It's possible that the equipment manager just used the numbers that were supposed to go on the road blue jerseys by accident for this photoshoot.

Never thought of it like that, that could very well be the reason. The equipment manager could have been sent the numbers from adidas with no clarification, and seeing the double outline he could have thought that it was the knicks changing uniforms and not the disingenuous outline-that's-the-same-color-as-the-jersey.

Back when the name was announced I was listening to it on the Fan 590 (a popular sports radio station here in Toronto), and they stated the winning entry was sent in by a little girl and that she was given a prize pack for her name being selected (i think it was something like season tickets and some jerseys and paraphernalia) . And I remember stating to my brother "So they listened to some kid for the team name". We all hated the name when it was announced.

As for in print there was an article that mentioned it in the Toronto Star and if I recall a blurb in Gamepro magazine under their "Entertainment News Section"

Here in Toronto? I thought you lived in the Pacific Ocean.

  3. None of the striping matched because they kept wearing monochrome when those uniforms were intended to be worn with contrasting pants. They only really wore them as intended in the first season. If worn as intended they would still have been bad, but probably not 'undisputed worst uniform in the NFL' terrible

While Milan is definitely wrong, I don't think Real Madrid is wrong at all. He was a huge part of that Galacticos team, and spent more than 4 years there.

  5. Since there continues to be talk of creating a European League that would replace the Champions League by having games played every week and creating a huge cash cow, I thought I'd attempt at making it feasible without completely destroying domestic play. The teams for the first league would be the top 2 teams in each of the top 4 leagues and the winners of the next 3 best leagues getting an automatic spot and the other 9 teams coming from the third and second place teams of those with automatic spots and the champions of the leagues that don't participating in a playoff. Counting the 2014/15 season as the last regular league, conceivably the super League would be something like this (just took the participants  based on the 2014/1 final Uefa League ranking

    European Football League

    Chelsea

    Manchester City

    Barcelona

    Real Madrid

    Juventus

    AS Roma

    Bayern Munich

    Wolfsburg

    PSG

    Benfica

    Zenit

    Borussia M'Gladbach

    Atletico Madrid

    Arsenal

    Porto

    Shaktar Donetsk

    KAA Gent

    PSV Eindhoven

    Galatasaray

    FC Basel

With no midweek European games, the travel would balance out. Season similar to current schedule, from mid-late august to early june  And when you get the initial league sorted you have 6 teams relegated back to their national league. A high number, but I feel that the constant renewal of the league would add an element of excitement  and if one of the bigger teams faces a difficult season like Chelsea being relegated wouldn't be impossible. From the promoted teams

1 spot would be given to the winner of the UEFA Cup

5 spots to the winners of the Champions tournament (so that the big 4 don't monopolize the promoted teams)

The Champions Tournament would be  held from   the week after the national leagues finish in mid-april to early june. Home and away knockout stages, quarterfinals winners are promoted while the losers of the quarterfinals get another chance by winning from those who lost. admittedly not perfect by any means, but it would be kind of like the European Cup of old with only champions participating and having it be just knockout stages. With the domestic leagues finished, they can easily play 10 or so games in 6 weeks

Even European League teams participate in domestic cups, which would significantly add to their value, becoming the best  chance at silverware for most European League teams.

UEFA Cup is contested between the champions who failed to get promoted to the European League and the second and third best teams. Would probably be more exciting than the current Europa League, since the reward for winning it is direct promotion to the European League. If a team wins both the Uefa Cup and the domestic League, the runner ups in the domestic league participate in the tournament.

Domestic leagues with a maximum of 18 teams participating so that there is enough time for the promotion tournament.

Since the European League seems inevitable, a format like this would be able to create a huge cash cow, while significantly improving the significance of the current Europa League and of domestic cups, as well as creating another event  in the promotion playoffs.

I find it more interesting that the left guys kit has the three stripes on it while Pele's kit has one thick stripe.

Probably because Pele was sponsored by Puma.

I'd bet that's why. It's also why Johan Cruyff wore only two stripes, rather than three, on his shirt and warm-up jacket during the 1974 World Cup:

By the way, the "other guy" in the Team USA jersey is West Ham legend Bobby Moore, who was then playing in the NASL. He and Pele are flanking Gerry Francis of QPR.

