Just about to kick off the 1998 season in the Alt History of the USFL (Website here), which means that NIKE will be announcing which 3 teams will get facelifts for 1999.  The 3 1998 clubs (Washington, Baltimore and Memphis) kick off their new looks and now 3 more teams will get a facelift.

I actually have 4 designs ready to reveal, some just tweaks, some whole new looks.  So, which of these 4 teams should make the cut for 1999?

    Oakland Invaders

    Birmingham Stallions

    Pittsburgh Maulers

    Portland Thunder

Only 3 will make the cut, and this could be the last year for NIKE, with bids coming in for the USFL uniform and fanwear contract starting in 2000 (and Phil Knight no longer the principle owner of a club.)

I thoroughly enjoy what you've been doing here and will disregard the new USFL for the abominations they've rolled out for this year.

    Keep up the great work.

    Ottawa Senators

Up next is the Senators. Their most recent rebrand/uniform update was pretty disappointing for me. Don't get me wrong, it was 1000% better than their previous set, but that doesn't mean it was good. I was unimpressed with the lack of an update to the logo or uniform design. I went with something new, using ideas I think everyone uses for Sens uniform concepts. I used their greatest logo they never really used. I know Sens fans hate it for some reason, but design wise, it's the best logo they've ever released. The only thing I changed on the logo was making the arrow type details on the gold a darker shade of gold to match the pattern I put on the uniform. I also brought back the Peace Tower logo for the shoulder patch. If anything, I maybe didn't include enough red on the home and road, but I was pretty pleased with how it all turned out anyway.

For the alternate uniform, I combined the O logo with the alternate shield logo they used from 2011-2020. I also went with the sleeve striping from their earlier years. Just not on the entire uniform, because that's a little busy for me.

The city uniform uses the Peace Tower logo front and centre, as it represents Ottawa pretty well, being a big landmark in Ottawa. It uses the city of Ottawa flag colours, as well as the jersey striping from a couple different uniforms the Sens have worn for special events. Nothing too crazy, but I think it fits pretty well.

The city of Ottawa has a long history with sports teams using red and black as their primary colours (Original Senators, Roughriders/Renegades/RedBlacks, 67's junior hockey, etc.). Gold has never really been used much as a complimentary piece let alone the secondary colour. I feel like this would look better if the red and gold were swapped.

While I work on the Bucs adjustments, here are two new teams:

    First, the Detroit Lions.

Detroit's 2017 overhaul brought them back to their roots, ditching the black, but a few tweaks are needed to truly make the look complete. (PS. This was the first team I did, before I started using team-specific player NOBs).

    • Thin white stripes are placed in between the northwestern-style stripes, just to make the helmet look a bit more like the Barry Sanders-era.
    • Gray is ditched completely: the all-gray Color Rush was 86'd, and the numbers on the home uniform are blue with silver outlines.
    • Blue pants are now paired with silver socks, just like 1998

This is fantastic. I am hopeful that this is what the Lions will do with the rebrand they've announced for 2023 (maybe 2024 when we host the draft). There's a lot of elements I liked with the 2017 rebrand but losing white was not one of them.

    Great job.

One more for you before the Chicago reveal.  Here are the new look New Jersey Generals.   Some keys:

    1. Return of the laurel leaf logo, but still with blue outlining (see USFL 2022 for inspiration).

    2. Drop shadow numbers. with gold and blue outlines.

    3. New secondary logo (too good to resist) now a patch on the chest.

    4. Side panels morph into pant stripe with an "epaulette" concept (Tried it on shoulders, did not like it.)

    5. New wordmark with state of NJ included for emphasis.

I like the addition of the gold. The blue stripe is an interesting touch that is growing on me.

I really do not like the chest logo and find it clutters the design. Thoughts on adding the laurel to the sleeves and move the numbers up to the shoulders?

  5. Those Breakers jerseys are outstanding.

I like the Generals as a whole but it feels like it's missing that pop of gold from the logo. I don't if a wordmark or a number outline would help but i just feels a bit light.

    Hi all,

I am in the home stretch of the 1993 USFL season in my Alt History Simulation and we are going to have 2 new uniforms for 1994 and the announcement of 4 expansion teams.   In the next few days I will reveal on that site the 1994 new look Tampa Bay Bandits and the logo/name for the newly announced 1995 expansion team in Atlanta.   I always like to give this group a preview of what I am doing there, because this is where the real hardcore uniform and logo fans are.  So, for today, here is the new look of the Bandits.   Below will be a question for you about the Atlanta team.

With the Bandits look I really wanted to lean in a bit more on Burt Reynolds as the owner, the image of Smokey & the Bandit,  but also I wanted to have Nike (the uniform provider) start to experiment with uniform elements much as they did with the Broncos, and with  schools like the U. of Miami back in the 90's.  So, this uniform takes inspiration from Western style button down shirts with their embroidery patterns, as well as incorporating the new TB monogram logo with the very Burt Reynold's cowboy hat.  The other noteworthy change is that I am using much thinner stripes on the helmet and pants, again to emulate the kind of embroidery we might see on a western shirt.   Let me know what you think.   Remember that if you click on the design you can get a zoomable image to see more detail.

So, next up is the reveal of the logo for our 1995 Atlanta franchise.  I will do that in a couple of days, but wanted you to take a guess as to which identity I went with.  Remember that I am basing any new identities and some updated logos on real teams that existed in the WLAF, NFL Europe, CFL-USA, Arenaball, and as we get into the 2000's you may see some XFL, AAF, UFL, FXFL, or XFL2.0 concepts turning into USFL revisions/expansion.   So, here are 5 possible Atlanta teams, which do you think will be the identity for a 1995 expansion team?

    A.  Atlanta Centurions (NFLECologne)

    B. Atlanta Posse  (CFL-USA Las Vegas)

    C. Atlanta Predators (Arena Orlando)

    D. Atlanta Fire (WLAF Birmingham/Rhein)

    E. Atlanta Red Dogs (Arena New Jersey)

It might just be me but I feel like there are two issues with this set (as nice as it is).

    - Pant stripes: These feel way too traditional for a jersey set that is experimenting with funky stripes.  The pants typically will have matching funky stripes

    - Helmet Logo: I feel like you should use the horse and rider logo on the sleeves of both jerseys, replacing it with the TB logo on the helmet. You'd get that balance by not over-using the TB logo while the horse logo just seems too detailed to be seen from afar.
