  1. Interesting that the Rockies had to drop an alternate to make room for their City Connect,

I literally just logged in and came here b/c I noticed that the Braves' cream alternates are no longer being sold, have not been worn, and are absent from MLB The Show 22 (the Show isn't perfect with uniforms but are usually pretty on point).

I was wondering if it's possible the Braves dropped the cream Sunday alternates and were possibly going to consider making these '74 pullover throwbacks part of the rotation -- as so many fans have wished for over the years.

The only thing that is interesting about the Rockies saying they are "making room" for their City Connect is that other teams like Arizona have a bunch of regular rotation jerseys + the city connect, so I think that's more PR spin and stuff that comes on a team-by-team basis rather than something mandated by Major League Baseball.

Either way, I am kind of sad the Braves' alternates have been scrapped. They were not only my favorite, but a good template for if they ever wanted to move away from the Native American iconography (dropping the tomahawk logos) and possibly just rolling with the cream jerseys as a new template while replacing the sleeve logo (not many people like the roundel/tomahawks logo anyway) with something else.

Anyone have any insight on this? I figure it's possible I've missed something.

  2. I literally forgot about Teal until now, holy crap my brain just unloaded all of that memory back out of the recycle bin and I am sitting here howling on the inside.

As a former journalist, there's a phenomenon in the "reporting" world that also applies to rumors/leaks in other arenas: when people announce they "know something" but don't say it (i.e. "stay tuned," "don't ask how I know," "wait and see") it's almost always B.S.

Credible people don't dangle nuggets for attention.

The Panthers are wearing their Day 1 uniform set, what is the common sense move for them to make?

On the 49ers: I preferred the 2 stripes but the 3 stripes doesn't look bad. The 2 stripes matched the helmet and pants stripes and looked great. I also much preferred the previous wordmark.

To be fair, there's a fundamental here that is an issue both San Francisco and Carolina have had: use of jersey real estate.

For the 49ers, it was fitting the classic triple stripe on the sleeves -- which clearly would fit

For the Panthers, trying to retain their original uniform actually just doesn't fit on the modern template. The contrasting collar is gaudy, the sleeve swoops don't work, and the jersey is so crowded near the shoulders that their TV numbers are the size of a laptop sticker.

In both instances, it's not the concept of design at question, but the application of it. Both are no-brainers.

  4. There should be an intro course to these boards where the first chapter states that it's totally okay for the Packers & UGA, who agreed to share a logo literally over half a century ago, share a logo. Neither institution seems to mind. It's never an issue, it looks great, it's iconically tied to both, and yet people still bring it up as if it is an issue that needs resolution.

The New York Mets use a logo that belonged to the New York Giants. The Twins, Reds and Bears share the wishbone C. The Braves and Alabama have very similar A monograms.

There's a big difference between very specifically rendered contemporary graphic design getting yanked and institutions that were around back before the graphic design age that shared similar but embroider friendly emblems that became a part of their central identity.

  5. I've always loved Philadelphia's modern uniforms -- UNTIL deciding to introduce black jerseys, pants and now a helmet.

The midnight green does the job. The addition of grey, or I guess Nike would call it anthricate, was random but not invasive. Black was fine as logo filler, but wearing black jerseys/pants in prime time games, black pants now on the road and next season a black lid is way too mid-major collegiate of them.

The deep, shiny green, wonderfully detailed modern wings, the sleeve logo, the original (funky, yes, but original) number font. They really should never wear anything but this, save the unbalanced script below the collar.

  6. I agree with FlyersFan, the TCU horned collar is no gimmick. It's unique to them, is applied in a way that doesn't clutter other parts of the uniform/isn't forced into the collar itself. It's a rare occasion where Nike thought out of the box and did something awesome.

Just get rid of all the other noise on the uniforms and stop with so many rotating pieces. The purple/red alternates HAVE to go. Stick with a purple helmet shell and a white one and call it a day. Their identity is great, they just mess around too much with alternates.

  7. Yikes. The academic mark is fine, but the athletics application is going to cause tons of issues. It's making me think of the Georgia Force rebrand when they lost their rights to the original logo, and that is still in my opinion one of the worst rebrands of all time. Not great.

  8. I've always liked the black uniforms for the Mets. It could be because I am a 90's kid so it was my first conception of them, but the orange and blue on black reminds me of the vibrant NYC lights coming off the buildings at night. It's a fitting colorway considering their moniker.

  9. I would like to see the Falcons use a red shell that works as an alternate first, a throwback second. I am sure there are people here that will scoff at that, but a deeper, satin red shell that can be fitted with a black facemask and the standard logo.

    • Would make the gradient uniform look more presentable, a true red-to-black transition from head to toe.
    • Would give them the option to wear a red-black-white combo at home that is modern.
    • Then you could swap out for the old logo and helmet stripe when you wear the throwbacks.

