  1. Guess we know why the city council was talking today about having a new vote on the terms of the proposed deal. They've just lost their funding mechanism and don't want to have to sell their office chairs.
  2. And just to add insult to injury for "Jamison's" group. The city would have to hold a whole new round of council votes to change the lease (which Jamison isn't to keen on changing) and which seems likely to happen.
  3. So basically "no, dumbass, you can't throw it out because they didn't write a serial number on it." Also seems to say that the city clerk can't be trusted as the arbiter of what is and isn't valid. Looks like this will go to a ballot. bosrs, you're a law-talkin' guy, right? Can you laymanize any of that for us? You did a good job of that yourself. Looks like the appeals court disagreed with the lower court that the ballot measure was misleading (that was the main reason the lower court ruled for the city was the measure was seen as misleading). They also appear to be saying that while the petition didn't identically comply with statutory requirements it did substantially do so which is enough to overlook things like the missing serial number. Basically it's back on the ballot unless the city appeals to the AZ Supreme Court. However do remember that even if this goes on the ballot and the tax hike is shot down by the voters, the city is still on the hook for the separate deal with Jamison should he come through with investors by the end of this month. Which means they'd be back to selling off furniture at city hall to pay Jamison. But Jamison only has 7 more days to finish his deal or it's off without another extension (he already got one on July 31.)
  4. Word trickling out that this was overturned in the appellate court. This could be bad news for the Precious Roy Investment Group. Round and round it goes, where it stops nobody knows!
  5. Well we're halfway through August and Jamison appears no more ready to buy the team now as he did July 31. Wonder if they'll give him another extension when the current term expires at the end of August.
  6. No kidding. This is the most rigged game ever played, and they still can't seem to close the deal.
  7. Hopefully not. But it looks like the city is giving him another month even though the original deal expired last night (July 31). http://www.fieldofschemes.com/2012/08/01/3604/would-be-coyotes-owner-gets-another-month-to-not-buy-the-coyotes/
  8. Hadn't seen anyone mention this. Glendale has "won." GWI is not going to be suing them over the rejected referendums. http://www.fieldofschemes.com/news/archives/2012/07/5023_coyotes_referen_1.html
  9. You see Glendale has rejected the other referendum too challenging the tax hike that will pay for this misadventure. They rejected it because they didn't include their group's serial number on the petitions. Talk about a technicality. They've already sued the city over it. Hopefully the judge throws the book at Glendale in the interests of justice. A serial number has no bearing on the text of a referendum or whether people would be misled by it.
  10. You know what's really funny, Glendale very well may get what's coming to it. If the tax referendum passes in November and they do approve the Coyotes deal, Glendale will be on the hook for their deal with Jamison with no way to pay for it. Talk about comeuppance.
  11. Reminds me of when Mayor Quimby and the Laramie cigarette officials dethroned Lisa as "Little Miss Springfield" because Homer wrote "OK" in an area on the registration form that said "Do not write in this space." They're now at the point of finding any and every excuse to keep their pet project alive. Normally I'd laugh, but reading what the guys running the petition did wrong they sure didn't follow the state mandated rules very well. Why GWI let these old guys with no clue run the petition themselves without making sure they did the required technical stuff right is beyond me. The city may have thrown it out on technicalities, but they were well within their rights to do so. It's not like the things they didn't do were hard to understand. But I'm sure GWI will bring this all up in court... and find some excuse.
  12. Is that a joke or is there a real article saying that? There was an article that, more or less, whined about the Jets not making enough of a deal about their time in Atlanta. What's to make a big deal about? The Thrashers sucked, their owners were pathetic, and their fan support was tepid. How would you feel if the Anaheim Kings virtually shunned the team's history in Sacramento? The Thrashers did win a division championship, and a couple players did win some awards that the league hands out annually. It's not like nothing happened. They're a step below what the Kings have been in their time in Sacramento..... It's not an illustrious history, but it is the franchise's history nonetheless. But I don't really care if the Jets consider it their history or not. i'd feel fine. The Anaheim Royals wouldn't be the Sacramento Kings so I would actually prefer they not sully the history of the team in Sac by trying to claim ownership of it the teams time there.
  13. http://www.bizjournals.com/phoenix/news/2012/07/09/proposed-coyotes-voter-referendum.html?page=2 It'll end up in court again. The city is claiming it was 30 days from the vote and the 2008 election that governs which would mean July 9 (today) was the deadline and that 1862 signatures were needed. The GWI and the two guys they represent are saying it's 30 days from the day the emergency measure the city voted on originally was overturned which would be July 16. And they have a good argument because the emergency measure prevented referendums from overturning the vote. So no referendum could have had any effect until the day the judge invalidated the emergency measure. They're also arguing that they only need 1131 signatures because they claim the 2010 election was controlling. This'll end up in court again and who knows how the judge will vote. It would have been better if GWI had just come up with the 1862 and turned them in today. But I hope the court will side with the GWI since the guys and GWI had 8 less days to collect signatures between the vote and the court overturning the emergency measure. However I think the city is probably right on the 2008 election and higher number controlling since the 2009 controlling state law I read states the last "city wide" election is controlling. "City wide" election being the last election where either the mayor or a councilman was up for city wide vote. Since their council is a district based council the only city wide elected member on it is the mayor (the rest of the council are voted on by their districts only). And she was last elected in 2008. But we'll see. All I know is it doesn't look like GWI turned the petition in today, but this isn't over yet.
