It's right to me, this is how they looked when I started watching baseball in the early 2000s. I probably thought it was a BFBS uni back then, but the Mets colors came from the Dodgers (Blue, White) and Giants (Orange, Black) and it was the late 90s so I can't fault the Mets for jumping into a trend from that time

It was a BFBS uniform.  The Mets colors of Blue and Orange came from as you correctly stated the Dodgers and Giants.  The BFBS uniforms introduced in 1997 were introduced under a promotion with the movie Men In Black they called it "Mets In Black".  The black crown blue bill cap was originally a fashion cap first put out by Sports Specialties going back to the early 1990s.  I have every Mets media guide between 1996 and 2014 and black is never mentioned as an official team color, nor it's inspiration being from the Giants.  That black was a Giants color is coincidental to the cash grab the Wilpons were trying at the time.

Yes, absolutely. And I can say with confidence that there isn’t anyone here who feels that frustration more personally than I do. That bid falling apart sort of changed the course of my life in ways I’m still trying to bounce back from. The shenanigans that happened surrounding that entire thing are infuriating, but they were self created problems. Sac Republic got what it deserved, and I can say that because I was smack dab in the middle of the whole thing. So many people want to put the entirety of the blame on Ron Burkle while ignoring the bigger, more glaring problem, which is the current ownership group who allowed this whole mess to happen in the first place.

This is what you don’t seem to understand. I would love nothing more than for both of those things to come to fruition. But there’s a sad reality surrounding both issues that some people simply refuse to ignore. The reality is that both ownership groups are incapable of getting what they want/need in order to get their respective projects done. They’ve both been operating in bad faith with the hopes that someone else picks up the tab on their debts, and both are now realizing that isn’t going to happen.

You and I feel the same way about this when it comes to the Republic.  Then again we've talked about it enough over the years.  The other thing people forget about Burkle beyond what the current ownership did is that it was Meg Whitman before that.  I had the card with the stadium rendering from the street party (remember that) framed and it's on the wall in my office.  All that said I'll be in the stands on June 3 when they come here just as I was last September when they played in the Lamar Hunt Cup final.

As for Oakland, if the city leaders really wanted the A's there the stadium issues would have been resolved twenty years ago.  That they haven't, and in the meantime, new buildings went up in San Francisco (Chase Center), San Diego (Petco Park), Sacramento (G1C) and Los Angeles (BMO Stadium) tells me it's more about the City of Oakland than it does about anything else.

The Republic were drawing big crowds in the USL and played to almost full capacity for a good number of seasons now. It was also announced in 2019, Sacramento would be joining the MLS as the 29th team, but instead Charlotte got that spot.

No way should Vegas get the nod over Sacramento, who have been waiting for years.

Why did Charlotte jump Sacramento and get that spot again?  Sacramento's going to continue to wait for years over Las Vegas, and anywhere else a competent ownership group with the capital to run a team can be found.  As someone who's very closely followed the history of Sacramento's MLS bid I can safely say that's something they've never had, and at the rate they're going probably never will.

This is a rare case of a trade that I don't think is great for either side. The Canucks didn't get an extra shot at Bedard, got an intriguing prospect that seems like a major project, and got a serviceable winger who can maybe be flipped before he becomes a UFA next summer. Considering how much time is left before the deadline I'm surprised they wouldn't wait to see if any better offers came up.

The Islanders might not even make the playoffs with Horvat, and with most of their core near or past 30 they seem to be putting off the inevitable rebuild. The Canucks got Horvat's prime years at $5.5 mil, and if he does re-sign the Islanders are going to be paying him a higher salary for his declining years.

I actually think it's a good trade for the Islanders.  One of the biggest complaints is that they need to get someone who can mesh with Barzal.  The call was more for a winger but they need someone who can score goals.  I think Barzal shifting to the wing will end up better for him as he's not a very good face-off guy.  Even though Horvat was going to be a UFA had he not signed the extension. At the same time, he said the Islanders were in his "top 5" teams to consider, and given the Islanders' track record of signing UFA's (struck out on Gaudreau, Kadri, etc.,) it was far from a foregone conclusion Horvat would have landed on the Island over the summer.  This is essentially singing Horvat as a UFA.

