The San Diego Padres and Pittsburgh Pirates are locked in an epic struggle, with the Padres leading the Pirates 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth at PNC Park. With the bases loaded and two out, Jason Kendall hits a grand slam to seemingly win the game for Pittsburgh. Padres manager Bruce Bochy argues, however, that Kendall's bat has too much pine tar on it.

The umpire measures the bat against home plate, and finds that the pine tar extends the length of home plate plus another half an inch.

Does the home run stand, or is Kendall declared out?

Kendall is declared out for using illegal equipment. Technically, he is considered out before he reaches 1st, so the whole grand slam is wiped out. Padres win, 5-4.

rule 6.06-d

A batter is declared OUT if he uses or attempts to use a bat that, in the umpire's judgment, has been altered or tampered with....this includes bats that are covered with a substance such as parrafin, wax, etc.

No advancement on the bases will be allowed. Any outs made during the play shall stand. The player will also be ejected from the game.

I'm not sure when it was changed, but it's the exact situation that happened with Brett. It might have been changed years before then (was it 1983?), but Brett was punished according to the rule. He was declared out, the homerun did not count, the runs did not score, and Brett was ejected.

The umpires made the initial ruling, but MLB overruled the umpires... the homerun counted towards Brett's stats and the inning was replayed. The Royals won anyways.

I assumed too much. According to your situation, one half inch beyond the width of home plate would be 17 1/2 inches. A substance (pine tar) can extend no more than 18 inches from the handle. Within the legal limit (barely).

Home run stands, Pirates win 8-4.

Someone has to have a tape measure around to measure this one. Or hopefully the plate umpire's information card has a ruler printed on it.

The idea I was shooting for was that the bat was still legal. Though, really, the ump could do nothing about it.

Rule 1.10 reads as follows.

(a) The bat shall be a smooth, round stick not more than 2 3/4 inches in diameter at the thickest part and not more than 42 inches in length. The bat shall be one piece of solid wood. NOTE: No laminated or experimental bats shall be used in a professional game (either championship season or exhibition games) until the manufacturer has secured approval from the Rules Committee of his design and methods of manufacture. (B) Cupped Bats. An indentation in the end of the bat up to one inch in depth is permitted and may be no wider than two inches and no less than one inch in diameter. The indentation must be curved with no foreign substance added. © The bat handle, for not more than 18 inches from its end, may be covered or treated with any material or substance to improve the grip. Any such material or substance, which extends past the 18 inch limitation, shall cause the bat to be removed from the game. NOTE: If the umpire discovers that the bat does not conform to © above until a time during or after which the bat has been used in play, it shall not be grounds for declaring the batter out, or ejected from the game. (d) No colored bat may be used in a professional game unless approved by the Rules Committee.

BUCS WIN! WOOOOOOOHOO!!!

How sad is this? My team has been so bad for so long, I get excited when they win in hypothetical situations.
