The Leafs' new centennial exhibit at the HHoF may shed some light on the new banner designs. If those are indeed the new designs, they'll be far inferior to the current ones. At the very least, including the players' years of service and adding era-specific logos are nice touches.

Those banners are a nod to the old player banners that used to hang in Maple Leaf Gardens.

Here are some of the old ones on display in, I believe, Ryerson Univeristy's rink that now occupies the former MLG.

  2. Anyone know the font that the Toronto Blue Jays use in their logo?

    bluejays_lettering_01.gif

The online font finders don't seem to be of help, but I have a suspicion its a custom font. If it's a real one though, I'd like to know.

    Thanks in advance.

  3. Okay, so it looks like only Las Vegas and Quebec City have put in formal bids for an NHL expansion team and it seems doubtful anyone else will be throwing a bid in now. So let's pretend they both get approved, and in the meantime, nobody else moves. Not Arizona, not Florida, not any team.

My proposal for a 32 team NHL:

    WESTERN CONFERENCE

Western Canada Division: Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Winnipeg

Pacific Division: Anaheim, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Jose

Southwest Division: Arizona, Colorado, Dallas, St. Louis

Central Division: Chicago, Detroit, Minnesota, Nashville

    EASTERN CONFERENCE

Eastern Canada Division: Montreal, Quebec, Ottawa, Toronto

Northeast Division: Boston, Buffalo, Columbus, Pittsburgh

Atlantic Division: New Jersey, NY Islanders, NY Rangers, Philadelphia

Southeast Division: Carolina, Florida, Tampa Bay, Washington

    Scheduling formula:

2 games (1 home, 1 away) versus the 16 teams in opposite conference = 32 games

3 games (1 home, 1 away, 1 alternating home or away that changes each season) versus the 12 teams in other divisions of same conference = 36 games

4 games (2 home, 2 away) versus other three teams in division = 12 games

1 extra home game and 1 extra road game against a division opponent, rotating each season = 2

    32 + 36 + 12 + 2 = 82 games.

Bonus Hockey Day in Canada schedule:

    1 PM EST = MTL v QUE

    4 PM EST = OTT v TOR

    7 PM EST = CGY v EDM

    10 PM EST = VAN v WPG

  4. This may not be the first time a counterfeit Mighty Ducks Wild Wing jersey has been shared, but this is noteworthy: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Anaheim-Ducks-Teemu-Selanne-Wild-Wing-Jersey-New-w-Tags-Fight-Strap-STITCHED-/161501653711?pt=U_Hockey_Fan_Shop&hash=item259a3faacf

    $_57.JPG

If you notice, the manufacturer actually took the time to make Wild Wing, the chunks of ice, the water, all of it, as crests! Anyone who's ever seen a real thing knows the whole thing was sublimated directly onto the fabric. The only crests are the logos on the shoulders, that's it.

    Made me laugh.

  5. The Habs have retired 15 numbers for 18 players. Not one of those banners is superfluous. Look up any of the stats of any of those players during their time with the Canadiens and you will see that all of them belong up there.

True, the Habs won 14 of their 24 Stanley Cups during a time where there was rarely more than 10 teams. The remaining 10 Stanley Cups were won post-expansion, still more than any other team.

A lot of credit to the success of the Canadiens during their history is attributed to their scouting and farm system. Back in the olden days, junior teams were specifically sponsored by NHL teams. So if you wound up playing in that system, that NHL team had your rights. Most of the Canadiens talent were brought up through that system (and yes, about 99% of that talent was Canadian, but only because 99% of ALL NHL talent was Canadian. Montreal did not have the rights to all Canadian talent. There were of course players like Gordie Howe, the Patrick brothers, Bobby Hull, Stan Makita, Ted Lindsay, Bobby Orr, none of whom ever played for the Canadiens. During the same timeframe the Canadiens won their first 14 Stanley Cups, the Toronto Maple Leafs franchise managed to win 13 as well. (What happened after expansion seemingly but both franchises in opposite directions.)

Also, regarding that rule that the Canadiens were allowed to draft any French-Canadien players before the rest of league was allowed to draft anyone...there is a little bit of truth to it, but, remarkably, almost none of those players that they acquired through those means had any impact whatsoever with the franchise. (Better explained here: http://www.habseyesontheprize.com/2008/12/2/678036/debunking-the-canadiens-fr )

Credit is due however to how they got Guy Lafleur. In 1970, the Habs acquired Oakland's first-round pick in 1971 in exchange for their first-rounder in 1970. In the 1970-71 season, the Seals were near the bottom of the standings, but not actually in last place. Habs traded one of their veterans to the Kings (who were at the bottom) to help improve the Kings enough to pass the Seals in the standings and the Seals finish dead last, giving Montreal that pick.

But, with all this in mind, there is no question about the success and deservedness of the banners in Montreal.

  6. I just thought of an unusual idea for MLB re-alignment that could also help make the playoffs more straightforward...and it also adds a twist.

