Tennessee Titans may wear Oilers throwbacks in 2009

IMO that's one of the worst looks to ever throw back to.

The pants have pretty prominent red stripes, while the helmet and socks have no red, and the jersey has only a tiny red outline around the numbers. The helmets just look bland, since the single-white stripe and white derrick are washed out against the sky-blue background. The whole thing is just a mess. The '90s Oilers had it right, and had a wonderfully-consistent set. That would be a much better look to go with (though I do understand that the significance of the 50th anniversary was a factor in selecting this set). Even the silver-helmet look would be better.

i think part of the reason i love throwbacks is because many of them are so imperfect, or ugly.

it's part of the charm. :)

Fair 'nuff.

i was hoping for the silver look :)

but i can definately live with the old original AFL look.

didn't we wear those jerseys before, as throwbacks? years ago, in the final years in houston? in 1994?

i swear i remember seeing pics of it. awesome font and everything.

i'm definately buying an oilers throwback :) i can't wait.

[edit]

found the pic from 1994.

these are the 1960 throwbacks... i love it.

Anyone else besides me notice two different Oilers sock styles being worn here? What's up with that?!

Honestly, i think Buffalo has an even worse sock problem.

Is it just me or do people in places like Houston and Cleveland need to get over it? You have teams now, move on. It's not like you're Winnipeg or Quebec.

It's you.

Maybe if they moved the Bucs, changed their name and took the identity and history with them, you'd better understand.

I agree. IMO the Cleveland deal should apply to any team that moves. They leave the colors, history, and unis in the original city.

Even though the Nordiques changed identities when they became the Avalanche, can you even begin to imagine how Nordiques fans felt when their team moved away and promptly won the Stanley Cup the very next season? Good grief. I could see the Saints going to L.A. or San Antonio and then winning the Super Bowl. Bitter wouldn't even begin to describe how that would feel.

On topic, if the point is to honor an AFL anniversary, I can see them wearing the first uni but the ones with the silver-blue helmet are the best Oilers set ever.

Let's not forget the move of the Milwaukee Braves which was, to my mind, the second really unforgiveable move (after the Brooklyn Dodgers). Milwaukee's attendance had faded a bit but that was mostly anger at the new ownership group (we could tell they were scum, as they eventually proved) and partially a loss of fringe attendance from the west who found it easier to get to Minnesota. Baseball officials, angry at the lawsuits that followed the move, tried to say Milwaukee was a bad baseball town. (See this year's attendance of over 3 million.) When the Brewers were moved in, a LOT of fans were still so bitter about the Braves that they refused to go for the first few years, until the Brewers made some conciliatory moves (ex-Brave Del Crandall as manager, the return of Hank Aaron for his final two seasons) and then success. I am sure that if you tap some of the older Milwaukee fandom (like me) you will still find some bitterness. A few years ago I happened to be in Atlanta during the Braves' playoff streak and bought a Braves division champs cap, a nice one; I was chewed out by an older friend for wearing something with a Braves logo.

End of rant.

It must make it even worse when the team moves to a place that's maybe more blase' than the original city was. I moved to the Atlanta area in 2001 and have been amazed at the fans here. How many MLB cities are there where tickets are available on game day for Divisional Playoffs and even the NLCS? That's ridiculous. Same with the Falcons. That year ('01) I went to the Saints-Falcons game in the Georgia Dome and there were literally more Saints fans than Falcons fans. The Falcons were booed during intros in their own stadium! Their offense would come up on 3rd-and-1 to chants of "DEEE-FENSE!" It was bizarre.

It's not ancient history either. A couple of years ago, the Falcons defeated the Steelers at the Georgia Dome and there were so many Pittsburgh faithful there that Falcons TE Alge Crumpler called it "our best road win in a while." :D
