Oh c’mon man this take is Facebook comments section level bad. You don’t genuinely believe Oregon players are having weekly team meetings to discuss their Saturday outfits.

Those other programs have rich football pedigrees to fall back on so it makes sense that they keep things fairly traditional while programs like Oregon opt to mix things up a bit for their recruiting. I promise you football uniform design has zero correlation with football success, and more importantly I promise you that no team is spending any considerable amount of time worrying about it.

The entire argument is ridiculous. Oregon reached new heights both on the field and in terms of national recognition during the same period they shifted their brand to a Nike-fied experimental team. It's not like they used to play better in their traditional uniforms, they've literally never been closer to a national title than in modern duds. They've come short because it's really tough to win a national title, the sport has horrendous parity, and they've faced some great teams.

Hate their look all you want, but you're right, if there's any correlation it's actually been an obvious boost to the program.

BTW, I HATE the idea of a rivalry game having a presenting sponsor.

Is it just me, or does the orange on Clemson's pants not match the orange on the helmet or jersey at all? Maybe the lack of purple next to it is messing with my eyes.

That's the way I saw it on my screen as well, like it was closer to Tennessee on the pants but more saturated on the helmet. It's a classic look but the lack of purple does bother me.

  3. Red/Blue NFL Teams

Pats: red looks great but traditionally a blue team and the whole "Redcoats" thing

Bills: traditionally blue and look better in blue

Giants: differing home/road color emphasis, works well enough for them

Titans: favors navy, fans beg for Columbia, red has small role in ID

Texans: red alt looks good, but team has been blue first so far

Not sure any of these teams NEEDS to emphasize red, but I guess I'd pick Houston, as they look good in red and have less history to buck.

Just for fun: if the dawg collar made its way to the full set including home and road unis. I don't hate it!

This is pretty cool, but I'd limit it to the black alternate especially since it works best on that jersey.

That OR it'll be revived in the spring (hopefully).

Possibly dependent on a vaccine? It would be an interesting season not only because of the odd timing/circumstance, but it would mean many of the known stars in the league would opt out for good reason. I wonder if any OOC games make it into a spring season, were it to happen.

  6. Ohio State/Ohio University and Michigan/Michigan State are both within 100 miles of each other as well. Lots of states do not have very even population distribution and proximity tends to amplify rivalries if anything, so it's not a shocking trend.

  7. These Virginia logos and the Rams gradient seem to indicate that this may be a new trend going forward (or perhaps it's ongoing and I'm catching up). By adding shades they can create more detailed graphics without going outside the color palette or adding black lines; adding depth without making the image 3D. It goes against the idea that simpler is better, especially in sports, but I'd be surprised if we didn't see a lot more teams doing similar things to their logo packages.

Not sure if this matches what was posted earlier, but this is the supposed leaked secondary logo.

Looking forward to the reveal where they explain how the camel toe represents tradition.

I really like the IS state logo, but not as a read-through. That alone, with a star in the bottom left. Done.

I like the IS state logo a lot, even as part of the script. My issue is that they have multiple state shape logos now and I think they should just use the S one. Slide that over to the S in STATE for the school script.

Don't know if it's unpopular or if it's been talked about here, but the discussion over in the NFL week-by-week thread had me thinking. Super Bowl XLV is one of my least favorite Super Bowls aesthetically. Between the sheer amount of yellow on the field, the terrible Super Bowl patch that looks like it was printed on copier paper and glued on the jersey, the ugly field turf, and the even uglier job that was done painting it, nothing about that game is enjoyable for me to look at. I don't like the lighting in that stadium at night. I'm not a fan of the old Reebok jerseys. The Packers' green always seems to blend into the field turf for me, leaving the game as a mass of disconnected yellow objects. I think it's one of the most overrated Super Bowls in terms of appearance.

Don't agree on everything or have as strong of feelings, but I would agree that yellow pants v yellow pants isn't a great look and this Super Bowl gets a pass aesthetically for traditional uniforms without taking anything else into account.

Normally I can understand where posters are coming from on a topic even if I don't agree, but the A's kelly green - I hate the A's in kelly green and I'm baffled by the love for it. Completely flummoxed. The forrest green the A's use, which has a little blue in it so it skews towards a dark teal, is such a pretty color and contrasts so much better off their bright yellow than the kelly green does. It's why their home hats get my vote for best hat in major league baseball. The kelly green jerseys and hats look like the regular unis got left out in the sun too long. They look like a dollar store knockoff that only had 8 stock colors tshirts to choose from and that was the closest they could get to the A's.

Hating the kelly in ineed unpopular.

Personally, I LOVE the kelly look. But I agree with you that the dark green is simply superior aesthetically.

Well that’s because any color looks better than midnight green

I wouldn't mind a return to kelly but I like the midnight green. The issue with the Eagles current identity IMO is the over-reliance on black. They could eliminate black entirely and just focus on the dark green and bright silver for a cleaner look.

I understand being bored by a lack of flow in the game.  But too often the complaint of "too many flags" becomes a complaint about the rules or about the officials.  However, if the players stayed within the rules, then you won't have many flags. Last week in a CFL game, a beautifully executed fake punt by Ottawa was called back because the receiver was ineligible, as he had not been included in a list of eligible receivers that must be submitted before the game.  I think.  Anyway, no one blames the officials on that; the Ottawa coach accepted that it was his mistake.

