  1. nope, it's not http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derivative_work
  2. It is legal to rip MP3s of CDs you own. It's called phase shifting. You are also allowed to rip DVDs you own to a hard drive or whatever for backup purposes (NOT to be shared). But guess what--breaking the copyright protection on DVDs technically violates the DMCA! Isn't this a great country? and yeah lolling at the weak-ass justifications being tossed around in this thread
  3. They can't apply United States law to foreign companies. These places are mostly in China and Hong Kong. Yeah, that's why the closest they've gotten is seizing domain names. Seems like eBay is itching for a lawsuit though. Look at all the powersellers who deal in tons of obviously fake jerseys.
  4. They just seized a ton of counterfeit jerseys at a freight terminal around here and as a result the letters to the editors page got a bunch of comments lately. A couple of them were actually not-so-veiled bigotry against illegal immigrants for some reason and there were a couple "oh boy I feel SO MUCH SAFER now that the government has seized illegal clothes". Um, yeah, that's what ICE is for, to enforce laws relating to imports and goods. But in these people's imaginations, they ignored the van full of illegal immigrants and a couple hundred kilos of cocaine so they could seize counterfeit jerseys.
  5. I've seen a couple hockey jerseys like that too. The 91-92 Mario Lemieux jersey with all the patches, the 93-94 Canucks jerseys (various players) with all the patches, Sidney Crosby Rimouski jerseys with the Memorial Cup patches, absolutely no one sells those jerseys legit. Or the original Pittsburgh/Buffalo Winter Classic fakes. The NHL simply did not sell authentic jerseys from that game, replicas only.
  6. This isn't a good discussion point because it's stretched so incredibly thin. I hear it a lot as the last refuge of people who know they are wrong--most commonly, software pirates. "Ok fine, it's wrong for me to download games illegally, but you probably break the speed limit so shut up. I still win nyah nyah"
  7. I don't know why some of you think the NFL doesn't care, they care big time. Every year there's always a stink about them sending people to the hometowns of Super Bowl teams cracking down on IP violations, either in advertising or merchandising. They get ICE to seize counterfeit jerseys at ports and air terminals, and have shut down storefronts too. They just simply don't have the manpower to shut it all down.
  8. But this isn't true at all. It's super easy to spot these fakes. The numbers and letters really are that bad. You can spot them a mile away, especially for teams that have anything more than standard block fonts.
  9. Whose idea was it to put other teams' logos on it? Has that ever been done before in any sport?
  10. What are the new Penguin banners? I think I saw Hart Trophy and Art Ross Trophy, but what's the third? Hall of Fame with just Mario?
