yankeeman161
William Alfred Shea (1907-1991) who threatened Major League Baseball with the formation of the Continental League in 1959, which would have begun in 1961. The league never played a game after MLB agreed to expand to 16 teams, taking Houston, Minneapolis and New York (the Mets).Other Continental League teams eventually got MLB Franchises over the years. (Atlanta, Denver, Dallas-Ft. Worth & Toronto). Buffalo is the only city that did not get a major league team. For his contibutions in getting National League Baseball back to NYC, Shea's name was immortalized on the home of the Mets since 1964, Shea Stadium. That could all change if the Mets get a new stadium. THE TOUGHEST S.O.B. IN THE CCSLC!Satan Lives! tp49
Yep, Shea never owned the Mets their first owner was Joan Payson. The site Shea Stadium sits on was once offered to Walter O'Malley in the 1950's for the Dodgers but we all know how that went...