Last year there was an incident in the NFL in which a lineman went in for a sack, and then let go of the quarterback when he saw that his momentum was going to result in slamming the quarterback to the turf.  I read plenty of complaints about this, as though it was a bad thing. But, in reality, if a player doesn't do a particular act because he thinks that that act is against the rules, that's exactly how it's supposed to work.  After the Hal McRae rule went into effect in baseball, runners stopped creaming the second baseman on a double play by sliding out of the baseline.

Another important point is that replay review does not have to be boring.  The Arena Football League and later the AAF showed that replay review can actually be exciting if we are shown exactly what the officials are seeing, and if we can hear their conversations and their analysis.  All leagues should follow this example.

"However, if the players stayed within the rules, then you won't have many flags"

No offense but this isn't incredibly insightful, John Madden. It's a sport with a lot of rules. Some are to protect players, some to keep the game fair, etc. Doesn't make it any less boring to watch flag after flag/see great plays overturned/games determined by penalties. Either it's a problem that can be addressed (adjusting rules/gameplay to reduce the violations/interference) or we live with it and stop being surprised that someone finds the sport boring/dumb.

And yes, even showing us what happens in the booth would eventually be boring/is already boring to people who aren't nerds.

Apologies for continuing a technically off topic discussion. Ummmm... I hope the XFL continues using nicknames on jerseys?

The Texans have always looked incredibly dull, like a generic team from a movie. Even the much-beloved road uniforms with red socks still look forgettable.

The name is generic, being like the 5th "Texans" in the states pro football history. The colors are generic as it gets in the states, red and navy. The uniforms don't have any unique elements other than a number font. And I'm not a fan of a mostly navy logo on a navy helmet (the white was the way to go for me).

That being said, no need to change. It's modern, simple, and inoffensive. Just isn't going anywhere high in my uniform rankings.

  15. I can see the "boring" argument for literally any sport. The NFL is by no means immune. @Ted Cunningham made some great points, many I hadn't even considered before. Parity IMO is good but as a result of the sport itself I think football tends to be less individualistic, and so the differences between teams are mired. You don't see player's faces so that takes away an element of individuality as well. We rarely have real "stars" in the league that aren't quarterbacks or their wide receiver counterparts.

My issue with the NFL in terms of excitement: Too many flags. I'm in favor of increasing safety measures, but there are so many complex rules for fans to keep track of and so many penalties. It not only sucks because it constantly kills the flow of the game for reviews or ref announcements, but penalties determine so much about an NFL game. Drives are constantly killed or saved by discipline/lack thereof rather than the talent and execution of plays by the teams. It's boring (I still like watching football, just making the point).

And for football in general, most plays are either a missed catch or a gain or minimal yards by a simple catch and or run. Most of the game time is spent watching a bunch of dudes get in line. Field goals are only exciting if it's over 50 yards or at the end of a game. The extra point is kinda dumb. The kickoff is dumb and dangerous. Punts are boring unless it's returned for a TD. Not hard to figure why someone would find the game boring.

I prefer college football but I think that's largely due to the fact that in college I get to root for Ohio State while in the NFL I root for the Browns. I'd much rather the Browns win a title but even with the Browns having talent on their roster at the moment I'd take an OSU game 9/10.

EDIT: As an example, I've recently watched some football with my girlfriend who basically doesn't care about sports. I actually enjoy explaining things during the game to an enthusiastic listener so it's been fun. She mentioned how many of the penalties/rules feel like whoever created the sport kept coming up with excuses for why they win, "nuh uh you can't touch me after this many yards it's against the rules," etc. etc.

IMO, while the current Browns set has its problems, the Color Rush uniform is by far the worst of the bunch and in no way should it become the primary home uniform.

Brown on brown is bad. The lack of white outside of the helmet is bad. But I'd still take it over their usual look. Looking forward to 2020.

  17. In my dumb opinion, which I may have stated elsewhere, Americans spots only allows three types of team banners:

-Division Championship (in most cases you should list all years on one banner, Wild Card for baseball is fine)

-Conference Championships (only do a ceremony/rings in baseball)

    -League Championship (duh)

Regular season "championships" don't count if the actual champion is determined in the playoffs.

  18. I don't know if I've ever been bothered by a facemask. Even when it's the "wrong" color it just doesn't matter all that much to me. Gray works if it's in the scheme or on a traditional look. White or a team color works in most instances. It's a matter of preference moreso than egregious wrongdoing IMO. And if I was doing a re-design or a tweak of a team's look, it'd be my last priority along with other equipment and under-clothes.

And I have to agree strongly with the sentiment regarding football striping being discussed. It looks cheap and dated when a team includes space between stripes, like the Packers do and like the Browns used to (up to the redesign, the touching stripes are far superior to the below). However, as long as you're consistent about it, I'll live with it.

I think one-offs and alts with brighter versions of a team's colors can be fun, but it's ultimately a gimmick. This, however, where they change to a bright-ass color, COULD work but I'm on the fence with the Hawks. I'm not in love with the old yellow or blue looks, so I'm not opposed to change entirely, but it's strange that the Hawks got so much love for updating the Pac-man logo, indicating that fans were ready for a return to a more classic look, and they went hard the other way.

Don't hate the look, but we all knew as soon as they released them that they aren't built to last.

I don't know why anyone cares about MLB, NFL or NBA uniforms at all. They're boring.

    Hot take! Nice.

I would concede MLB but that's basically it. How are NFL uniforms boring? I assume then that you only care about NHL jerseys? As someone who doesn't watch hockey, it's hard for me to care about them. And even then, I can only appreciate or dislike certain sweaters, do not care about the shorts or other equipment.

Soccer kits bore me and the advertising on the chest makes me lack respect for them.