That image shows something which I really wish had caught on -- league all-star teams instead of national teams. A "Team USA" consisting of NASL players played against the English national team in 1976. I am a big fan of club football; but I dislike international football because it traffics in nationalism, which I despise. I do watch the World Cup and the Euros; and, because someone has to win, I root for England. But I don't feel good about these tournaments, as the flags make me ill.

On the other hand, if the teams participating were representing not countries but leagues, then I could fully get behind it. I'd rather watch a Premier League all-star team play a La Liga all-star team than watch England play Spain. The teams would of course consist of players of multiple nationalities; and these players would move from one league all-star team to another as they change leagues, just as baseball players move from the American League all-star team to the National League all-star team after they change leagues.

That would be the kind of World Cup that I would enjoy! There's be no minnows. Just sixteen all-star teams representing the best of the world's top leagues. In my fantasy scenario, there would be four groups, and each group would contain a team from one of the major powers:

    Premier League (England)

    La Liga (Spain)

    Serie A (Italy)

    Bundesliga (Germany)

Then the other twelve teams would be apportioned to groups at random. If it were done right now, those other twelve teams might be:

    Ligue 1 (France)

    Eredivisie (Netherlands)

    Brasileirão (Brazil)

    Liga MX (Mexico)

    MLS (U.S. / Canada)

    Primera División (Argentina)

    Primeira Liga (Portugal)

    Championship (Russia)

    Scottish Professional Football League

    Belgian Pro League

    J-League (Japan)

    Super League (Switzerland)

The four major powers would have permanent spots. Qualifying matches would be played in the years before my fantasy World Cup to see which other twelve teams qualify.

Alas, this will never be. But it is one of the first things that I would bring into being as King of All Sports.

There actually were some 'league all-star" games in the late 80's. They were frendlies and it just didn't catch on. Here's a pic of Maradona and Matthaus in the Serie A team

  7. My other opinion is NBA related, and I know this is gonna get me flak. But I don't understand the hate for this Magic set:

    47338845.JPG

The pinstripes set has too clunky of a font, as did the sublimated stars. And the set they have now has piping issues ala Calgary Flames.

I don't think there was any hate for this set, mostly just indifference. A 90's team in Orlando, Florida with a singular team name that's as silly as Magic should not be using block fonts and a subdued look. And this set was the latecomer to the block-fonts-with-double-double-outline-and side-panels bandwagon the NBA had from the late 90's to the early 00's. It looked like a NOLA hornets ripoff

the spurs could probably be included here too

  8. Usually the teams in the finals have great defenses. Teams giving up 3 goals a game are typically weeded out.

That, and finals of any kind in soccer are usually highly nervous, tactical encounters. And refs are usually reluctant to make calls that could swing a game and either call everything a foul or never draw cards (except for Argentina 90)
  9. Can be, but aren't always. Aren't the Brazil venues now lying vacant?

It'll be good to have the World Cup in the US, with all the new

Manaus and Brasilia were terrible locations for these kinds of stadiums. However, there was a need to renovate stadiums. Gremio and Palmeiras new stadiums weren't used at all
  10. World Cups will probably start being co-hosted. No one cares enough any more to bankrupt their country.

Except Russia & Qatar, who won't be asked back.

Honestly, the era of showcasing cities & countries via WC & Olympics is over. We get it, there are too few lands & cultures left unturned we don't already do business & tourism with yes?

Olympics definitely, but I think a country hosting a WC is still more than doable, since soccer stadiums in major cities are actually useful after an event
  11. Platini is worse than Blatter. He opposes the use of goal-line technology.

Yes, but at least he doesn't want players to die in the Qatari heat or completely :censored: the major leagues by hosting the World Cup in the middle of the summer.
Actually, Platini is one of the biggest supporters of the Qatar bid, while Sepp wanted to have the WC in the US.
    What.
Here's an article that cites it in passing, I couldn't find a better one

No Le Roi, please. Pretty much every reform UEFA did during his tenure has been a disaster.