I'm fine giving up Raty based on both the projections for him and what I've seen of him this season.  The 1st is where I have some concerns, but as it's at least lottery protected this year, if they don't make the playoffs it is what it is.  The other huge problem with the Islanders is the constant complaining among our fanbase that the player development aspect frankly is awful.  With the same people still running Bridgeport, I frankly don't have much faith in their ability to build through the draft until that changes.

Big move for both the Isles and Canucks today. While Bo is a great pickup for the Isles, giving up a prospect as good as Raty stings. Rumor has it the Isles already have an extension in place, something in the ballpark of $8.5x7.

Raty projects out as a 3d liner over the long haul and while he was the Isles best prospect that says more about how bad the farm system is than anything else.  Losing the 1st round pick is the bigger thing because the team hasn't had one in the last 4 years and this is supposedly a deep draft.  With all that, the Isles need someone who can score goals and Horvat fits.  Put Barzal on the wing, and hope he and Horvat have chemistry.  I've also herd there haven't been any negotiations on an extension but Lou...

  6. Drove up to the game tonight because even though I don't live in Sac anymore I've been a Republic fan since Day 1.  First, the Orlando fans couldn't have been a nicer bunch.

Second, to the Sacramento Republic, I am critical of ownership and the shenanigans surrounding the MLS bid.  But I give much credit to this scrappy little team.  I know they were crushed could see it after the final whistle. but hope they hold their heads high.  They left it all out there and more.  Would have been nice if USL did for Republic what MLS did for Orlando City and not had them play the other night so they could concentrate on this game.

Finally, to the TBB and other fans who made the trek down to Orlando for the game I had a great time at the pre-game meet up and march over to the stadium.  You represented your city and squad well.

I agree with @FiddySicks in seeing Republic playing in a game like that with the crowd as crazy as it was drags up bitter feelings of what could have been.

  7. I've been in a number of locker rooms and the main thing I've noticed about the NHL are the separate rooms for changing clothes versus getting all the equipment on.  The European football rooms have the same thing going on.  I'll have to look through my pictures and see what I have.

  8. With all the crap the Republic and their fans have dealt with over the last few years it's nice for the players, coaches and the fans who've stuck by them to see them make the US Open Cup Final.  This bunch is scrappy as hell and I couldn't be prouder of them and their resilience.

Just got some tickets and will take that horrible drive up I-4 to see them play in the final.  Can't wait.  Hope they win!

Going to my first Albuquerque Isotopes game Friday night.

    And it's beach towel night.

    Any tips?

    Better Call Saul...

Haven't been to an Isotopes game but have been to Albuquerque.  If you like dive type restaurants check out Frontier over on Central across from UNM.  Food's decent, and friendly on the wallet.  There are also a number of good places to eat on the surrounding blocks south of Central.  Christmas style is a thing too.  Great for the indecisive like me.  Trip up to Santa Fe is well worth it too.

I think Sacramento would be another great option if they can renovate the existing Triple-A stadium. Keeps them in Northern California too.

No.  Just no.  Sacramento has neither the will, the facilities, nor the corporate base to both attract and keep an MLB franchise. 2008 showed us what happens in Sacramento when the biggest business, aka, the state government can't pay the bills.

Lol, no. It absolutely would not. I was once also fooled into thinking this. Then I spent five years of my life working with the city’s last disaster of an attempt to get a top level professional sports team. Sacramento is 100% out.

If I could have liked this several times I would have.  1000% correct.

  11. Tampa looks plain gassed to me.  They've had two very deep playoff runs in years with short off-seasons beyond what a championship team would normally face.  They're also without the Gourde line which was so good for them the last couple years.  Speaking of the finals I wen to the watch party at Amalie last night and noticed that there was no Stanley Cup Finals logo anywhere on the ice as in years/decades past.  Didn't see one on the ice in Denver either.  Is this a new thing?

In some embarrassing north of the border news, Roger Lajoie has resigned as the Director of Marketing for the Senators. He was essentially a part-time executive, as he also maintained his job as a Toronto radio host. He was one of Melnyk's buddies who clearly got gifted the position. He came under fire from the fanbase & some members of the media when he posted this (now deleted) tweet over the weekend.

    He's not wrong though...
