Look at the attendance numbers, they don't really support that narrative. They were trending downward, before the Devils change, and the lowest attendance average (before this season) was as the River Rats.

The Devils did diddly poo with the team, barely did any tv advertising, and the marketing was bare bones.  It was like they really didn't want to be in the Capital District.

Katie Nolan is likely to leave FS1 the second she's able to. I wonder why, in the meantime, they don't advertise her program during the NFL games? People know what they're getting with the Bayless and Cowherd takes shows. Nolan at least offers something different. Plus you may entice her not to accept the likely ESPN offer. She's a real talent in an industry generally bereft of it.

The pronoun "She" is the reason why her program's NOT advertised during Monopoly's games.  Fox is skerred of upsetting their base.

I'd like to see the Devils have a minor league team in Jersey again.  Atlantic City might be a good spot.  In the wake of casino closures and other financial difficulties, the city has made several efforts to become a "year-round" family destination.  I imagine a minor league hockey team would bring at least some additional traffic into the city during the otherwise quiet winter months.  Furthermore, with a minor league team in Atlantic City, the Devils could strengthen their influence in South Jersey and build on the "Jersey's Team" marketing theme.

The Albany Devils and Phantoms have had a few meetings at AC's Boardwalk Hall.  Maybe this was an attempt to test the market?  I recognize that this scenario is very unlikely -- it is wishful thinking on my part.

The occasional Devils' game in AC is all that's going to happen.  The league office and many of the franchise owners, and that does include NHL teams, prefer to have Albany in the league than AC

This is the problem in my understanding. I'm not sure how much of an NHL following there is in Albany, but many SUNY students from Westchester, NYC, & LI are Rangers fans. Of course college students aren't buying season tickets, but if they actually make an effort to appeal to that demographic their attendance could shoot up remarkably.

When the Capital District Islanders played out of the Houston Fieldhouse on RPI's campus, the student tickets were dirt freaking cheap, even for rival Union College students.  The River Rats always tried to appeal to UatAlbany, Siena, and other colleges' students.  Once the Devils took over, they seem to forget about them.

Conversely, Albany has one of the biggest arenas among the small-northeast-market teams, something like 12,000, and their attendance is terrible. I suspect apathy toward the Devils and the Devils running a bare-bones operation that doesn't get people in the door. Maybe that's where the Rangers' affiliate belongs, not Hartford or Binghamton. You've gotta imagine most people in Albany are Rangers fans.

The city of Albany has 100,000 people, give or take.  The market, however, is close to 1 million: It goes north past Glens Falls, south to Catskill, west to past Amsterdam, and east to the MA, VT, and CT borders.

The Times Union Center holds over 13,000 for hockey, but with upper deck curtains is reduced to around 8,000.

The Capital District is strange when it comes to major league sports fandom.  By vehicle, it's within 3 hours of Boston and NYC, another hour you can hit Buffalo and Montreal.  With that said, there are probably an equal amount of Rangers, Islanders, and Bruins fans here, with the Sabres next, the Devils trailing the Canadiens.  The major sticking point of the low attendance has been the location of the arena.  Downtown Albany was NOT the most ideal place, 10 miles east across the Hudson would have been better, even 12 miles west in Schenectady as well.

The parent Devils don't maintain a good presence at the arena, send terrible front office personnel up.  Also, discontinuing the River Rats identity didn't help.

Well, any decision which Big XII presidents/chancellors were going to take next week may take a turn for the worse by the end of business today as reports have Baylor President Ken Starr being fired (or possibly reassigned).

Starr was one of three presidents on the Big XII's "Composition Committee" along with WVU's Gordon Gee and OU's David Boren.  Plus, if fired, there would be three interim Presidents/Chancellors at Big XII schools for next Friday (Baylor, K-State, and Texas Tech)

EDIT: Looks like Starr has another week and a half, as Baylor wants to make an announcement by next Friday.

Baylor is a hypocritical college.  They make it difficult for their agnostic and atheist students - a nephew received his Bachelors and Masters in Science from the school but was constantly being harassed by students and officials for his refusal to attend "Christian" and Bible study courses - yet they allow the sexual assaults on women.

  7. Wife's company is a corporate sponsor for the AHL Albany Devils AND the ECHL Adirondack Thunder. She's entered us into the free ticket raffles for ALL the games. :D

It's great to live in NY's Capital District, have the Devils and Thunder, plus DI's Union College and RPI, all within an "hour's" drive.

  8. Well at least I'm relatively certain the new Vegas club won't institute zip code blackouts on ticket purchases for visiting fans.

They probably won't have many home games from late November to December too. NFR (rodeo) will boot them out around Thanksgiving for two weeks, their will be a NCAA holiday tournament to be booked and to end the year UFC come in on the last Saturday night.

Booted out for two months for rodeos and college basketball? This sounds like a terrific place to have a Big Four franchise! Perhaps the NHL will be freethinking enough to also put a team in a city with no arena.

I don't see the National Final Rodeo leaving the Thomas and Mack Center, since it brings in a chunk of money to UNLV.

  9. The absolute worst is when you hear GMs and execs say things like "Oh, we don't like the shootout, but the fans love it and find it exciting!". How patronizing. Hockey fans can appreciate a well-played hockey game and don't need to be stimulated with the contrived sense of excitement the shootout brings. Idiots.

Exactly. They haven't a clue as to what fans like and want. Of course, the shootout can be exciting, but if a game ends in a tie, no one's going to cry because there wasn't a true winner.

  10. When I said US/Canada, I meant both the United States and Canada. While I'd prefer for it to be US only, it wouldn't surprise me if they did a duel world-cup setting.

I guess it's more likely that they just remain in the US though.

A group could be held in Montreal and Toronto.
