  1. "At this point it is unclear whether the Texas-based Pacific Division teams... will play a 68-game or a 76-game schedule." They've really thought this through!

Bonus: Dave Andrews salts the earth in Manchester as they play in the Calder Cup Finals.

EDIT: The post has been amended to say, definitively, that the Special Snowflakes will play 68 games, and Texas & San Antonio will play 76. Good :censored: ing luck.

  2. Jon Rosen (@lakingsinsider) spoke to Dave Andrews last night while covering the Manchester Monarchs. The commissioner confirms the "California teams" will only play 68 games next season, while the rest of the league plays 76.

Lessened CA AHL schedule had been reported for a while. Why? Travel costs, desire to nurture better play with fewer 3-in-3s had been cited.

    ...excuse me for a second.

    *steps outside*

    *deep breath*

YOU CUT TRAVEL COSTS ALREADY BY MOVING A SIXTH OF THE LEAGUE TO THE COASTAL OPPOSITE OF ITS INTENDED GEOGRAPHIC FOOTPRINT, YOU TURDLINGERS. YOU DON'T GET TO CRAP ALL OVER LEAGUE STRUCTURE BECAUSE YOU WANT TO BE EVEN CHEAPER. IF YOU DIDN'T WANT AHL EXPENSES, MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE BOUGHT AN AHL TEAM. GO PISS UP A ROPE AND MAKE YOUR OWN LEAGUE ALREADY.

  3. The dynamic here is fascinating. Glendale's obviously Hooterville through and through, but there was a story a few weeks back about the council members being right pissed at the Coyotes, because the team wouldn't provide any paperwork showing Andrew Barroway had actually become the majority owner, and Barroway said he'd only meet with the Glendalers if they flew to New York to see him, at which point he'd grant them 30 minutes of his time.

Basically, the Coyotes bullied their gravy train operators so badly, that the councilmen got angry enough to do something marginally approaching competency. They actually had no choice but to do something in the best interests of their citizens, finally. And now it's the Coyotes' turn to be angry and scared. This thing's gonna get a whole lot dumber before anything gets close to being resolved, and I can't wait.

  4. To address the specter of a new arena shared by the Coyotes and the Suns, I'm going to raise one question BTW:

Is it actually in the Suns' (or ASU's, if they get involved) financial interest to bring in the Coyotes? Assuming they're running the arena, they might be leaving money on the table by having a hockey team chew up 40+ nights that could be used for more lucrative concerts and other events. I mean, the Kansas City and Houston experiences might be relevant here.

Exactly. Plus, an arena can than host both sports properly will have inferior seats on the baselines for basketball.

I still don't see what's wrong with Talking Stick Arena that it can't last 15-20 more years with upgrades. It was designed much better than the late 80s arenas like Bradley Center.

Talking Stick has the same problem Barclays in Brooklyn will - lots of seats that should be in your priciest level from which you can't see the full ice surface.

And Bradley Center was designed as a hockey-first arena, so, bad example.

  5. Hahaha, I was just coming here to post this. I love that the first comment on the story is "Here we go again...". And every time I think the Coyotes' saga can't get any more ridiculous, by God, they prove me wrong. Funneling the Glendale Hockey Welfare money inappropriately? Losing *more* than the $35 million IceArizona said they did? The new majority owner unwilling to offer any proof he owns the team? This series holds up better over multiple sequels than the "Fast & Furious" franchise. It's the feel-good hit of the offseason!

  6. For maximum hilarity, I'm hoping the Texas teams play the full schedule, so that standings in the other three divisions will be normal, but in the Special Snowflake Division, standings will be determined by points percentage. Most likely, though, it'll be 68 games for the Stars and Rampage, too, and the playoffs will be top 4 in each division, no crossovers.
