Seattle Mariners Custom Guitar

Alright, so I've been getting back into guitars recently and the creative side of me keeps taking over and wants to do these extravagant projects. Last summer, I painted a Seahawks Telecaster, which turned out great, just not good enough to clear coat, so I will be redoing it this summer to give it a professional finished look. After seeing one of my favorite bands, Seether, last week, I really liked the simplicity of the lead singers guitar, which is just a wine red Tele with a nautical star decal. I was thinking about doing a left handed replica of that, but the idea of doing something I'm big on, in the style his guitar sounded like a better idea. So basically I can include my favorite baseball team and one of my favorite artists into one project. I'm not exactly sure what the final product I'm going for is, just to closely resemble Shaun's guitar but have a Mariners feel to it. Using a virtual guitar maker, I've come up with these, one based on the Mariners current alt jersey (a deep, dark navy) and the other based on the Griffey era alt (using the limited colors available). Both would be stained color, so you can see the grain of the guitar. The pickguard will be exactly like the one pictured on Shaun's guitar, I'm just not sure about what color to use black or white or maybe a peraloid, but that is going to be expensive. And I'm debating between using the recolored trident logo (one of two versions, the one on the right done by NWTrailTrekker) or the current baseball/compass rose to replace the nautical star. How say you?

Wow, I really don't know why you feel that Hawks guitar isn't good enough to clear coat. Thats awesome!!

Thanks man. You cant see it in the picture, but the film I used to create the masking for the white areas left a residue that is hard to get off, plus for the binding I just used tape and made stripes and it didnt turn out as well as I had hoped. I think I'm going to go back and actually route out the sides and add real binding, since I have a few more guitars to do. And just for fun, heres a picture of the back of the Hawks guitar. I live in Seattle for school, and many of my favorite bands come from here, so I did the logos of 5 bands with Seattle roots, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters (Dave wrote the first CD here) Candlebox, and Alice in Chains.

Shaun's not playing a Fender is he?! That's gotta be a Schecter PT!

By the way, I'd go with teal stain for a maple fretboard; blue for rosewood. Use the compass logo for both. Nice work on the Seahawks axe, too.

What brand and model of guitars are you painting?

Sigs are for sissies.

Thanks man. Yeah, thats a Schecter PT, its just easier to describe it as a Fender since more people know their name/models. I like where you head is on the fretboard w/ the stain. It all depends what I'm able to get my hands on, I've found some lefty guitar bodies that are fairly cheap on ebay, so it all is resting on if and when I get one, as this is just going to be a beater.

Good deal. I was praying to God(or Allah, Shiva or whomever) that you weren't doing this with a thousand-dollar American Tele!

That being said, I've got a garage full(more like six or seven) of old beater guitars that I just got for spare parts at various yard sales and whatnot. I can't recall whether they've got all the hardware or not, but the necks and bodies are there. I've got a dozen or so acoustics lying around in there, too. If you're interested in paying for shipping, I wouldn't charge you a dime for some of 'em. Like I said, they're just collecting dust!

Edit: Damn! I think they're all right-handed guitars. Wouldn't really matter with the acoustics, though.

Oh don't worry, I wouldn't dream of doing that to anything too expensive. The Hawks guitar was an SX tele model that I got for just over $100 plus a few parts I needed. I'm leaning toward the rosewood fretboard, just because those are easier to come by and the SX models with the maple fret board all have the vintage yellow tint to them, which I'm not a big fan of. As for your offer, I'd be stoked to pick up some guitars from you. Let me know what you have (even right handed) and I'll let you know what I'm thinking. Thanks man.

So I think I have come to a final conclusion. I'm feeling the blue over the teal and going with the rosewood fretboard and most likely NWTTs recolorization of the old trident logo. I was able to get a fairly close mock up done, just couldn't get the wood grain to show through, so thats really the only difference. Now I play the waiting game for a cheap neck/body off ebay as this will really just be a beater guitar that I can lay around my place.

I just checked them out, and I've got four bodies and six necks, as far as electrics go. None of them, however, are styled like a Telecaster. Would that be a problem?

No, not at all. I'd be interested in just about anything. Its more the project that I enjoy and seeing what I can do depending on the body style. Let me know what kind of stuff you have. Thanks
