  1. I realize it's been almost a year since anyone posted in this thread, but I didn't want to make a whole new thread just for this picture. Here's the Penguin's new Stanley Cup banner:

This raises a question on the arrangement of the banners. Do they put this one, and an eastern conference one, next to the other two cup year banners? The others have a division champ one with them so thatd make this one look a little out of place. Or do they put it next to last year's banners?

Or, my preferred choice: Nix the conference and division banners from the first two cup years since those championships should be understood being that they were necessary in advancing through the playoffs, not raise a new conference one for that reason, and put this one with them, and leave the other division/president's/conference ones alone in their own section.

  2. Kind of intresting, comparing the two designs:

    New

They both had their advantages. The new ones are fresh, and clean, and uniform, and its easy to see whats on them. Im glad they got rid of the redundant second division champs banner from '90-91, and used a better term for the 92-93 banner ("president's trophy" as opposed to "nhl champions") I like them.

The old ones, though, had a certain feel to them. They were a part of the Igloo. You took it for granted that youd look up and see those same old banners up there. They were part of the Mellon Arena experience.

Thats about the worst of it. Other than that, the new banners have grown on me very quickly, and I really like them. They will look great in the new building.

  3. when is the Penguin's opening night?

I want to see their banner go up...

    Tomorrow night.

Im pretty sure the banners wont go up, but already be up. If it was just the division and conference ones, they would, but since its those, new versions of the 8 current ones, and 3 other new ones, it would have to be one huge raising. (then again...that would be a pretty awesome sight, now that I think about it.)

....I did not know the Pens were replacing all of their banners. Updated designs? Or were they just old and rotting, like the Oilers?

Just updating designs, and stardardizing them. The old ones, and new ones like them, are good IMO and there was no reason to change, but, eh, whatever.

Like I said before, as long as they keep the old tri-banner design for the two cup wins, Ill be happy.

  5. I'm really curious to see what the Penguins do for their banners from this year, since as far as I know this is the first time they've won more than one without winning all three, and they've done that cool triple-banner "cha mpi ons" thing in the past.

I think they will look something like this, which is basically just like their old ones, only with different colors and conference/division names:

Maybe the real conference champions one will be hung slightly higher than the others in the non-cup group.

But since theres no divisional playoffs, there's no need for a Regular Season designation. You don't think they'd just split Champions across two banners?

Also, I never thought about the color differences between the banners. These will look pretty odd next to the ones with the bright gold.

Well, the others say regular season, so they might keep it just so it matches. Thats why I dont think they'd put champions across both (which I originally thought they would until I took a closer look at the real ones)

  7. Went to the Pirates game tonight. Saw that this past offseason they added World Series banner signs under windows on the front of the pressbox behind home plate. Similar to those in the outfield in Atlanta.

Also, I forgot to mention earlier that, like since the park opened, the pirates' retired numbers are on signs on the front of the upper deck behind home plate.

  8. The Pittsburgh Pirates have flags along the outfield concourse (atop the flood wall, behind the outfield seats). Theyre gold for each year they won the NL Championship but not the World Series (4) with the year in black writing, and black for the years they won that and the World Series (5) in gold writing (personally, I wouldve made the gold ones the years they won the World Series). You cant really see all of them unless you have seats somewhat high up in the right or left field upper decks or are on the concourse itself. I'll have to snap a pic of them when I go to the game on Tuesday.

I always liked the "triple-championship" banner idea, but what would they do if they won another cup in a year where they didn't win the division? It would look pretty weird to have a double-championship banner next to the triples.

Well, they actually didnt win the division both times. At least not in the regular season. The division part of the triple banner shows that they won it in the playoffs, same with the conference part of it. The regular season division championships are hung the seperate group at the other end.

Yeah, but there actually were divisional playoffs back then, so it is still an accurate banner. Now that the playoffs are just top 8 per conference, you could win the cup while only winning your conference and not your division.

Yeah. I hope they keep the old ones if we win it again rather than changing them to be consistent with a new one.
