaving potentially up to a million or more dollars annually on the table by leaving their current conferences.

Possibly 14 if BYU comes back as has been rumored. And on top of it the MWC reportedly is paying its schools between 2 and 3 million a year right now. The "new" Big East minus the 7 basketball schools would only be paying 1.29-1.8 million a year. Add in the loss of thee BIg East's automatic BCS berth under the new playoff system (where the MWC and Big East now have equal access to the playoff system) and there is no benefit for either BSU or SDSU moving over anymore.

Forget it. There's no way it got this far without assurance that it would go their way. I don't know if Jamison will buy the team next Thursday or whatever, because I still don't think he really has the money, but they'll vote yes on this like they always do. And I don't know if the new council can undo this just because they don't like it. It's a crappy situation.

Why wouldn't they keep going even without assurance? Not like this has cost anything for Jamison (hell he may or may not even have his whole ownership group together yet). And while the council had been supportive in the past, things have changed. The deal is no longer endorsed by the guy who created it, the voters elected a new slate of councilors all who oppose the deal, and on top of that the NHL has proven a league full of fan hating crybabies since the process began in Phoenix.

As for the new council, I'm sure there are ways they can get out of the contract. Not the least of which is bankruptcy, which isn't out of the question with how bad this deal will drain the city.

Not so sure. The swing vote has been wavering, and that was before the city manager came out against his own plan. This whole thing really hinges on one woman and what she decides...

And that assumes of course that the new council doesn't back track in a month's time since technically this vote is being taken by a lame duck council.

Looks like the vote is either going to be 4-2 like it was last time, or 3-3 which would kill the project (as a tie is not approval). With the architect of the newest deal having turned against it (the city manager), approval is in no way guaranteed. And if approval doesn't happen, the next council will not continue this travesty sealing the fate of both the Jamison deal and likely the Coyotes... FINALLY!

So while I rarely support teams moving, for once here's hoping we get that 3-3 vote and put this ill advised foray of an ice sport into the desert to bed once and for all.

Again, which ones. We've been talking about no less than 5 different current and future members. You have to be more specific because some schools are only football members and some are full members.

ESPN is now reporting that San Diego State, Boise State and BYU are all in talks about rejoining the Mountain West. Which would deny the Big East two of their three lifeline schools. And on top of that it's a move that makes far more sense for all 3 schools than joining the Big East and staying indy respectively.

So the Big East is about... 3 days away from being dead? That means Cincinatti, Louisville, USF, UCF, SMU, and Houston are the only football worthy schools left in the Big East... and they are middle to bottome of the pack. I wouldn't be surprised to see Lousiville and Cincinatti get invites to the Big XII, in hopes to somehow form a halfway decent presence with West Virginia.

Wouldn't be shocked to see Houston get an invite to the MWC if BSU, SDSU and BYU all rejoin. That would give the MWC 13 and they'd need one more. Houston would be a good fit. And on top of that Houston (or anyone else) leaving the Big East would give both SDSU and BSU an out as it triggers their free withdrawl clauses from the Big East.

Glendale voted to keep the tax increase on themselves to fund the Coyotes. You just can't get rid of them, huh.

Well to fund the city. Whether it funds the Coyotes remains to be seen. Particularly since the mayor is on her way out and the new one doesn't support the Yotes half as much as she did.

Looks like her last major act as mayor might actually be to save the city from her own stupid idea. And finally cut the Coyotes loose.
