Shades of Kansas City in the late 70s/early 80s.

As a reminder, that didn't end well for everyone; my money is that even if the As move to Vegas, they are going to be relocating again in a couple of decades at the latest.

Need I remind you all that a goddamn indoor soccer team outdrew the Kings by a factor of 2 in the early 80’s? Kansas City has the college basketball hall of fame now. Failing at selling basketball here is like failing at selling football in Texas. Mahomes wants an NBA team here and unlike Vegas, we actually have an economy that isn’t based on one industry so maybe Round 2 will work out.

  2. After watching yesterday’s shameful display, I think the Chiefs need to go in a bold new direction. Steve Spagnoulo needs to be fired and replaced with an orangutan. Half the plays will be better than what Spags calls and the other half involves flinging feces at the zebras. No matter how you slice it, it’s an improvement. Reject Spagsanity, return to monke.

I'm curious to hear a neutral (more or less) opinion on this --

The Ravens decision to run a play with :03 left to keep their 100 yard rushing streak alive was:

    A.   An egregious affront to the principles of sportsmanship and the unwritten rules of the game; or

    B.   Simply part of playing until the end of the game (and if you don't like the decision, then stop them from picking up the necessary yardage)

Late, but B. This is a non-issue. Maybe don’t take the play off if it looks like they’re going to not going to take a knee.

These halftime shows seem a bit like SNL. People look back so fondly at a couple shows from the past that they refuse to acknowledge that anything since then is any good. Prince's performance is often labelled the best halftime show of all time, so I don't think much is going to top that, but that doesn't mean we won't get some other great performances.

It was pretty clear after the Janet Jackson incident that the producers decided to play it safe for a while by going with some conservative, classic rock musicians with a catalogue of hits that most people would be familiar with (McCartney, Springsteen, Tom Petty). Then they course corrected a bit too much, which is how we ended up with the Black Eyed Peas.

This seems like the best possible option. You've got a genre that has more relevance with younger audiences than rock does, but the focus is on the legends of that genre that'll be familiar to the older generation.

SNL has sucked ass since Chris Farley died. The wrong late night sketch show got cancelled IMO. RIP MadTV.

One of the most exciting players who was also a trash human being.

Uh, yeah, in a league where wealth, power and fame intersect along with the very rare human specimen that can play in the NFL, you’re going to have a lot of sociopathic pricks at every level. And no matter what anyone does to try and change that, it’s always going to be that way just donning a more socially acceptable face. Same goes for every industry/field where money, power and fame intersect.

I don’t know, I’m with Charles Barkley when it comes to athletes and being role models.

Jim Hughson retired just before the season. Wasn't expecting that. He really got on my nerves with his Vancouver homerism during the Blackhawks-Canucks rivalry, but he's certainly one of the great voices of hockey, and it'll be strange not to hear him.

EDIT: I think I pointed this out already, but the Gretzky hire is a reprise of Turner going out and grabbing Cal Ripken Jr. for their new baseball coverage. They pulled out all the stops hyping the presence of Cal Ripken Jr., who turned out to have not a single interesting thought.  They were fortunate to hit on the Shaq hire, but Shaq was a known commodity as a Personality, it was just a matter of whether he would jell with the crew, which he did. Gretzky borders on a known non-personality.

Its why I think if Antonio Brown can keep his stupid ass out of trouble, he might make a great commentator. I think Gronk or Travis Kelce would as well. Why? They’re interesting. Drew Brees right now is so bland I’m paying more attention to his suspiciously thickened hairline than I am to anything he’s saying.

I'd agree it's a little overblown. I think that the extent to which the Gawker house style has percolated through the rest of media has been a net negative, but I don't it's spread far and deep enough for us to pin too much blame on them just yet. Jia Tolentino is at the New Yorker and is more or less on her best behavior, for instance.

If anything, I would skip one level above Gawker and cast a critical eye to Something Awful, which not only -- in conjunction with private universities -- produced a lot of the Gawker writers, but also produced a lot of the Gawker-adjacent, if you will, media personalities who started Weird Left Twitter and now litter the podcasting and publishing scenes. Diminishing your adversaries by responding to their wordy screeds with "pee is stored in the balls" or "fill my hole, daddy" predates or is outside of Gawker, and if that's a problem with discourse, it's beyond that website.

Goons really are the scourge of the Internet. It was also the first site to host goatse so the site producing a bunch of huge gaping buttholes was only a matter of time.

  8. And even with the WNBA being the gold standard for women’s leagues, it still pales in comparison to what the NBA makes.  Doesn’t help that women’s sports is still ultimately a very niche market and that even most women understand the skills canyon that separates the WNBA and NBA. And because of the physical strength, speed and size gap between men and women that men dominate completely, I don’t think that canyon is going to close.
