City of St. Albert unveils new logo

After a lengthy consultation process, the City of St. Albert (Alta.) has rolled out a new logo and slogan: "Cultivate Life." This is all part of a bigger brand for the city trying to draw tourists in based on its strengths in "botanic arts" (there are a lot of artists here, and a lot of gardeners/gardening businesses).

Old logo (usually seen in blue in colour applications):

I really like the old one, but I'm a sucker for that disco-era lettering. I think for mass appeal, the new one is clearly superior.

The two things that I find odd about it though are

1. the word "Alberta". It looks really tacked on there, because it's only over half of the open space. It should either fill the open space or not be there at all.

2. the period after St. I'm not sure that it really needs to be there at all, but maybe it could have been less bold?
