Minnakota first began as Chahinkapa Zoology Institute alongside the Chahinkapa Zoo in 1933. As the zoo was the first in all of North Dakota, they believed that it was their duty to both introduce and educate North Dakotans in all aspects of zoology. Until the 60s, both the zoo and the institute both operated on the same 18 acres until the zoo moved to their current location. In 1980, the zoology institute moved to the current day location as it attained university accreditation and the offered curriculum expanded to other life sciences. At this time, many new investors were brought in from both Wahpeton, ND and Brekenbridge, MN, leading to the name change to University of Minnakota to reflect the joint effort of the two sister cities across the state borders. In 2003, the school expanded its reach again to non-life science courses with select engineering and physical sciences programs, which is where the university stands today.
On the athletics front, Minnakota is relatively new, only starting competition in 2011 as a member of the Dakota Athletic Conference of the NAIA in football, basketball, and baseball. In 2012, they joined the AUIA’s Plains State Conference where they have seen moderate success in football with two conference titles and six postseason appearances.
The name of the Red Roos is rooted in two different fronts concerning both the history of the school along with its geographical location. Seeing as the early history of Minnakota was spent as a zoological institute, exotic animals have been a mainstay in the university’s history. Prior to the first football season, the teams were planned to be named the Reds, after the Red River that forms the eastern boundary of the campus. However, in the spring of 2011, the new football coach was introduced at a press conference at the Chahinkapa Zoo, where he also took a tour of as well as the university zoological college. While there, he made friends with an orphaned Red Kangaroo joey, leading to the football team adopting him as their team mascot. To commemorate their new mascot, the players laid down a thin layer of concrete along the pathway to their stadium entrance to have the joey walk along, leaving its footprints. In addition, the team also donned a silhouette of a kangaroo as their helmet decals for the entirety of their season. Today, the red kangaroo has been universally adopted by the athletic program, being called the Red Roos with the original joey being cemented in Minnakota history with both a bronze statue outside the stadium as well as a costumed mascot, named Minnie along with a male counterpart named Kota.