The throwback shell used before is too orange-tinted and glossy. I think the Falcons should have some fun shooting for the best of both worlds.

  10. The good:

    • the nickname is fine, honestly
    • I love the satin shell of the red helmet, and don't mind switching to a red facemask either

    ***stretches fingers***

    The bad?

    • "W" monogram and roundel are generic, uninspired, have nothing to do with moniker.
    • W stencil logo on helmet uses negative space, but number font has white key-line that actually ruins the stencil numbers, which would look decent if they were yellow with burgundy stitching outline to create the same negative
    • The sleeve stripe on the home jersey is literally just a larger version of the Chiefs. Cool, you just got rid of a classic look and ironically, while trying to move away from your old native American brand, adopted a stripe from an iconic team with a native American brand
    • The white roundel on the back of the home jersey looks ridiculous and will be distracting
    • The "COMMANDERS" script with the topper font makes the jersey script look really clunky
    • The pants and socks being monochrome are clearly a sign that the NFL players think it's "cool" and "slick." Kind of like how Atlanta was doing this until only after a season they realized it looked bad and started at least wearing contrasting pants
    • You can't really wear the white pants with the burgundy jersey because the numbers are yellow, so it won't look balanced
    • The road jersey is the biggest slap in the face to the franchise possible, considering they have worn white jerseys preferably at home since the 80s. The dotted gradient is a holdover of Nike technology from the Pro Combat era, which was one of their lowest points UNTIL NOW.
    • Again, and I can't scream enough, no details on pants or socks at all????
    • The little flag patch on the alt is kind of cool -- why not lean into that?
    • If simply bordering a nameplate with two random stripes is supposed to be unique, you need new designers. I get there are two stripes in the flag, but they aren't oriented that way at all
    • The black helmet with the little W sticker on the front is one of the worst things I have ever seen and has no place on an NFL field
    • AGAIN, WHO IS DECIDING THAT THE UNITARD LOOK with mono pants and socks is good? This all black uniform is an atrocity

This is honestly the laziest rebrand the NFL has had with Nike. Cleveland got really funky, but honestly the only thing I disliked for them was the wordmark pants -- they at least emphasized the tri-stripe, I thought the seam stitching being colored was kind of neat, the helmet update was fine. The Seahawks, Vikings, Lions, Jets Bengals and Falcons did a really great job of putting up guard rails and making sure Nike could get in there without losing sight of their brand (yes, I think the Falcons uniforms, now that we have seen them in the right combos, are really nice). The Buccaneers, Jaguars circa 2013-14, and this are utter disasters.

They needed to change their name, not their visual identity. I would have loved some minor tweaks, maybe add the satin helmets, tweak the striping in the DC flag pattern but make it consistent across the board, add pant combos and fine, a black alternate.

But this is discombobulated, lazy, and honestly arrogantly an affront to what fans appreciate about the NFL. Yes, Nike has pushed some pretty weird things into the hopper since taking over, but the mistake here falls on the Washington franchise for clearly not having any thoughtful people pulling the strings with the branding.

Embarrassing. The Clippers rehash from 10ish years ago with the stupid lines is the only one I can think of that is this close to an inexcusable disaster. And this post is this long because people on this board are super talented and can cook up stuff 1,000 times better during their lunch break on a Monday.

  11. I've got a wildcard prediction: the Falcons will add a grey pant to their set. I think it's definitely notable that they unveiled red pants and red socks but never used them, probably because they were so soundly rejected by fans.

A lot of fans asked for grey pants after the unveil because of how it would balance out the facemask, and the top brass with the Falcons/ATLUTD have a pretty good track record of listening and reading the room.

  12. Those Oregon uniforms are stunning. It takes some serious innovation and design skills and production techniques to make something like that. For Oregon, that's a uniform like we have never seen before. Definitely seems to be taking the liberty TCU did with the objects around the collarbone area and taking it to the next level. I love the texture, and the thought process behind it. Right up my alley in every way. Really cool.

  13. I'm a HUGE fan. The throwback is just flat out perfect, and the black jersey is a cool canvas to try some new things. The collar is a bit goofy, but I have always loved that Bulldog logo and think it looks amazing on the sleeve. Also, happy to see this means they will actually wear black jerseys this season.

  14. Just because a team wears a certain stripe in one part of a uniform does not mean it has to exist everywhere else. Now, if a team combines classic stripes with modernized piping or inserts, sure, that looks odd. But a striped helmet with plain jerseys and pants or a plain helmet with striped jerseys is totally justified.

  15. Right, but when ordering from a catalog, why would Nike give the option for sleeve logos to be set so low? That's still on the manufacturer, unless the school said "can you please make the logos tuck into the pads so you can't see them."

  16. I don't understand how so many people on these boards just prefer block fonts and chest wordmarks over something intentionally designed. The shoulder stripes and the well done bevels that tie into the logo make the current TAMU set a modern classic. I don't think they need to change a thing.
