  1. The beef came from the fact that Grand Canyon was, at the time they became a Division I school, a for-profit school. They've since changed their tune on that and I think everyone is better off with that.

As for the bracket itself... Woof. All the 5-12 games are scary this year. Don't be shocked if all four end up as upsets for the 12 seeds.

  2. What Hartford did was completely different. They're dropping down to Division III, where the costs are far, far smaller at that level. Not to mention that the *ludicrous* amount of schools in New England alone means that there's always competition for them to play against at that level.

Also... Two years? Nah. That wouldn't work. Division II already has a three year period and many schools see Division II as best place for their programs. As of right now, there are seven schools in the transition process (D'Youville completes it this year; followed by the trio of Allen, Edward Waters and Emory & Henry; Then you have the trio of USC-Beaufort, Thomas More and Westmont) and six more schools (Jessup, Menlo, Middle Georgia State, Roosevelt, Sul Ross State and Talledega) looking into it. That's a little more then the 10 schools moving up to Division 1.

So, Merrimack is about to be in the position Bellarmine was in last year, on the cusp of the conference tournament, but ineligible for the NCAA or the NIT because of the four-year ban all incoming schools face as a punishment for daring to cross over into D1.

They will be eligible beginning next year, but I've never heard a good reason for why the ban is a good rule in general, only "that's the rule and it has to be followed."

The reason I've felt as to why they have the restriction in place is to make sure that schools don't take advantage of the money they could earn in D1 if they make the tournament and then just pull the plug on the plan and drop back down into D2.

Also, schools making the jump to Division 1 have to make sure that they can reach the financial and academic goals set by the NCAA to become a D1 school. Not everyone can make it, but those who do are pretty happy.

  4. Out where I live, Winlock and Naselle are probably the worst offenders on this list.

Winlock has the current Louisville Cardinals logo with a deeper red while Naselle uses a reversed Tennessee Titans logo with a 'C' in it instead of a 'T'

The only other offender for out here is Wahkiakum. They use the mule logo from Central Missouri.

Where I use to live (Iowa), the biggest offenders are Clarinda and Gildden-Ralston. Clarinda just outright uses the Arizona Cardinals' current logo and Glidden-Ralston is basically the Kansas State 'Powercat' logo.

    Some other offenders include...

-Carroll, who managed to combine both the Wishbone 'C' and the Missouri logo into one

-Coon Rapids-Bayard uses a logo from North Greenville, but I believe they got the okay for that one.

Surprised Kyrie was traded to the Mavs of all teams.

Reeks of a desperation move by them though. They're probably worried about Luka fully committing to the team so this is there attempt to "win now" with him.

It's not so much of a surprise as it is the owner telling him that he wasn't going to send him to the Lakers - a final middle finger to a player who has been a royal pain in the ass these last few seasons.

Orlando, Arizona, Jacksonville and Iowa are in other leagues.  Not sure if they want to go back to the Arena League.

Yeah... Arizona and Iowa (along with Green Bay and Quad City) are in the IFL while Orlando and Jacksonville (along with Albany) play in the NAL.

I think that Orlando and Jacksonville would jump at the chance to compete in something a little better then a third tier rinky-dink league like the NAL if the Arena League came back. Arizona and Iowa? That might be a tougher sell since the IFL has become the de facto top league among the indoor leagues.

  7. Ain't this interesting?

There is an opening for the Arena League to come back, but they need to have a really good game plan for this to work.

As for the cities? Well, I think it should be a mix - some legacy teams (Tampa Bay, Orlando and Arizona come to mind) and some newer teams plucked from the current indoor leagues with a few new locations that the original incarnation or even AFL 2.0 never touched.

Caught up to speed on Kliff being in Thailand. One way ticket and 5 years paid to do whatever the :censored: he wants.

My feelings are somewhere between “this man in an absolute idiot” and “this man is a :censored:ing genius”.

How bad do you have to be as a football coach to flee the country? On the other end, he doesn’t have to lift a finger for half a decade and gets to relax and be paid for it.

Why not go to the middle - an idiotic genius. His coaching skills are very idiotic, but getting a one way ticket to Thailand (probably Phuket) after getting paid a boatload of money and then getting canned?

    Pure genius.

I don't blame him for being mad here because Cincinnati could get hosed if they lose to Baltimore. Here's the thing - all they need to do is beat Baltimore. That's it. That whole scenario that would induce a coin toss to decide who hosts a Baltimore-Cincinnati playoff game goes away if the Bengals beat the Ravens.

Also, the plan for a neutral site AFC Championship Game also goes away if all three teams lose in the playoffs. It's a long shot, but you never know...

Russia threatens to leave UEFA for the AFC. Even though they're currently banned from international competition, I don't see how this helps them when they are allowed to start playing again. They would be the big kid on the block to start, but the level of international club competitions and national team competitions aren't likely to help them as much as they  would in UEFA. The money is going to drop off too, so it's not as good an idea as they think.

I wonder if this ties in more politically here.

Now, as for a boost... I doubt it. Neither the club teams or the national team has been able to play international competitions since the invasion began. The national team only has one win since the invasion began - to Kyrgyzstan.

Also, where the hell would they fit in?

  11. Adding that Chili Bowl in Cincinnati would help with the potential restructuring of the bowl system with the expanded playoffs coming in two years.

The idea I have is to put the remaining 36 bowl games into tiers with Tier 1 games being the oldest and most prestigious games (Sun Bowl, Gator Bowl, etc.) while Tier 6 are the newest bowl games (the Chili Bowl would go here)
