Not to diminish the severity of what has happened, it'll be interesting to see if Heatley is afforded the luxury generally given to other pro athletes, that of unnecessary leniency.

Ray Lewis is involved in a MURDER- not vehicular manslaughter or an accident, but murder- and goes, for all intents and purposes, scot free.

Or will he be the example?

Either way, it's a huge loss for hockey, the familiesa and the Thrashers. If Heatley DOES play again, chances are it won't be in an Atlanta uniform.

Leonard Little is having a Pro Bowl caliber season for the St. Louis Rams.  Lest we forget it was only a few year ago that he pled out to vehicular manslaughter charges for a drunk driving accident after his SUV slammed into a vehicle and killed the woman driving it.  My guess is that Heatley will have a chance to plead out to a conviction with a lenient sentence - house arrest or perhaps incarceration in a state hospital where he will be able to recover from his injuries and get some kind of alcohol counseling.  My guess is that in a year or two he will be a free man (although there will likely be probation).  The only issue that may complicate things is that he may not be able to play any games in Canada because the terms of probation may not allow him to leave the country.

As for the Ray Lewis deal, from all I have seen and heard on this, he was not involved at all except for being in the wrong place at the wrong time and associating with the wrong people.

In any event, it is a tragedy that an innocent young man has died and that Heatley lacked common sense and the proper guidance to know better than to do what he did.  The greater tragedy is that perhaps only a few people are going to learn a lesson from this and more people are going to die at the hands of drunk drivers and/or from knowingly driving at ridiculous speeds in improper places.

and here, we have one of the most important lessons all of us should keep in mind:

if you don't learn from history, you're doomed to repeat it
unfortunately, as we know, most people (probably a lot of us here) don't learn from history and wind up repeating it.
