WJMorris3
(Instead of dates, I'm just going to use numbers from now on.)Since 1978, when Division I-A began, who has been the only team that, despite finishing the season as the only undefeated, untied team, did not finish as national champion in either the AP poll or the coaches' poll? I want a team and year.

WJMorris3
Again, not quite. Tennessee was also unbeaten and untied that year.Remember, they had to be the only unbeaten, untied team in the nation. They also had to not win the national title. WJMorris3
Very nice, JRod! Both Nebraska and West Virginia, who finished the regular season unbeaten as well, lost in their bowl games. Auburn finished fourth in the AP poll and didn't even crack the top 25 of the Coaches' poll.
