The Chicago Cubs are playing the Florida Marlins in a game at Pro Player Stadium. Chicago is ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth. Juan Encarnacion is on third, and Alex Gonzalez is on second, with two outs. Juan Pierre, the batter, bunts the ball down the first base line, and starts running down the inside of the baseline. Catcher Michael Barrett fields the ball cleanly and throws to first. The ball hits Pierre on the right elbow when he's about 5 feet from first and caroms into the dugout.

How many bases are the Marlins' runners entitled to? Luis Castillo is the on-deck hitter. Should he bat, where would the runners be?

By rule, the batter (Pierre) is out for interference and the game is over. Cubs win. There is that secondary line drawn for the latter 45 feet of the baseline and the runner is supposed to run between that and the foul line.

Then again, tell that to the Joey Cora of 1995 Seattle Mariners and their opponents, the 1995 New York Yankees and Travis Fryman of the 1998 Cleveland Indians and their opponents, the 1998 New York Yankees (specifically Chuck Knoblauch) and they'll tell you that sometimes the umpires don't necessarily see it that way.

Its a part of baseball, the main goal is to get the catcher or whoever to worry about you and make an bad throw, not to get hit. If your the Catcher you shouldn't worry about the runner, clear the space and throw around him just in case. (Inside! Inside! or Outside! Outside!) If you don't have time, nail the SOB in the Back! :) But as the runner, you don't want to get hit, Cause most of the time if you get hit, your out. Its one of baseballs cool little games within the game that make it so great IMO.
