I don’t know if it’s actually happening, but there are heavy rumors that Auburn is bringing out orange jerseys for this weekend against Penn State. They are definitely wearing orange facemasks.

I believe it’s been decades since they’ve done that.

In recent memory, they’ve done orange and white facemasks, gray facemasks with the “AU” on one side and “7” on the other to honor a former Heisman winner, and a fauxback with a logoless helmet and gray facemasks back in 2007.

Auburn doesn’t usually change things up, so this would be a big deal.

Soooo, yea this one's been crazy. The photo of the orange mask with jersey material was only posted on Instagram, so they kinda buried it a bit. Turns out that's just the sleeve stripe on a navy jersey.

I've confirmed that Auburn doesn't even have orange jerseys. It's not happening. A lot of fans are upset now because of the hype and playing it up from the football team, the staff members changing their profile images to orange, the other Auburn teams sharing how much they love orange jerseys, and so on. It's a risky move, but the hype and engagement were incredible. Even for me and I didn't engage all that much.

And for the humble plug, here's an article I wrote a few years ago about the history of Auburn's orange jerseys when they returned in 1978. There's always a lot of misconceptions around them.

Is this old news? I thought it looked more like a concept at first, but the designer’s website shows that he worked for the NFL previously and worked on the Jaguars and Dolphins rebrands as well.

There are many holes to poke the concept designs with, but if we're going to cite the designer's website, he has the current Jaguars font listed on the 2013 uniform's page.

Unsure if either was intentional, @Clintau24 is much more likely to know, but Auburn has occasionally worn a Yankees-like uniform in recent years...

    Bo knows Dodgers inspiration

Correct! Those pinstripe uniforms were often referred to as "Yankees pinstripes" by the team. They were replaced last year with a set that includes some more orange and a white hat, so the Yankee parallels are gone.

The Bo look is reminiscent of the cream throwbacks the Tigers wore for many years but have since mothballed and haven't worn since 2018. The orange numbers were directly inspired by the Dodgers.

Auburn has also worn a rather Twins-inspired "Tigers" wordmark back in 1997 and 1998.

  4. I've personally not been impacted with the ads as others have, but I did invite some friends to join the boards the other day. They immediately declined to do, stating they were bombarded with ads and couldn't even see the site itself upon loading. So it's now affecting the ability to recruit new members, which is also a problem.

I am beyond disappointed that I was 100% wrong about the change to the Desert Swarm throwbacks. Why would they use them so much for advertising purposes and then not use them on the field? Ugh...

2020 is unlike any year we've ever seen. The delayed production timelines on the marketing side as well as the uniform fulfillment side have been entirely disrupted.

Auburn did their entire football marketing photoshoot wearing the previous jersey template, despite only using the new template for the 2019 season. Most of the jerseys didn't even include the SEC patch. But once the Tigers hit the field for game one, they were back to wearing the newest template.

As much as we all want to use the same tricks and methods of dissecting every move a program makes, it simply isn't going to work at the same level this year.

I'm fine with other schools wearing camo, but it needs to be used sparingly, like as a helmet or sleeve stripe. Did they say what the gold stars represent? I'm guessing they'd be for Indiana students killed in WWII? That's the only reason to use a gold star, but it shouldn't be used in that manner. Instead it should be used like the blue star/gold star designs instead of that gaudy shoulder design:

But what's this about a jingle?

It's embedded towards the bottom of the article, underneath the "Continue Reading" button. I wanted to embed it here, but it wouldn't allow that.

The article refers to it as a "five-note mnemonic melody."

Additionally, the “This is CBS” mnemonic will be featured on CBS programming that airs on other platforms, like Netflix, which last week began airing the first seasons of the network’s Evil and The Unicorn.

Can't speak on the current "NCAA approval process for jerseys," but an old interview with the Under Armour designer that created the failed South Carolina Wounded Warrior jerseys stated that they send a few samples to the on-field officials to test out. One official said he makes his wife stand in the backyard wearing the jersey to see if he can decipher the numbers from afar.

It's a good interview. Listen if you have time: https://makersofsport.com/episodes/11/adam-clement

I like how they added double outlines to the numbers so it is still technically green-gold-green and thus technically consistent with with the shoulder stripes.

This is the company that tackled Charlotte's jersey number changes. It almost looks like they just slapped a green layer on top of the existing gold/green number

  10. Saturday was a big day for Auburn uniforms.

The Tigers honored the late head coach Pat Dye with a special helmet decal that also appeared on the field (with a solid orange outline, however)

    Image

Current head coach Gus Malzahn dressed up as Dye for the game, which was really cool

And Auburn added a social justice patch to the jersey, the "Auburn Unity" logo that was first announced Sept. 10 with the “Together We Will” initiative, which is set to raise funds to recruit and retain minority students.

    Image

The patch really got lost on the navy jerseys, and I image the same will happen on the white jerseys this weekend.

More information of everything from Saturday on my site: https://auburnuniforms.com/2020/09/28/pat-dye-social-justice-patch-for-auburn-football/

  11. Lafayette has secretly started referring to themselves solely as Louisiana the last few years and I'm no fan of it, personally. There's always been talk about some lawsuit between them, Louisiana-Monroe, and LSU as to why there is no one team that refers to themselves as "Louisiana" for all these years. Don't know the legitimacy of that or the terms, but it sure feels like UL-L has just disregarded it now. I still refer to them with the city name for my own sanity's sake.

  12. Auburn will be adding a memorial decal and field design for the late head coach Pat Dye

    Image

The design features "Sixty Minutes," which is a reference to Dye' introduction press conference when a reporter asked him how long it would take to beat Alabama (Auburn had a 9 game loosing streak).

The helmet decal has 60 orange and blue stripes around the circle to further tie into the quote. The on-field logo has a solid orange circle.

  13. I actually really like what Georgia revealed yesterday. I think the white throwbacks are beautiful and a wonderful look. I feel like I'm in the minority of liking the dog collar, though I don't care for the dog head logo. I never liked that logo when they first revealed it.

I've had many people tell me that Georgia copied Auburn for the white throwbacks, solely because of the sleeve stripes. And the connections to Ohio State have also been stated. Please. Northwestern Stripes are a common design, especially back in the day, and no one team "owns" them like some people like to think. It's always interesting to me what details some people like to grab on to.
