Indeed, "mud hen" has long been a commonly-used colloquial term for the American coot, a species of bird that spends its summer breeding season in - amongst other parts of the American northeast and upper midwest - the Toledo, Ohio area. So many American coots occupied the marshland surrounding Bay View Park, home of the late-1800s Toledo Swamp Angels of baseball's Inter-State League, that local sports reporters took to referring to the baseball team as the Mud Hens in print. Soon, the Swamp Angels name was abandoned and the baseball team - as well as numerous incarnations representing Toledo in various professional leagues at different classifications - were officially dubbed the Mud Hens.
That said, Mud Hens is the exception to the rule amongst the minor-league baseball identities I cited amongst my preferences. The point being, it is possible to create popular, engaging, well-designed minor-league sports brands without repeatedly succumbing to the increased tendency towards embracing a "can-you-top-this" approach that threatens to alienate as many fans as it attracts. The "Swamp Angels" part makes this sound fake, and yet . . .

Yep. Weber State is 100% as well. Utah State and Wyoming isn't far behind at 97% and 96% respectively.
The Univ. of Kansas and Kansas State are 93% and 94%, respectively. I had no idea until my son (11th grader) and I started just looking around online one afternoon.

Good job on both of those sets. I only have two comments/questions:
1. That Toronto Giants identity is a mess. Terrible logo, generic font and a color scheme that totally abandons the team's history.
2. Are you sure the Tampa Bay wordmarks have orange in them? Based on the wood grain surface in the background, the original pictures are in color and don't appear to include any orange. It's hard to tell exactly what the second color is, but it doesn't look like orange.

That's a shame. I've always felt like there was a strong marketing/recruiting opportunity for the Blackbirds in dropping or de-emphasizing the LIU and positioning themselves as just Brooklyn.
It's also a shame because the LIU Blackbirds identity has some real history* behind it.
* -- Ignoring LIU's involvement in the point shaving scandal of the '50s which caused the whole athletic program to be shut down for about five years. That little unpleasantness hasn't wiped Kentucky off of the map.
From Wiki --
QuoteLIU was a national powerhouse in the 1930s and 1940s under Clair Bee, who compiled the highest winning percentage in major college basketball history. The Blackbirds were retroactively recognized as the pre-NCAA Tournament national champion for the 1935–36 season by the Premo-Porretta Power Poll.
The Blackbirds have appeared in National Invitation Tournament (NIT) ten times. Their combined record is 7–8 and they were NIT champions in 1939 and 1941.
Those NIT championships were from the era when the NIT was a bigger deal than the NCAA Tournament.- 1

I don't disagree with you often, but this is one of those times.. The thick black/white racing stripes on the Sox roads were FANTASTIC and it's a travesty that they dropped them (Along with the sock patch)
I agree . . . except to say that they weren't actually that thick . . . particularly compared to these.

Isn't scrapple just the Mid-Atlantic's version of Spam?

(Both are delicious, for the record....pork roll especially)

Scrapple, when cooked well done, is great - AS LONG AS YOU DONT THINK ABOUT WHAT IT IS. I’m typing this from the Melrose Diner in South Philly, smelling the scrapple on my neighbor’s plate, and while it’s not making me hard, there’s definitely a little movement happening.
Pork Roll/Taylor Ham is much more like Spam than Scrapple is.
As for which state scrapple is associated with, I think of it as much more of a Pennsylvania thing than a Maryland thing, though you can get it around here. If anything, the Shorebirds should be named after some sort of chicken product . . . particularly since they play in Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

Not at all. There's a reason why I have a hard time with the concept of looking into a tank and saying, "Him! I'm going to eat him!"
That said, I have no problem steaming dozens or bushels of crabs. Perhaps they lose their individuality in the group.

Unless the mascot in the New England Lobster Rolls' logo is a South African Cape Lobster, he isn't alive. Cape Lobsters are the only species of lobster that are red while still living. If that mascot is a true New England lobster, in order to achieve that crimson hue, he's already met his maker in a pot of boiling water.
Good point. It's like the blue crab. I was about 8 years old when I found out they were blue before they were steamed. It was like finding out there was no Santa Claus or Easter Beagle.
At least he looks like he died happy. He's wearing shades and has a smile on his face.

This one suffers from the grouper problem -- live animal in the middle of a sandwich.
His nonchalant attitude shows that he has no idea that fate that awaits him.

Thank you for the correction. I appreciate the precision.
However, my point stands: the logo should have involved a stylised depiction of wings rather than a realistic picture of the prepared food. The name is whimisical enough; having a goofy logo and wordmark is a bit much for me.I'm going to disagree with you on this. Unlike the Philadelphia Wings or Wichita Wings (old indoor soccer team), the nickname in this case is clearly based on the food. Therefore, it makes sense to use the food in the logo.

I would like to see a secondary with an anthropomorphic wing (or maybe a chicken) swinging a celery stick bat. It would fit with the existing swinging buffalo logo.
Option 2: Remake the existing swinging buffalo logo to insert a celery stick bat.

Travel is an issue - the closest A-Sun opponent (NJIT) is farther than the furthest Big South opponent (Charleston Southern), but apparently they'd rather host championships.
I believe you (this being a geography issue, and all), but this kind of surprises me.
Maybe it's because I don't really know who is in the A-Sun without having to look it up.

I love me a good fresh grouper sandwich, but that's a little too fresh. I don't want all of the scales and bones and assorted internal parts.

sooo... how am i supposed to feel about a team changing their mascot/name to one that deals in illegal activities?
. . . and, to a signficant degree, reinforces stereotypes about West Virginia . . . though on that point this seems to fall into the "group using stereotypical potentially derogatory term to describe itself" category.

I spent many days playing Statis Pro Baseball back in the early 80s.
It always felt like an added bonus that it was a local Baltimore company.

This look would go from a nine to a solid ten if the players all wore their socks the correct way up (matching the sleeve stripes).
How have I never noticed this before? Now I'm going to spend every Redskins game when they wear those socks looking at the stripes.
. . . which is exactly what I did last night.

How did sports teams justify bad public investments prior to Field of Dreams?
By showing clips of Roy Hobbs playing catch with his son in the middle of a wheat field. I don't remember before that.
. . . or did you mean Field of Schemes?