  14. Is that a joke or is there a real article saying that? There was an article that, more or less, whined about the Jets not making enough of a deal about their time in Atlanta. What's to make a big deal about? The Thrashers sucked, their owners were pathetic, and their fan support was tepid.
  15. Frankly I think we need to get off the NHL's back. Not saying Phoneix hasn't been an ongoing trainwreck of epic proportions, but it's also not the only trainwreck in the big 4 right now. Looks at the disaster the Maloofs are making out of Sacramento? OITGDNBA?
  16. News gets better. The GWI folks have enough signatures to force the ballot measure. Turns out the city wasn't aware of their own rules when they said it was 1862 signatures that were needed. Turns out the "controlling election" for this ballot is the 2010 election in which 11,309 people voted in Glendale. So GWI only needed 1131 signatures, which they already have. http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/blog/eye-on-hockey/19516772/reports-opposition-has-enough-signatures-for-coyotes-vote-could-team-be-folded And on top of that the other referendum, to torpedo the tax hike that's funding this errant venture, also was turned in to the city with plenty of extra signatures and will all but certainly be on the fall ballot. Which means even if GWI somehow fails, the city may not have the funds to go forward with their little scheme. Is it already too late to relocate them?
  17. Looks like Goldwater isn't the only opposition anymore. All 7 city council candidates in the upcoming election are also calling for the city to hold off on approving the final lease (and all 7 of them currently oppose the deal). So if Goldwater holds this up until November or more likely until 2013 since we're passed the November ballot initiative cutoff today, then the new council would may get to vote on it, and they won't be approving the deal. http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/local/articles/2012/07/02/20120702glendale-council-candidates-ask-delay-phoenix-coyotes-deal.html
  18. Does anyone know what the final filing date for things to go on the November ballot in Glendale is? I've been hearing that it's actually July 5. Which would mean if the GWI waits until the 6th, 7th or 9th to file their petition that it wouldn't even make the November ballot but might actually have to go on an even later ballot in 2013. Which would really kill the Jamison deal.
  19. Don't know if I'd say they got their asses handed to them. I don't think many expected they'd win this part of the ruling. What was more important was the earlier ruling giving them the ability to work to hold the referendum by killing the "emergency" part of the ruling. If this public giveaway gets to the voters it's dead. All you have to say is the T word and people will kill it out of pure reflex never mind after they read all about it and consider it on its lack of merits.
  20. I just don't get it. I don't understand how any Coyotes fan can defend this. "Without our hockey team, how will we show the rest of Arizona that Glendale is a virbrant metropolis, the equal of Paris or New York?" I liked this comment better. "The petition going around now is to bring this decision to a vote, not for the peoples' voices to be heard, but for the deal to be killed by people who oppose any sort of government action to help improve the economy." Last I checked that is exactly WHY we vote in this country. It's the way people's voices are heard, and if those voices say kill the deal because it's crap than it will be done. If they want people to vote their way they have just as much time to convince the people of Glendale to vote with them. But considering their mortgaging their city away to do it... THAT is why they don't want people to vote, they know it's a bad deal and they haven't cared.
  21. I just don't get it. I don't understand how any Coyotes fan can defend this. "Without our hockey team, how will we show the rest of Arizona that Glendale is a virbrant metropolis, the equal of Paris or New York?" They'd have been better spent building an Eiffel Tower if that was their intention.
  22. No one talks enough about how that Camelback Ranch thing is just as much a disaster as the Coyotes/Jobberdome. "It has two team facilities separated by a fully stocked pond! We didn't pay for it!" You can't fight City Hall, but apparently you can pawn it off. EDIT: oh and http://www.azcentral.com/community/glendale/articles/2012/06/20/20120620glendale-possible-sales-tax-hike-referendum.html Sports. What's amazing is how much of a money loser Camelback has been for Glendale when just up the 101 Loop, the Peoria Sports Complex has proven to be an economic boon for that city. What is so different between the complexes or the cities that has led Peoria to actually make money on theirs while Glendale is hemorrhaging?
  23. Well the amount of signatures GWI would need by July 8th was confirmed today. 1862. That's it. And they tie this up until at least November and that assumes the measure doesn't pass. By July 8th we should know one way or the other if Jamison is still on board.
  24. The NHL didn't sell the rights to the Jets to TNSE until after they purchased and moved the Thrashers. TNSE didn't want the rights to "Jets" at first, though. It's still true. MLB hasn't taken control of any of the team histories like the NHL apparently has done.
  25. What's to revolt against? He just got Glendale to all but bankrupt itself to fund a team. And he's made them tons more money on top of that. If anything for the owners he's been one of the best commissioners they've ever had. Face it, the Coyotes situation may be bad for the fans, but for the owners it's turning into a seemingly never-ending gravy train courtesy of the idiots running Glendale.