Each league only has two divisions, East and West. One division will have 8 teams, the other will have 7 teams. However, the opposite divisions in each league will have 8 teams. (i.e. AL East and NL West will have 8 teams, while AL West and NL East have 7 teams).

Playoffs could just be straight up two Division winners face off in the LCS or do 1 vs 2 in each division for an LDS, then LCS. (You could have be the highest of the #2's faces the lowest of the #1s, but whatever).

Now, with a twist...whoever finishes 7th and 8th in the division of 8 and 7th in the division of 7 SWAP LEAGUES the next season and remains there until they finish last again. It also alters the balance each season so one year one East division and one West division will always have 8 teams.

It could wreak havoc on existing rivalries if one of the teams finishes last and is sent to the other league, but it could also spawn new rivalries.

    What do you think?

  7. For their 20th season home opener, the Halifax Mooseheads are given all season-ticket and 15-game pack holders a free replica Memorial Cup Champions ring.

    FanRing0023.jpg
Of course this image is the just the replica for the fans. As much as I hate the team and it's name (which is ironic as I got to work at the Metro Centre during every home game this past season and got to watch the Presidents Trophy winning moment free) I never hated the logo. And if they can pull off the intricate detail of the moosehead on a ring, it could be very very impressive.

  8. I just have to post a link to this blog because it's so stupid. I almost laughed over it until I realized how many people believe everything they read is the gospel truth.

    Just a sample:

"Getting back to the Phoenix situation, the NHL could take a serious look at killing the franchise as a way to send a message to the NHLPA. Keep in mind there is no CBA, and the league absolutely can end franchises without input from the players. What would this actually mean?

    1. A dispersal draft would take place. The 29 other teams in the NHL would have a draft to divide up 29 assets from the Coyotes organization. The draft order would likely be in reverse order of how teams finished last season. Worded another way, Columbus would draft Oliver Ekman Larsson 1st overall, and the Oilers would get to pick between defenseman Keith Yandle, Center Martin Hanzus, or star defensive prospect Brandon Gormley. I'm a gambler, so I'd likely look at Gormley. He'd also fit with the timeline existing in Edmonton.

    2. Teams could be allowed to "exchange" a contract during this process. Remember all my talk about an "Amnesty" clause in the new CBA? Try this on for size: Every team can have only so many contracts, right? So say hello to Keith Yandle on the Oilers, and goodbye to Shawn Horcoff. I'm serious, friends. Every team could use this situation as a way to dump off one ugly, ugly contract. How happy would Montreal be to trade Scott Gomez for Gormley?

I don't see how any rules are being broken here. Keep in mind there's no CBA, teams can deal contracts, and the PA cannot block the folding of a team. How much would it scare the hell out of the NHLPA if 29 teams could dump off 29 oversized contracts, and the team would fold, killing those contracts, just for laughs?"

Umm, pretty sure that's the most painfully obvious case of collusion any court has ever seen...

If that happened, where would their 2012 Pacific Division Champions banner hang?

  9. The NOB font is hilarious.

Seriously. A comparison for those who don't know:

    DSC_0305.jpg

    bruins584.jpg

    It's not even close.

I'm fairly certain they got the NOB font from the NHL Shop customization preview window, which is not quite that accurate as I think that may be that the shop is just simply using a single layer with automatic outlines that overlap the layer. See for yourself! For whatever reason, they must have just assumed that the white letters and numbers are also triple-layered.

  10. I haven't been able to find anything about it, but at the preseason NHL game in Halifax last night between the Bruins and Canadiens, during the pregame ceremony, they were honoring a former scout of the Bruins who was from Nova Scotia who passed away recently. As a token of his appreciation, the Bruins organization presented his widow, at centre ice, with a 2011 Stanley Cup Championship ring. This is first instance I've heard anything about the Bruins' ring as looking it up anywhere gives me no news about it.

  11. Just a random question, but does anyone know how many banners are in the rafters of the Bell Centre? 24 Cups, plus like 10 retired numbers, not to mention division championships, President's Trophies, etc.

    24 Stanley Cup banners

    17 Retired number banners

    1 Expos commemorative/Retired numbers banner

1 Canadiens Centennial commemorative banner (though they originally has two of this banner and still might, but I only recall seeing one last time I was there in January).

    Total: 43 (or 44)

They have no banners for division or conference championships.

  12. So there's a new wrinkle to the MSG renovation plans. They're going to add "bridge seating" that will be suspended from the ceiling to hold up to 1,000 more fans.

It's a great idea for almost any other arena, but it'll ruin the iconic "Fan Ceiling" that the Garden features.

    madison_square_garden--300x300.jpg

That thing strikes me as a lawsuit waiting to happen.

I agree... Furthermore, two things come to mind. One, there's NO way the NHL would approve of this, especially after the girl in Columbus was hit with a puck. When that happened, up went the nets. Having a sky bridge, regardless of placement (either over the stands or over the ice) would be a HUGE liability. Second, I think of the smaller rinks in the Canadian Hockey League where there are gondolas suspended over the rink for members of the press. Low hanging baskets + high flying pucks = radio PBP members diving for cover!

