It looks like this was the old look? They don't seem to have updated their website, www.uvisports.com, with the new look. Also, the uvi.edu site doesn't easily link to uvisports.com. Terrible web design all around here.

I guess something I've learned here from you and @BringBackTheVet is that far fewer people are just aware of Scottish clans. I guess as someone with Scottish heritage I just naturally associate the word with Scotland. I would have never imagined that other people's first thought would be to think of the KKK when they just hear the word "Clan" rather than assuming it referred to actual clans. :censored: white supremacists ruining perfectly good words.

For me, I don't know about Scottish clans. If I were to hear a "The" before the word clan/Klan, I'd think of the KKK. Otherwise, just hearing the word "clan" would make me think of just a general group of people. It's not a word that's in my vernacular, but that's my association with it.

That said, even that tangential connection, especially when you'd be referring to the team in a way like, "We beat The Clan in basketball," would bring that association without context.

Could SFU have gotten away with not changing the name? I feel like, from my vantage point in New Hampshire, that they totally could have. However, I don't know what kind of uproar there was or wasn't in western Canada for the nickname of an NCAA D2 institution. But, being able to get away with not changing the name and it being a prudent thing to do to change the name are different things. If they come up with a unique nickname, that would be awesome.

I know the school loves having the NCAA designation, but I would be way more interested in following what the football team was doing if they went back to playing Canadian ball in Canada West.  Been to SFU football games and would so much rather go to UBC ones because of who the opponents would be.

Would have more of a vested interest if SFU was playing UBC, Saskatchewan, or Manitoba for example rather  than Azusa Pacific and Humboldt State.

I actually wish that there would be a way to either merge USports and the NCAA or move more Canadian (and Mexican) schools into the NCAA as a whole. I think, for example, that Carleton University in Ottawa would be a top 40 team in Division 1 in men's basketball. They regularly beat NCAA teams in exhibitions and have won 15 out of 18 USports championships.

Not really sure if this belongs here, but I don't know where else it would.

    Would the NCAA consider enacting an anti-Confederacy themed nickname policy, similar to the one involving Native themed nicknames? As far as I can tell it would only effect a few schools;

Washington & Lee Generals - named for General Washington, but also General Lee (This ones kinda iffy)

    Ole Miss Rebels

    UNLV Rebels

Millsaps Majors - in honor of Confederate Major Reuben Millsaps

The ruling could also be expanded to school names, which would knock out a few more.

It could. However, I would think that W&L and Millsaps nicknames could be made general enough to not evoke any confederate imagery.

The names of the schools themselves, that's another thing for people way smarter than me to tackle.

I believe Incarnate Word University is affiliated with the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.

Yes they are. I included them on the list because they are a Texas-based thing with two "orders," one in Houston and one in San Antonio. Since it was Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word being the organization that--is it oversees?--UIW, I included them.

I'm not familiar enough with Catholic religious orders to know exactly how that all works, the differences between Jesuits, Franciscans, and however many others there are.

My Wiki research essentially was looking at each school's Wiki page and seeing whether the affiliation said "Roman Catholic (Jesuit)" or some other such thing, or if it was just "Roman Catholic."

So forgive me if I made any mistakes in my admittedly cursory research there.

In addition to being the North Star State's second D1 school, it is also (I think) the second Catholic school in D1 not to be affiliated with any specific religious order (it's affiliated directly with the Archdiocese of St. Paul & Minneapolis, just as Seton Hall is with the Archdiocese of Newark).

With some quick Wikipedia research, so take that for what it's worth, it seems that there are a handful of such schools:

    • Incarnate Word
    • Mount St. Mary's
    • Sacred Heart
    • Seton Hall
    • Bellarmine (reclassifying from D2)
    • St. Thomas (will reclassify from D3)

In OAC news, Capital University announced that they will retire the "Crusaders" name.

Some people will see it as "pressure" because of Washington's announcement today, but look closely, and it said it took place over 15 months, so it started back sometime in April 2019.

Reminds me of when Holy Cross did their study and decided to retire the crusader logo, replacing it with the "HC" shield, but kept the nickname.

I think what bothers me most about it is that the sloppy parts are extremely easy to correct, and the fact they weren’t makes the approach seem very lazy. Some designers use a grid to construct thier marks, some rather align it to a grid after construction to align things correctly. In any case, the top slant is something that should have been quite obvious with the aid of a grid, and I really question how thorough the work was here if they didn’t even bother to check how everything aligned.

The top slant is intentional. 9 degrees. Represents "energy" or some such nonsense.

PDW must be really inexpensive when compared to other firms. This is the only explanation I can think of as to why they still get work even though everything they do looks like it came from 1997-2006. I know that there are better artists/designers that frequent these boards that could do a much better job and would be over joyed with whatever PDW got paid to make these.

I'm sure that, and that they somehow have a good portfolio. They've done work for Alabama, Arkansas, three U. of California campuses, Colgate, Delaware State, Fordham, Brown, Harvard, Houston, Iona, James Madison, Lafayette, LSU, Ole Miss, NC A&T, W&M, and University of Washington. That's four SEC schools in their profile, an Ivy, two Pac-12 schools, among others. So that, I'm sure, does carry some cachet that helps them get work. Likely AD's go to their counterparts at various schools and ask, "Who did you use to design 'X'?"

Tarleton State's move isn't official yet, but the idea is that they're going to be in the WAC for all sports outside of football, which will be an FCS independent.

This is... a strange move, to a degree. They're in danger of being under the six school limit to considered a legitimate conference next season. They're losing Cal State Bakersfield to the Big West and Kansas City to the Summit. In return, you have two D-II invites (Dixie State and Tarleton State) coming in as replacements. Cal Baptist will only be halfway through the reclassification process. The WAC is basically one move or Chicago State closure from being dead meat.

Consider that the WAC has two west coast religious schools that could both conceivably end up in the WCC in Seattle and Cal Baptist, should they wish to expand. Also, Grand Canyon is religious and could themselves end up in the WCC.

This conference is barely more stable than the Great West conference was. (Notice that the WAC features THREE former GWC members in UTRGV, UVU, and Chicago State.)
