He let the the the baseball people run the team in the mid 70's, the won 2 World Series. He got frustrated after '81 and took more of an active role. We all now how the 80's were for the Yankees. He got suspended in the early 90's and the team went back to the baseball people. They were able to rebuild from within by drafting and holding onto Bernie, Jeter, and Pettitte, and Rivera. As the young guys got to the majors the surrounded them with vets who were professional and team oriented. The brought in Boggs, O'Neil, Key, and Mattingly who was already there. When George came back the team was improving so we didn't get involved. After 95 Bob Watson came in as GM and put in the final pieces of the puzzle: Giradi, Tino, Nelson and Torre as manger. They went on to win 4 of the nest 5 World Series. In February of 98 Watson quit and Cashman, who is weak when it comes to Stienbrenner, was brought in. IMO, Cashman get way to much credit for the 3 straight championship teams. The team was already in place by the time Cashman became GM. After the Yankees lost in 2001 George took more of a role in the team and went out to sign trophies every off-season. Cashman got his first test of GM and has failed to bring in the type players the Yankees need. The biggest mistake as mentioned was letting Andy Pettitte go. That was all George he was never a fan of Pettitte. Pettitte was one of "Torre's Guys" and so George let him go. George had probably wanted to get rid of Torre for a few years now but hasn't because of 1. The backlash it would create and 2. The fear of him going to Boston, which would have happened up, until last October. Cujo Posted September 9, 2005 Share Posted September 9, 2005 The Yanks are 5-11 vs Tampa if they miss playoffs that is why . Well there is something for Tampa to be excited about.
