NDSU is practically stuck in FCS. That average home game attendance requirement will keep them down there. There's not much they can do as far as adding more seats to the Fargo Dome.

Which reminds me. Were the Idaho Vandals grandfathered in to FBS? Because their max stadium capacity falls short of the home game attendance FCS teams need in order to move up. Including the fact that Idaho has been a sub-par program for a long time & being overtaken by Boise State as Idaho's top program, there is no way they've been selling out home games.

Yea I think they did not have the rule, when they moved up. Why have thus rule? It's dumb, cause it prevents smaller schools with the talent(NDSU) and with a few big wins against top programs from turning into be a Boise like story.

Don't blame the home game attendance requirement. NDSU plays in the NCAA Division I low-rent district known as the Summit League for Olympic sports. That's your bigger explanation for why they don't move up-they can't afford to.

Couldn't NDSU just move the football program into a FBS conference as a football only member? It's not like their trying to move the entire athletic department up from Division 2. Hell, I no the MAC allows the schools to be football only members. Not sure about the Mountain West though.

Hawaii says hello(though if they drop football like uab, the MW would not have any)

Off topic: does NDSU, SDSU and UND have baseball??

North Dakota State doesn't bring enough to the party in terms of TV money to even justify adding them to the MAC's comparatively compact footprint. UMass was closer to more of the conference anyway and is still getting kicked out for refusing to jump all the way into the league.

The Mountain West added Hawaii because it (used to) bring in some TV money and was a good way to further weaken the WAC. Hawaii also (IIRC) subsidizes some of the travel expenses-which is one of the reasons why their AD is dying. MWC would prefer everyone to be an all-sports member, though, and again, Fargo doesn't move the dial enough to justify the add. Fargo's also further away from any MWC town than it is from any MAC town, but that's a real minor concern.

All have baseball. NDSU and SDSU as part of their primary Summit League home, UND as an affiliate member of the island of misfit and forsaken ADs the WAC.

Dang, they truly are stuck. Seems like even if they were able to build a bigger stadium and maintain the attendance numbers needed to be promoted to FBS, finding a conference home may be not be easy. On top of that I can see FBS teams no longer scheduling the Bison for those week 1 money games. They better enjoy being the big fish in the small pond as long as they can.

Then what not join the valley full time? you said before the crown Jewel is baseball for the valley. Then use the conf to raise the profile and down the road boost football.

1. Men's basketball drives the ship in the Valley. Even with Creighton gone.

2. The Valley kind of has a delicate balance going between both its private and public members and its football and basketball members. Hence why private, basketball-playing Creighton was replaced by private, basketball-playing Loyola. Grabbing a public football school would have been a non-starter to Bradley, Evansville, Drake, and (probably) Wichita State.

3. NDSU allegedly made overtures to the MVC when it tried to replace Creighton. The reactions ranged from horror to "you have got to be kidding, right?" Again, trading Omaha for Fargo was seen as a losing proposition.

4. The Missouri Valley Football Conference is organizationally not part of the rest of the MVC. Which is good, because it has almost as many Summit League schools as it does MVC schools.

5. NDSU baseball probably isn't good enough to be a draw for the MVC-mired in mediocrity and facing a prolonged NCAA drought after last year's breakthrough since the return of one Oral Roberts to the Summit League.

EDIT: To clarify on football. The MVC does not "do" football and hasn't since football almost made the conference fall apart/had the league membership at the time trucking to Amarillo and Las Cruces for all sports.
