tater
He was always listed as a RB with the Chargers - and when he went to the Broncos he wore #33. I know he was a TE at A&M, but why did he wear a WR/TE number while playing running back for a number of years?
oddball
Because that was the number he was assigned as a TE probably as a rookie and just kept it. The position he was playing for the Chargers was the H Back, a combo running back / tight end position.
tjpskillz34
Correct. When he first entered the league, he was a TE.With the Chargers, they slowly began to move him into the backfield more and more. By the time the Broncos signed him, he was a full fledged RB, and therefore got #33... Please bring me some defense this offseason!!!
chakfu
Did Bernstine really play H-Back for the Chargers? I know later he played running back for them and not h-back; I don't think they ever had H-backs' run the ball, there were part fullback/tight end but all blocker. Did he play h-back at all during the transition from TE to RB?
heisman982102
Bernstine was drafted out of Texas A & M in the first round as a TE and that's why he was assigned 82. The Chargers, although they had other backs, like Marion Butts, converted him to RB and he kept the number.
