K-State gettin' all Huggy

Bob Huggins, the long-time Cincinnati coach who led the Bearcats to 14 straight NCAA Tournament appearances and a Final Four in 1992, has accepted the job of head basketball coach at Kansas State, according to published reports.

A news conference is expected later Thursday, the Kansas City Star reports.

Huggins' agent, Richard Katz, told The Associated Press early Thursday that Huggins had not yet signed a contract.

A source close to the situation told ESPN.com's Andy Katz something would be known by the end of the week.

By the way, the published reports came from FoxSports.com. It was weird to hear that source cited on Sportscenter.

That KSU-TTU game should be a good one, don't you think?

For Huggins, this is a good fit. A historically weak program in a major conference, in the middle of nowhere where he can establish and run his own program more or less on his terms. He can bring in all the juco transfers he wants, and he can make K-State competitive quickly.

For Kansas State, you get what you pay for. Sure, it'll bring more exposure for the school as the team improves and finds itself on the national radar, but a lot of the attention Huggins generates isn't the kind a university necessarily wants - ill-mannered players who don't graduate being led by a coach who doesn't believe in rules... or laws... or designated drivers. I don't know that Huggins is a good fit at any university from the standpoint of the school.

Before you respond that this is a cheap shot, consider this: you're the parent of a D-I prospect being recruited by a few schools; if you're really looking out for your son's best interest, would Huggins be the sort of man to whom you entrust your son's development, athletically, morally and personally?

"Start spreading the news... They're leavin' today... Won't get to be a part of it... In old New York..."

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

. . . would Huggins be the sort of man to whom you entrust your son's development, athletically, morally and personally?

Athletically, maybe, but definitely not morally and personally.
