<_<

Nothing says "flexing our muscles" by beating a European team with only a handful of their regulars actually available to play. Regardless, kudos to Justin Mapp on the game winner, what a move.

Oh, and LandyCakes scored a PK. Call me when he scores in a significant game... <_<

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

i realize that the first game of the 2010 cycle shouldnt be read into too much, but to be fair we also fielded our "B" squad. This match was essentially an exhibition for reserves and role players on BOTH TEAMS. I mean the game winner was scored by the 22 year old MLS rookie of the year.

As for Landon, its true he is subject to the "what have you done for me lately" atmosphere present in sporting culture nowadays, however I do find it disappointing that he has recently become subject to this scrutiny, one, simply because he is well on pace to easily break the national scoring mark. But more importantly how he almost single handedly carried the 2002 squad on his own through the 2002 WC. I would be the first to argue the goals he scored that summer, specifically the game winner against Mexico in the round of 16, were in SIGNIFICANT GAMES.

Landycakes gets that scrutiny because a lot of die-hard soccer fans feel that Donovan, a truly talented player, bailed out of Europe way too soon. Even more irritating is the MLS' efforts to brand him as some conquering hero who "chose" their league over the Bundesliga. Hell, he was playing in the Champions League against Liverpool in Anfield at one point. It also doesn't help that he stunk it up in Germany last summer.

I agree with Fred T. Jane in granting Kudos to Mapp. He was electrifying at times yesterday. It was also nice to see three goals scored by players getting their first U.S. cap.
