  1. Portland State has the same problem as my school and many others like it... it's a relatively young school (founded after WWII) in a relatively large city where there isn't too much space for a new football stadium in general, let alone on campus.
  2. Wow... I never thought my opinion on anything would align so closely with oddball's, but I think he hit the nail on the head here. These conferences have cultural ties that go far beyond athletics and ought to be respected if they don't want their short-term gains to turn into long-term alienation of the fan base that allows them to make so much money in the first place.
  3. The font for "Milwaukee Brewing Co"
  4. There's no "official" minimum, but teams have to maintain an average of 15,000 fans at home games to jump to (and remain) in the FBS.
  5. This is a mistake, IMO... West Virginia fits in perfectly with the SEC both culturally and geographically. Anyway, I'm glad to see TCU going to the Big XII even if the invite comes about 16 years overdue. I'm all for them adding BYU and Boise to bring them back to 12.
  6. I dunno... soccer is as much of a sport for privileged suburban kids in America as hockey (unless you're Latino) and even if the majority of NHL clubs are based in America, most of its players are Canadian or European, so you'd expect it to get a pass on its perceived "monochromism." I'd expect that demographic to hate the shameless, stereotype-perpetuating marketing tool that is the NBA, if anything.
  7. Maybe it's because I come from a state where the epicenter of hockey culture is the self-proclaimed "Berkeley of the Midwest," but this "liberals hate hockey" thing is completely foreign to me too. Of all the things you'd expect liberals to critique about pro sports in general, it would seems a bit silly for them to single out hockey.
  8. Uhh, the NHL invented the "Artest"... EDIT: DAMN YOU LIGHTS OUT!!!
  9. I know I've seen this before, just can't put my finger on it.
  10. Oh God, it'd be the Grand Rapids Rampage all over again. *shudders* I don't see why that's necessarily a bad thing, the Rampage were always one of the better supported AFL franchises.
  11. As much as my disdain for Wisconsin stereotypes is part of my rep around here... I like my fries with cheese. I won't order this out of state though unless I know the place also serves nachos so I can specify "nacho cheese on the side." It's pretty embarrassing when your "cheese fries" come back with shredded cheese sprinkled on top.
  12. Well, the UP is pretty much nothing but a peninsula full of "hoser" stereotypes, but in America But you guys actually know what cheese curds are?! I worked concessions at Apline Valley one summer and must have spent a good 1/4th of my time on the clock explaining to customers from Illinois the concept of fried breaded nuggets of cheese.
  13. I agree, the only problem is that most of the markets by this description are in the Southeast and likely aren't interested in supporting a "yankee" sport (or anything but college football for that matter). That said... what about Grand Rapids? They'd obviously have to build a bigger arena, but they have a firmly entrenched fanbase for hockey (the Griffins are consistently in the top 5 for AHL attendance) and while the media market isn't huge, at #41 it's at least bigger than Buffalo and has that all-important "only game in town" factor going for them.
  14. That's a Quebecois thing? Around here (and I would assume Michigan too) that's considered "Yooper Style."
  15. I have no idea how feasible that would be, but I like it! It gives the NHL a chance to test-drive potential new markets and gives those cities a chance to prove how much they want an NHL franchise.
  16. Milwaukee's DMA is smaller than Pittsburgh's, but I think that's a bit deceptive because... unlike the Bucks... an NHL club could realistically expect to draw significant TV viewership (and on the weekends, attendance) from Madison and Green Bay/Appleton. As far as the economy, it's not exactly bustling, but it is quite stable (stable being a highly relative term by today's standards, of course). The rapid job loss that characterized Milwaukee in the 80s and 90s plateaued in the 2000s and there has been some small, but notable job growth in the healthcare and alternative energy industries. In fact, Milwaukee has quietly become a player in the former due to the presence of Aurora and Covenant. Now, Milwaukee/Wisconsin is definitely NOT a 4-sport market. Had we gotten an NHL team in the early 90s, the Bucks would likely have moved by now. But the fact that the Bucks, can still pull middle-of-the-road attendance with next to no community presence and as pathetic as they've been in recent memory is proof that this is indeed a 3-sport market. All that said, I think we can hold off on the NHL-to-Milwaukee speculation at least until the Senator announces he's looking for a buyer for the Bucks (which may happen soon since he's retiring next year).
  17. Geesh... if the Packers website didn't keep crashing my phone it might've saved me a couple posts
  18. There is 13 diamonds in the "G" that repersent all the championships http://www.packers.com/news-and-events/article_spofford/article-1/Ring-tells-story-of-10-and-time/15b2ff17-30a6-4b9c-a708-e561891ba9ec Ah... good stuff! Seems rather appropriate that they'd "hide" the reference to the 13 titles in the logo since the Packers pre-Super Bowl history is usually only promoted by them and not the league. I guess my only other critique is that there's no reference to the 3.5 road games they won to win the title. The inclusion of Lambeau almost seems ironic in that aspect.
  19. Pretty much what I expected... clever use of the Lombardis in the corners, but I would've preferred to see the 9 pre-Super Bowl championships represented somehow. Hopefully someone tweets pics of the sides soon.
  20. Since I couldn't get an answer in the original thread, could someone tell me what font was used on this concept? EDIT: Got another one...
  21. Go here: http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/marq/sports/m-baskbl/auto_pdf/2010-11_mediaguide.pdf Go to page 4. The 1977 ring is the 2nd from the left. Black and white pic, but better than nothing. Wow cool thanks!! I know two of the rings the 77 and the 03 final four, but what are the other 3? The second from the left is from the 2003 C-USA tournament. The other two have to be at least as recent as 2005 since they have the modern MU monogram on them, but I can't think of what they've done since then that would necessitate a ring.
  22. No, of course not. Am I the only one whose figured out that this guy is a troll?
  23. Would the Big East also jettison some of the basketball only schools in this scenario? I could see the Big East creating two "sub-conferences" out of their football and non-football members. The Big East Tournament would then just be a one-and-done version of the NBA Playoffs. And a big effin "yes" to La. Tech in C-USA. Of all the "out-of-footprint" placements, Tech in the WAC is probably the one that bugged me the most since they were already well within the footprint of two much more suitable conferences.
  24. I'm pretty sure the WAC will find a way to stay alive as a non-football conference like the Big West has. It's sad to see a conference with such history go out the way it has, but I can't feel bad for 'em. They did themselves in with the over-expansion that caused the creation of the Mountain West in the first place.
  25. I think that if Butler left for anywhere, it'd be the A-10. The last two Horizon defectors (LaSalle & Xavier) are there and it would mean exposure in large, east coast media markets. But that said, I think Butler is staying put for the foreseeable future. Anything they could prove in the MVC (or the A-10 for that matter) is something they already proved by making it to the championship game and Gonzaga and Memphis have already shown that you don't have to be in a major conference to be a contender on the national scene.
