A *backwards* US flag?  You've got to be kidding me!!!

The American flag is always displayed with the canton (blue stars) facing forward when worn on an article of clothing. It's written into the US flag code. Similarly, passenger planes have the flag painted "backwards" on the right side of the fuselage (if you're sitting on the plane). Since this flag is on the right sleeve, the flag is so attached so that when the player faces forward, the canton is facing front.

Think of it as if the player were a flagpole, and the flag were attached as it normally would be to the pole - on the "left" or hoist end of the flag. As the player runs forward, the flag would trail behind him. Which would make the flag fly "backward". Try it yourself; hold a small flag in your right hand and start walking; as the flag trails behind you, the end closer to the flagpole is closer to your front than the part flapping behind you in the breeze.

US military uniforms are identical.

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.
