  1. What I find so strange about the "Fleck"ing of his program's uniforms is that PJ Fleck has said before that his favorite college football uniforms are Penn State's. I guess this is a case of catering branding toward his coaching philosophy and not actually making good looking uniforms.

I thought that those would be painted on?

There’s definitely a stickered helmet floating around, but it’s probably just for a cheap promo piece.
If you look closely at the team-released images and video, you can pretty clearly see the “overspray of the black paint into the helmet’s ventilation holes.

It is quite odd how many of these have dropped this week out of nowhere. It’s almost like teams are coming up with these as we speak

All primary and alternate helmets must be fitted at the beginning of training camp. So this is one last push to release designs before inevitable leaks.

I won't be surprised when a team unveils a new helmet suddenly before kickoff.

With the second helmet rules, that would be border line impossible to keep under wraps:

Alternate color helmets must be worn in practice at a minimum during the week leading up to the game in which they will be used

  5. New uniforms for Georgia Tech, returning to traditional stripes and old gold. In some scenes the golds match pretty well, but in others they don't, so we'll have to wait and see how they look on the field.

I actually liked their previous Adidas set with the stinger motifs, but these look great, too.

Nevermind, just noticed the mixed use of metallic and flat gold. That's rough.

It’s hard to see, but the Longhorn collar logo appears gone, and some are speculating the shoulder numbers were dropped, too (it’s a single digit number, so I don’t think this one image proves anything).

This post confirms no TV numbers.

Not to defend the guy, but isn't plausible that he's just doing a photo op here to mimic the goofy cake topper on the wedding cake? It's not like the guy was standing at the altar in a Dolphins helmet. I'm pretty sure there's some strange pictures of me at my wedding, too.

I'm glad someone finally said it – no reason to believe it's anything more than a funny photo-op. Turns out it made the media rounds in 2017.

Is it just me or do all the stars seem to be inconsistent with sizes? Almost looks like the bigger the hat logo, the bigger the star. Rangers/Orioles/Jays/Brewers all look bigger, while the Mets/Tigers look really tiny.

And why is the A*s star integrated into the logo, but no others are? It's like an exec went up to 4 different designers and said "Hey make a couple All-Star hats. Just put a star in the corner by the logo somewhere. That should be good." and those designers had no idea about the others.

Did they start using the Nuggets wordmark font (I’m sure there’s a name for it) before the Nuggets or after?

Funny you ask that – I actually brought that up to our AD of Branding when the Nuggets revealed that brand. Austin Peay unveiled their Joe Bosack brand in 2014, 4 years before the Nuggets rebrand. Can't find who did the Nuggets rebrand.

The typeface are incredibly similar – some subtle differences in some corner "serifs" and terminals.

  10. New turf design for my alma mater Austin Peay. Personally, I think it's just okay. Could use some more black, and the wordmarks in the endzones are still too small (they were even smaller on the last design).

Also, while the state is centered on the 50 yard line, the 'Gov head' within the state is a couple feet off-center. Would have much rather them center the logo based on the Governor and not the state outline.

  11. Vanderbilt has unveiled a new university-wide brand identity, replacing the StarV unveiled in 2008 and AcornV used academically. It's definitely a different direction than what they have used recently, so I'm saving my thoughts until I see it in action. The new logo will be used on athletics uniforms starting in 2023.

    Edit: Nevermind, this is terrible.

    No.

Don't get me wrong, two-tone blue is and should be the foundation of the Titans, but I think on the navy jerseys, having both prominent gray and columbia blue leads to a look that is too busy. The sword-yoke can stand out as the feature element of the uniform, and minimize the other components.

IIRC, wasn’t there a rumor back in 2018 that Tennessee was going to emphasize red in the new set?

I actually just went back in time to look at the reaction – the emphasis on red was an obviously unfounded rumor.

I think the current set has a lot of potential – a lot of good negated by some bad components. It's a good evolution of the old set, which was too aged and wasn't fit for a team named Titans, especially with the logo.

The new set transformed the shoulder yoke by utilizing the sword from the logo. However the look is muddled up by so many colors vying for space ( navy primary, columbia secondary, and red and gray as tertiary. I think if columbia was relegated to a stroke color on the navy and white would clean things up and let gray stand out more. Look at the helmet for reference, majority blue, with a good amount of gray and little columbia and red.

Cleaning up the uniform – removing the armpit block, changing the pants stripe, and simplifying the numbers – would really hep the overall look.

For the presence of red in the look – it's being embraced more and more in accessories, somewhat as a call back to Keith Bulluck's signature red gloves. I think the Titans can really champion the blue/grey, with splashes of columbia and red, look that more accurately fits the Titans moniker.

I don't get the sense anyone in Tennessee is particularly clamoring to be the Oilers. Less certain about the Houston market but even there there seems to be less consternation than, say, Charlotte during the Bobcats era.

Both teams could use smarter design but something as disruptive as a new name doesn't seem needed.

Nashvillian here – Titans fans are crazed about Oilers throwbacks making a comeback. I think as a whole, Titans fans and the organization have a lot of pride and respect for the Oilers lineage. I think a big reason for this is the immediate success in Nashville with a lot of big names that started their careers in Houston – Jeff Fisher, Steve McNair, Eddie George, etc.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned, but to me, the dot-diamond thing going on in the bottom-right image is implying some sort of gradient texture within the numbers, kind of like some hybrid between the Seahawks and Rams.

I've really been trying to figure out what the bottom left image is showing. At first glance, the angled seam would indicate that it's showing the arm stripe. So.. the same stripe as the 2nd row, right column... just showing the light jersey instead of the dark jersey. Clearly though, the widths are different, and there is a lack of that diamond texture in the yellow-white-yellow stripe.

Does this mean that there is going to be a weird inconsistency in sleeve stripe design from home<-->away, again much like the Rams?

Or, does the white inner stripe "fade out" in to a different color using a dot gradient and we just can't see it in the teaser image...... like this sort of thing:

    spacer.png

The bottom right image has been racking my brain as well. At first glance, it seems like the back number with the white jersey seam, but that doesn't seem totally right.

    • the kerning is way too tight for them to be numbers
    • stroke width isn't consistent with the home jersey
    • the home doesn't have the dot gradient effect
    • the material looks different than the home – rubberish material on home and cloth on the away

That being said, I don't know what else that could be. If I had to guess, I'd say we're looking at vastly different home and away sets.

  16. Did some deep watching of the helmet video. I think there are multiple helmet options:

    • the burgundy with yellow facemask clearly shown
    • burgundy facemask seen at :09 seconds
    • black helmet with black facemask, with what appears to be a number on one side (definitely not the W)

The helmet handed to Rivera does not have a yellow mask – either gray, burgundy, or black. The blur of the burgundy helmet shows a singular yellow stripe, not two-tone.

A couple guess: they have not finalized helmet design, they will mix and match shells and masks, or there are some smoke screens involved.
