Will's Trivia Question #12

The New York Yankees are leading the Boston Red Sox, 7-6, in the bottom of the ninth at Fenway Park.

With two outs, Mark Bellhorn is on third base, and Manny Ramirez is on first base.

David Ortiz pops up to the area between third baseman Alex Rodriguez and shortstop Derek Jeter. Jeter calls off Rodriguez, and instead of catching the ball in his glove, he catches the ball in his cap.

You are the umpire. Do you rule the game to be over? Why or why not?

LIVE BALL!

An illegaely caught ball occurs when a fielder catches a batted ball or thrown ball with anything other than the hand(s) or glove in its proper place. This includes the cather's mask.

In Little League play, a thrown gove at the ball results in an automatic triple.

Red Sox win the game, 8-7. David Ortiz gets a "triple".

Rule 7.05-b

Each runner, including the batter-runner, may advance 3 bases, if a fielder deliberately touches a fair ball with his cap, mask, or any part ofhis uniform detached from its proper place on his person.

Here's a situation that was never caught by anyone immediately:

Pudge Rodriguez catching, a pitch bounces off his chest and rolls a foot to his side. The ball stops rolling, Pudge reaches with his mask in his hand to roll the ball closer to him to thorw back to the pitcher. This is illegal, any runners should advance 2 bases.

I believe this was made a rule to keep players from throwing gloves at baseballs going past them... this rule was introduced in 1955 i believe along with a lot of new rules, including the balk, and forbidding players from leaving their gloves in the outfield when it was their turn to bat.

According to baseball-almanac.com, the no-leaving-equipment-on-the-field rule was 1953/54.

In 1974, Suspension for three days became mandatory if batter were to hit a fair ball with a filled, doctored or flat-surfaced bat.

The site also lists the chronological order of dates in which various rules were added or revised, too many to list here.

Good find! I bought a baseball preview book (i'm guessing it was for 1954 then) that talked about all the new rules, and the writer was complaining about the no-glove rule saying "It will tarnish baseball tradition forever".
