A tale of two Stefan Nilssons

In the 12th round of the 1988 NHL entry draft, the Vancouver Canucks drafted 20-year-old Swedish forward Stefan Nilsson. This came as a surprise to the Calgary Flames because earlier that day — in the seventh round of the 1988 NHL entry draft — they also had drafted 20-year-old Swedish forward Stefan Nilsson.

When the Flames demanded an explanation from the league, they were informed that there were actually two 20-year-old Swedish forward Stefan Nilssons in that year’s draft. The Flames, according to the possibly apocryphal story that has made the rounds ever since, had accidentally picked the wrong one. They wanted this guy.

I swear to you, something very close to this happened in my office several years back.

  2. The other difference is that the Hurricanes don't have a large, dormant fanbase waiting for signs that the franchise is finally willing to pull itself out of the depths. Outside of maybe a season and a half's worth of bump around the Cup win 12 years ago, this is what they've got.

I also remember reading around the time of the sale that, unlike pretty much every other Southern expansion team, Peter Karmanos never put any effort into "grow the game" efforts like building youth leagues and rinks. So there's no forthcoming generation in the Triangle with increased interest in hockey, unless the Hurricanes magically become consistently top-tier.

Long story short :censored: Pete Karmanos sideways with a rake.

  3. 7 hours ago, the admiral said:

Oddly enough, the Blackhawks were at a low point similar to the one the Hurricanes are in now when they abandoned their simulcast, getting rid of Pat Foley on both TV and radio.

Also worth noting that, at this time, the Blackhawks were buying airtime to get their games on the radio, and were being labeled the worst-run franchise in North American pro sports. So, uh, congratulations, Carolina!

  4. I thought Assistant Captain Hobby Lobbyist and Mike Ribeiro took care of that on their own, but you do you.

Glen Sather doing the internal rich-guy chuckle as he says he can think of two or three million reasons not to study players' mental health is some bad screenplay isht.

I'd like to be surprised about Mario Lemieux, but didn't he once claim he slept through his teammate violently raping a woman in their room?

  5. Yeah, Edwards wanted a free billion dollars from the city for all of his sports toys, and when the mayor had the sense to tell him to go screw, he brought in the NHL to try to influence the mayoral election. Murray was stacking Ls all season long on and off the ice.

If Murray Edwards thinks he can do better with one team in Houston than he can with four teams in Calgary, I advise him to go ahead and try his luck.
