ยท Leopard #176
This one is Lafayette College.

My goodness, the Ns on that logo.
I always think of that logo as some guy from out in North Platte making his first business trip into the big city. . . . Omaha, here we come!

Ren, I just wanted to let you know that I started using the Lafayette logo on a Lafayette message board and was told it is the . . .
Best. Retro. Avatar. Ever.

Ren69, this is outstanding work. I am addicted to this thread. You are the reason why i created an account simply to say great job! keep it going, can't wait to see more.
I have to say that I'm addicted to this thread as well. It's always fun to check out your latest update ren. Your work is stellar.

^^^^^ That looks more like a black version of The Grinch than a panther.

Gorgeous. Thanks.
Can I use it as my avatar or in my sig?

Thanks for posting the larger image Spearhead.
Ditto. That one is a beaut.
When I was in college, I had a window sticker on my car of a sans serif L with "Lafayette" written on the vertical portion and a leopard in a similar pose (and wearing a sweater, if memory serves me). I have never been able to find that logo. Any chance you might have a copy floating around?

This is fantastic work.
Assuming the image isn't too small, could you do an update of this Lafayette logo?
Thanks in advance.
P.S. It's the least you could do since you did a Lehigh update.

3. Stadium location. No brainer. Like pointed out, most of the area surrounding the stadium is water. Having the stadium in St. Pete really puts the games out of reach for the Orlando/Disney crowd, the Lakeland population, and north/eastern Hillsborough County. I think a lot of visitors to the Disney area would take a day/night to hit a Rays game if it was feasible.
Put me in this category. The Orioles were in St. Pete when I was near Disney for spring break with the family this year. The drive to Tropicana Field was jussssst far enough to convince me not to make the trip. If the stadium was closer to Downtown Tampa, I probably would have gone to a game.

Michael Dean Perry.... and I've still not forgiven him.
He's my Bill Buckner/ Steve Bartman
Shouldn't that be Rahim Moore?

ACC hoops really sucked from 79-91 due to a nine team conference.
The ACC had 8 teams during that period. FSU became the 9th team when it joined.

It's amazing to think about how far Butler has come in the past five years. If this was all taking place before their Final Four runs, they may not have been on the Big East/Catholic 7's radar screen at all.
A few years ago, they were stuck(?) in the Horizon League. Now they're joining forces with Georgetown, Villanova, Marquette and some other historic programs.
It's really not all that surprising when you consider Marquette, Notre Dame, Xavier, Dayton and Saint Louis have all been Horizon League members at one point or another.
Not two years before joining the Big East/Catholic 7 (at least that I can recall . . . but then I don't remember Notre Dame being in the MCC/Horizon League). It's not so much the path that is surprising as it is the speed with which they made the journey.

Edit: Navy to the ACC is a hot rumor today. Obviously a Notre Dame push. If it is true, that is.
I'd consider adding Army too. Adding the east coast service academies would keep some of the "prestige" associated with the top-level academic institutions in the ACC, plus would give a presence (though muted) in both the NYC and Washington/Baltimore area markets.
Are you talking about adding Army and Navy in football only or in all sports? They could arguably compete in football and non-revenue sports. However, neither school has the facilities or potential talent level to be ACC-worthy in basketball. They each play in an arena that seats less than 6,000, with no nearby off-campus facility to use as a standby (a la Georgetown, Seton Hall or St. John's).
-
Not at the upper reaches of Division I and they don't have a football team, but . . .
Boston University is joining the Patriot League.
No word on any other additions.
-
Basketball isn't COMPLETELY irrelevant... and neither is Academics to a couple of the conferences. But they are about as close to completely irrelevant as something could possibly be.
Not true on either point in certain cases. While football controls the discussion in college athletics, men's basketball and academics both are a decent part of it for certain conferences (ACC for both, Big Ten for academics only, etc).
Academics, pfft. You know, as much crap as SEC fans rightfully get for that S-E-C-S-E-C "I hope our rivals win because somehow it makes us better" chanting, the Big Ten is the most masturbatory conference in college sports. At least all that South-will-rise-again stuff terminates at the end of football season; Big Ten circle-jerking permeates every aspect of everything.
F*** football, when's the next womens game in that sport?
Arizona gymnastics meets begin on January 6th......
Will Monica Bisordi be making an appearance?

I have no idea what the ACC's divisions are for football. That may have something to do though, with the fact that I slowly stopped watching the conference after expansion.
I don't think it's that. I still follow ACC football (more or less) and I couldn't tell which teams are in which division.

I like when teams use black.
No surprise there.

Sports Illustrated weighs in in this week's edition --

I can believe that. However, there is one small flaw in the story -- EBW didn't own the Orioles in 1976. They were owned by Jerry Hoffberger, who sold them to EBW in 1979.
I stand corrected - I haven't read the autobiography for closing in on 20 years now.
Maybe you should just stick to the USFL, Mister.
-
It was also something Jackson later stated he regretted - in his autobiography he claimed that Edward Bennett Williams and he had come to terms on a new contract, and in fact EBW had signed one and presented him with it for signature. Jackson kept the document, but decided to test the free agent waters... and the rest was history.

From Wikipedia --
Also, ownership changed hands in 1979, with a twelve-million-dollar sale marking the change from the the familiar stability of Jerry Hoffberger's Baltimore Baseball Group to the edgy, hands-on command of Edward Bennett Williams, a powerhouse attorney from Washington D.C. with ideas about moving the club to the nation's capital. -
That one always pisses me off, since he was gone about 3 months later.
Here is one that should have been on the list for sure...Johnny U in...Powder Blue?
Couldn't agree more that that should have been on the list. That is one of the first ones that comes to mind for me.
As for Willie Mays and Hank Aaron, those never seem quite as odd for me because both moves represented a return to the cities where they spent significant parts of their careers (in Aaron's case, a majority of his career). They are both even wearing the same caps logos they wore in those cities, just in different colors.
