Washington Bullets mis-matched numbers

Some of you may have spotted this on Uniwatch today. Back in the 1996 NBA preseason, the Bullets played at least one game where some players had different uni numbers. The only photos I can find are below:

Some players have the standard blue-on-white numbers, but a few have white-on-blue. This has been bugging me for 13 years, does anyone have any idea? AFAIK, this only happened in one game, and was the only time the Bullets used white numbers with this uni template...

I'm wondering if these where pre-season games. I know several diffrent leagues use diffrent uniforms for pre-season. Case in fact The Detroit Red Wings of the NHL do not use the vertical arches in the pre-season due to the cost. I also remember a pre-seaon game in Phoenix BCB (Before Charles Barkley) where several 76ers had nameplates and a slightly different number font for the players fighting for a roster spot.

That might be what the case was in that old Bullets game.

Even now, the Wizards use one layer tackle twill for player names as a temporary measure before the season starts (gold on the blue away jersey; blue on the white home, if memory serves). Once the season gets underway, they bust out their usual two-layer names.