The media row at the Bell Centre in Montreal is actually a ring of seats just like that that can only be accessed by walking down a suspended corridor that sticks out from the very top corner of the arena. In fact, the radio and TV broadcast booths hang down from this row and can only accessed by walking down a flight of stairs from the ring to the booth. The ring at the Bell Centre though actually hovers over the stands and not the ice and is way too high (even higher than the banners) to ever think about being hit by a deflected puck. The inside edge of the ring that faces the ice surface is covered by what is essentially a gigantic desk, so it would not be easy at all to fall over it without climbing onto the desk first. The outside edge is surrounded by a very tall barrier that would make it difficult to fall over unless you climbed on a chair and then jumped. The walkway of this ring is actually wide enough that you can easily avoid bumping into somebody and thus poses extremely little danger of anybody ever off. While this ring only seats about 360, standing room could easily allow over 1000 safely. If MSG follows this route, I see no problem as far as safety is concerned.

(Yes, I took the Bell Centre tour.)

  13. When you say "floor", you mean seating tier, right? Not like the arena is on it's own floor, like it's an office building and it has stuff above and below it, right?

So from what it sounds like, the theater seems to be nestled in behind the first and second levels of seats, where you would normally expect something like a locker room to be?

    Something like

    *
    *
    *
    *
    * <------200 level seats
    *
    * <----- 100 level seats
    theater *
    theater *
    theater * court / ice
    theater ***********************************

No, he means like an office building. The floor/ice is not at ground level. MSG is 10 stories tall, the floor is on the 5th floor and the seating is on floors 5-10. I've never been to the theatre portion but from the way he describes it I think the theater is below the arena.

Now that I re-read his post, it makes more sense now. Still, it certainly didn't look like a 10-story building. I was staring at it as we walked up to it, and it didn't appear to be much taller than the Wachovia Center or any other arena. Of course, it may have been an illusion, since there's a big tower right next to it.

To get to the theater, we had to go up at least one escalator. Can't remember if more than one. We then walked through the lobby where the bars are to get to the seating, and walked down to our seats. It would make sense that we entered on the second floor, and walked down near the first where the stage is.

It seemed so small though... like it couldn't have taken up the entire floor (unless there's a huge area behind the stage.)

So the ice level of MSG is actually 5 floors above street level? That's a rather unique twist on most other arenas where the ice level is either right at street level or below it. (I know in the case of the Bell Centre in Montreal and the Halifax Metro Centre, they`re both built into the side of a hill so there are entrances at street level at the front of the building and then entrances at the back of the building which are at ice level).

  14. I know that, but I'm trying to find a way to get the 'getty images' watermarks off some of the photos so I can use them for making wallpapers and whatnot. That's why I'm asking.

Buy them from Getty. They aren't going to let people take their professionally taken photos for free.

  15. Well here are my templates, finally. All are in Vector format (Illustrator 8 .ai & .eps both included)

Let me inform you that these are just the templates I use. But since the Hockey and Baseball ones I could only get in raster format, I vectorized them. (I created the Football and Basketball ones with help from the Nike Templates)

Baseball (730 KB) *Thanks to whoever's template this is, I forgot so if it's yours let me know and I'll give you credit.

Basketball (832 KB) *Thanks to AAO for the idea for the side veiw of the jersey.

    Football (1.19 MB)

Hockey (733 KB) *RC's template basically, just vectorized and smoothed out.

I probably should have said something earlier, but I never actually read this thread so I never have any clue what goes on in here...

The template of mine you vectorized is not actually the full template. Not to mention that the sock, pants and helmet templates aren't mine. My full jersey template can be found here. The one you vectorized doesn't have the various cuts or collars.

Although actually, if you or anybody wanted to vectorize a hockey jersey template of mine, I'd strongly encourage doing this one above the other one as this one is already measured out in inches and it constructed as accurately as possible. (As well, you could insert this removable grid layer for convenience, keeping in mind though that the grid is measured in inches to proportion of the jersey and thus must remain the same size throughout.)

    --Roger "Time?" Clemente.

  16. Courtesy the 2002/03 River City catalog, here is the list of NHL teams who use the thicker v-neck collar:

    Atlanta (H, R)

    Boston (H, R, A)

    Buffalo (H, R)

    Carolina (H, R)

    Colorado (H, R)

    Columbus (H, R)

    Edmonton (H, R)

    Florida (H, R, A)

    Los Angeles (H, R)

NY Rangers (A - both white and blue)

    Ottawa (A)

    Phoenix (H, R, A)

    Pittsburgh (H, R)

    St. Louis (H, R)

    Vancouver (H, R, A)

Of course, this is all subject to change for next season! :;):

I thought that Ottawa used it on all three jerseys.  I own a replica home and third jersey, and they both use elastic V-necks.  Oddly though, I don't recall seeing a Sens road jersey that uses the elastic V-neck.
