  1. The sartorial history of the Jacksonville Jaguars has been a progressively worsening s***show since 2002. It's been one dubious design decision after another from that season on. There was no need for black jerseys or black pants... and certainly no need for black unitard combos. There was no need for logos on the hips. No need for black numbers and black names. There was no need for teal flake helmets. No need for wispy, barely-there piping. There was no need to drop the unique alphanumeric font introduced in 1998. There was absolutely no need for gold-to-black fade helmets. No need for a complete overhaul of the primary logo into something more akin to an illustration, when a slight tweak to the original logo's lower jaw would have sufficed. There was no need for team logo "shields" over the heart. No need for truncated insert stripes on the pants. There was no need for mustard - pardon, gold - jerseys or pants... and sure as s*** no need for mustard - pardon, gold - unitard combos. There was no need for teal pants... and no need for the inevitable teal unitard combos that followed. Bottom line? The best the Jacksonville Jaguars franchise ever looked was during the 1998 through 2001 NFL seasons when they sported a certified modern classic uniform that - to my mind - stands as one of the best in NFL history. Full stop.
  2. Next up? Replacing the penalty boxes with pillories.
  3. The rink for the NHL games is situated adjacent to the lake, on the 18th fairway of the Edgewood Tahoe Resort's golf course.
  4. Humane Indiana has sponsored a Festival of Owls in Valparaiso for the past few years.
  5. Bluefield's Appalachian League team has been rebranded as the Ridge Runners. The new identity pays homage to the region's rich railroad history. The Ridge Runners' home - Bowen Field at Peters Park - straddles the state line of Virginia and West Virginia, as did the namesake of the team. Beginning in 1964, the original Ridge Runner No. 36 locomotive - the world's smallest interstate railroad - circumnavigated a one-mile loop atop East River Mountain, half in Virginia and half in West Virginia. The train now sits just beyond Bowen Field's right field wall. Today, fans of Ridge Runners baseball can hear the sounds of excited passengers as the train makes its loop through Lotito Park.

  7. Shouldn't the school's color palette feature "The Citadel Blue" for consistency's sake?
  8. You missed the Johnson City Doughboys threads. Appalachian League introduces Johnson City Doughboys New App League team Johnson City Doughboys pays homage to WW1 soldiers
  9. Yes, I'd mentioned that in the team-specific thread that Pharos04 started. Frankly, whether a conscious artistic choice or a gaffe, it's a detail I find annoying.
  10. Pulaski's Appalachian League team has been rebranded as the River Turtles. The name is a nod to Pulaski's heritage as a community within Southwest Virginia's New River Valley, as well as a sign of the team's "renewed commitment to Calfee Park's family-friendly culture".
  11. Kingsport's Appalachian League team has been rebranded as the Axmen. The name references the role that Daniel Boone and a team of axmen played in blazing a trail from Tennessee's Long Island of the Holston through the Cumberland Gap of Virginia and into Kentucky.
  12. Here's the obligatory Appalachian League roundel for Pulaski. One has to wonder why the River Turtles' mascot is sliding into home plate from behind the "dish"?

  14. It's clearly meant to play to the locals. After all, the team's GM must have known when making "the strong history of patriotism" remark that it wasn't going to get much play outside of the league and region. The Appalachian League is confined to a fairly small geographic footprint: four states, ten cities, with five of the host communities all within the Johnson City-Kingsport-Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area. The odds of anyone from outside that immediate region hearing said statement, let alone being insulted by it, are slim. Hell, I'm the type of sports branding enthusiast who manages to be amongst those few souls who are the exception to said rule and I don't find it either particularly patronizing or insulting. It's standard marketing-speak... nothing more, nothing less.
  15. Greeneville's Appalachian League team has been rebranded as the Flyboys. The name references the fact that Tusculum Field - an airport that served the region from 1948 through 1968 - was situated on land adjacent to the site of the ball club's current home venue, Pioneer Park. Additionally, it is meant to honor the strong history of patriotism in the area.

  17. The Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. currently lists 159 of artist E.M. Viquesney's 'The Spirit of the American Doughboy' on display in 38 states, including eight statues within the Appalachian League's geographic footprint of North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Of those eight, just one is in Tennessee and/or an Appalachian League market - the statue outside of TVA Credit Union Ballpark in Johnson City. Said statue was purchased by American Legion Kings Mountain Post #24 and presented to Johnson City and Washington County in a dedication ceremony on November 11, 1935. The statue has since been rededicated twice - on November 11, 1974 and August 30, 2013 - and stands at the entrance to Johnson City's Memorial Park, a recreation area that includes the aforementioned ballpark, an amphitheater, community center, fitness center, senior center, swimming pool, and tennis courts. Notwithstanding the presence of 158 other mass-produced doughboy statues on display elsewhere in the country, it strikes me that the 85-year presence of Johnson City's copy of the statue, its proximity to the ballpark that the municipality's Appalachian League team calls home, and the fact that the city's earliest minor pro baseball teams were named the Johnson City Soldiers for ten seasons - including nine in the Appalachian League - make the adoption of the Johnson City Doughboys identity particularly apropos.
  18. Elizabethton's Appalachian League team has been rebranded as the River Riders. The new identity is inspired by the recreational opportunities available to water sports enthusiasts on the rivers in and around Elizabethton - particularly on the Watauga River, which flows by just beyond Joe O'Brien Field's outfield fence. Front and center on both the team's primary league logo and alternate logo is Rookie, the mascot of Elizabethton's Appy League team since 2005.

  20. Johnson City's Appalachian League team has been rebranded as the Doughboys. The new identity was inspired by a statue - The Spirit of the American Doughboy - that sits just behind the team's home stadium, TVA Credit Union Ballpark. It's also a nod to the Johnson City Soldiers teams that represented the community for ten seasons in the Class D Southeastern (1910) and Appalachian (1911-13, 1921-24, 1937-38) Leagues.

  22. While, today, the Iberian Peninsula references the landmass that is home to Spain, Portugal, Andorra, Gibraltar, and a bit of France, its name is derived from ancient Greek (Iβηρ, or Iber) and Roman (Hiberus, or Iberus) names for what is now known as the Ebro River. Said waterway is located entirely in Spain.
  23. "One of these things is not like the others... one of these things just doesn't belong..." Wow! The Wild Bills logo is rough. It really stands out amongst the Wild Wild West League marks... and not in a good way.
  24. I called Brandiose using a Honey Badger as the mascot in conjunction with this name three months ago. You just know that the gang at Brandiose has been waiting to create an identity around this "crazy, nastyass" animal since it burst on the scene in a viral video ten years ago. Played out a decade later? They "don't give a **** !" The logos are sharp. At least with the honey badger, the trademark Brandiose mascot side-snarl is fitting.
