New fiscal Year starts July 1.
The Horizon HQ is in Indianapolis; they were talking for a while. The IU trustees met two weeks ago, so this move was likely made then during Executive Session.
Even so, how much transition is actually necessary? Conference schedules are done by the conference, OOC shouldn't be affected.
Maybe signage and such, but what else?

If not for the for-profit thing I could see them as a WCC team if Gonzaga or BYU bolts.
Or possibly an expansion to 12 if Seattle bails the sinking WAC ship. Which would actually work out nicely for travel partners.
Gonzaga/Seattle
Portland/BYU
Saint Mary's/San Francisco
Santa Clara/Pacific
Pepperdine/LMU
San Diego/Grand Canyon
GCU basketball would probably be the 4th- or 5th-best team in the WCC right now.

According to sources, Savannah State will drop to D2 in Fall 2019.

That's why half the league membership WANTS to leave.
Exactly. Look at the membership now:
CSUB - a recently-transitioned from D2
Chicago State - terrible budget and possibly could close entirely
Grand Canyon - for profit university transitioning from D2
UMKC - also-ran in most things
NMSU - basketball and little else
Seattle - came from the Great West and has been D1 for less than a decade
UTRGV - an also-ran
UVU - a recent JUCO that moved up
and now Cal Baptist from D2.
Half of the membership is recent D2 callups. The rest is rejects. I doubt anybody is happy in the WAC.
I do feel for Hawaii, as their distance makes them struggle to maintain a D1 program.
-
Then in that case, a joint bid with CSUB would be great. CSUB's basketball is probably good enough to sneak an at-large bid every now and then.
Hawaii in the Big West is just odd, but where would you put them? The WAC? I think it'd be cool if the Big West were a California public university-based conference, since there are so many.

The student referendum was specifically for joining the Big West. Plus, there was an expiration date placed on joining. Be in the Big West by Sept. 15, 2018, or the student approved fee increade is voided.
I knew about the expiration date, but I didn't know about the conference-specificity of the referendum. I wonder if they tried to do a general D-1 referendum if it would pass.

Big West rejected UCSD's application for membership.

It's clear the Big West doesn't want them. Why don't they try to join the WAC? It might not be the best fit overall, but they still would have two other local partners in CSUB and California Baptist.

No. It still would put the Big South in the same pickle because a team moving up is considered ineligible. Not to mention what dfwabel said about the state placing a cap on funding via fees and the general fund.
Jacksonville and Stetson, on the other hand, don't have those hurdles to deal with. Thanks to the alliance between the Atlantic Sun and the Big South, should those two schools move up to play scholarship football, they have a home. It's a win-win for both sides.
Jacksonville won't do it. That's a big reason why Kerwin Bell isn't the coach there anymore. He claims they told him they'd start to offer scholarships and reneged on that.

They're that desperate to be UMass Amherst? As an independent, that's essentially what they'll likely end up being.

The Big Twelve has had far worse luck on that front.
I wonder if this is a big part of the reason why they didn't expand. They can still have a championship game and get the revenue that way, but do it between the top two teams. The way things have gone lately, both of those top two teams have been in the playoff picture. It may be that they wanted the winner of the championship game, even if it was the lower-ranked team in the season, still have a shot at the playoff.

In other news, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference will not move forward with expansion. The Minnesota State will stay in the WCHA for now and Arizona State is still looking for a hockey home.
I went to one of the games that ASU played against UMass Lowell last year. ASU played hard for two periods, then got really chippy after that. They scored the first goal before ultimately losing 8-1.

I wonder why Boise missed the cut. They'd be competitive in football and basketball.

Davenport (MI) just got accepted into the GLIAC and will transition to DII

On another note, I wouldn't be shocked if, eventually, Division 2 goes bye-bye. They seem to have many of the costs (scholarships and travel and other things) that the Division 1 schools have, but none of the TV revenue.

I've always liked that Humboldt one.
I live in New Hampshire now, and there are three (soon to be two) D-2 schools in state:
Franklin Pierce University Ravens in Rindge
St. Anselm Hawks in Goffstown, which borders Manchester. They're moving down to Division 3. (Alumni are pissed, but I haven't heard anything rescinding the move.) They're angling to get into the NEWMAC.
Southern New Hampshire University Penmen in Manchester. (They just bought the naming rights to the soon-to-be-former Verizon Wireless Arena.)
All three are currently in the Northeast-10.

UCSD students are voting this week on a referendum to increase their fees to allow them to move up to D-1 and a possibly Big West invitation.
Didn't UCSD already try to pass an initiative like this, and it got declined?

On the topic of division 2 schools I read that d2 hockey does not have a national champion and only has 6 teams... is this true? If so what is the point of having it at all?
They don't. Only the Northeast-10 sponsors it at that level, with only Stonehill, St. Anselm, SNHU, Assumption, St. Michael's, and Franklin Pierce sponsoring it at this level. Fellow NE-10 members Bentley and AIC (Atlantic Hockey), and Merrimack (Hockey East) sponsor it at the D-1 level. UMass Lowell used to be in the NE-10 and played in Hockey East before they moved all their sports up to Division 1.
The teams play each other, in addition to a mix of D-3 and club teams.
If I'm not mistaken, there's also no D-2 men's volleyball.

I love the use of f-holes on those Nashville logos!

I'm sure there's got to be a bigger version of this out there, but American University does have an eagle logo. Here it is:
Logos associated with failure.

According to Wikipedia, the reserve team did get relegated to Bayernliga Süd, which is the level below the parent club.
