Not possible. The hypothetical arena is being built by the guys trying to bring the NBA to Seattle. Hockey is always going to be a secondary consideration even with a team at Key Arena. That said a secondary consideration Coyotes in Seattle are better than the no consideration Coyotes in Glendale. No, not really. I'm not sure they're there to simply accept the check. Remember Gary is the current owner of the Coyotes and does have a vested interest in the proceedings tonight. And he may be there to issue an ultimatum prior to the vote in person as well. Informing them that if they vote for their proposal (as appears to be the current plan), the team will be promptly filling their U-Haul's and heading up to Seattle for 2013-14.

Uh, yeah I do. I haven't watched hockey in two years, and won't until it comes back to Hotlanta. You've got the Gwinnett Gladiators. That's all you're getting. Ever. Go support them. They've allegedly got the votes for the plan 4-3, but if the agreement they approve still has the municipal out clause, RSE won't sign on for it. Could it be? Could this be the end then? Because as I understand it if they haven't dropped the out clause by today by law they cannot vote on a plan w/o the clause today.

When Stern saved the Kings he not only gut punch Seattle's hopes of getting a basketball team, he totally screwed Bettman's master plan.

Well they didn't release anything in advance of the NHL BOG meeting. And it's not even clear at this point that they'd be able to release anything with enough public lead time. Though it looks like RSE has requested a July 2nd special council meeting be called and the 3 holdover council members per usual are also requesting it (the three of them have got a lot of experience at this point bending over and presenting themselves for the inevitable screwjob). Which would seem to indicate it is the other 4 council members holding up the deal (which makes sense since this is essentially the same deal they all ran on a platform of opposing when the other party was Jamison). Well nothing new tonight. They still don't have a deal and Glendale still wants more concessions from Renaissance before they go forward with the deal. Basically Glendale has wised up and realized that all the bones Renaissance was throwing them were tied to game-day revenue, which hasn't been very good or consistent for the Coyotes over their lifetime. In addition they didn't vote on the city hall sales plan to pay for the $50 million they've already had to pay the NHL because the NHL played the, "you can pay it in installments if you approve the new deal" card. They'll take another crack at the negotiations on Friday it looks like. But they're also expressing doubt they'll be able to meet the July 2 deadline. Frankly I don't see why they just don't call the NHL's bluff at this point. And they didn't take on $15 million in annual wasteful payments to a hockey team AFTER they sold their city hall either. Hopefully the new owners and NHL take this into account. Because they won't be getting $15 million annually from Glendale when they file for bankruptcy protection in a year or two. It's those damn pensions for public workers I tell you. For Stockton it was, definitely. For Glendale it'll be the Coyotes if they go through with this lease. Hopefully a bunch of citizens come out and tell them that tonight. Time to give up on the failed Westgate experiment, sell the land and try to make some money back that way.

Wow, just gets worse and worse in Glendale in the run up to tonight's first public meeting on the new potential lease. Looks like the city council is going to be voting on authorizing the sale of Glendale City Hall to pay off past debts incurred at the hands of the Coyotes and Dodgers. They'd then lease it back, but would no longer have a city hall. On top of that they still haven't identified how they'd pay for the $15 mil annual payment to the Coyotes under the new agreement being bandied about that they may or may not vote on by July 2. In principle that sports should be self sustaining, yes it is. But in practice in Glendale... it'll be disastrous. If they're already having trouble drawing, which they are, with free parking and tickets costing very little relatively now... they're not going to do better when ticket prices up $5-10 a ticket and parking costing $15.

Looks like some of the details of the deal that would keep the Coyotes in Glendale if approved have leaked out. The main takeaway for the day to day Phoenix fan is that every fan on average would have to pay $20 more a game to attend between the cost of parking and ticket surcharges. Which is sure to help pack them in for a team that's already struggling with attendance. So what? Honestly I'm to the point where I'm rather enjoying the NHL using one of their franchises to make an ass of themselves. Now they'll continue doing just that and we get to watch them do it in a different surroundings. So was it really the city manager in Glendale that brokered this "deal" with the NHL. Because it sure doesn't seem like the Glendale council is all that enthusiastic about it. Which doesn't surprise me since all of the new members ran on a turning down this kind of deal platform.

For the NHL? It's in French Canada and it would be the smallest market in North American pro sports. Which means it's not exactly helpful in TV deals on either side of the border where Phoenix or Seattle are larger, more interesting markets to the TV guys. And not just any part of French Canada, but a part where French is almost exclusively spoken. Which means it's not a place players are all that fond of going reportedly since so many of them are not even native English speakers and would then have to learn a 3rd language. At least these are the excuses I've heard. Take them as you will.
