It's been a busy day on TwiX. I'm a little perplexed if the reports of only an 8-team league are true. Unless it's only for 2024 and others returning in 2025. I prefer a start date immediately following the Super Bowl, at least until the league can really establish itself, but I guess March 30th is better than mid-April.

I am always in favour of independent leagues. So my first reaction was: good for this team for starting up.

But a home run derby to decide games is absolutely embarrassing. Indeed, I thought that the post mentioning that was a joke mocking the league.  To know that this is really the rule is nothing short of shocking. How any baseball fan could approve of this is far, far beyond my understanding.

I'm not fundamentally against alterations of the rules, even radical ones. But this is bad. If they wanted to take something good from soccer, then they should have borrowed the acknowledgement that a draw is a legitimate result. A regular-season game tied after nine innings should go into the books as a draw; save the extra innings for playoff games that have to have a winner.

This is a case where the flaw is so big that it overshadows everything else. Very disappointing.

It's Independent League ball. They need something interesting to draw in an audience. I'm sure they can live with your disapproval.

Oregon has a great chance of getting in because they're going to be Pac 12 champions with their only loss to the 1-loss Huskies.

Oregon's only real hope is that they beat Washington and then Alabama, Texas and Florida State all lose. If they lose to Washington again, then I'd say they'd have the best chance to become the first 2-loss team to make it, but the odds are still stacked against them as a 1-loss Ohio State is probably considered more appealing. Plus so much else would have to happen for that to even come into play.

Why can't MLS get more well known companies for sponsorships? I understand it for less popular teams in smaller markets but LAFC, Galaxy, Seattle, Atlanta, and Miami are premier teams and all have not very well known or just weird sponsors.

Only teams I can think of with well known sponsors are:

Charlotte - Ally (at least for me)

    Austin - Yeti

Toronto - BMO (big in Canada I guess)

    Minnesota - Target

NYC teams - Kind of? But they are owned by them so not as cool

    Never heard of Purina?

  5. I'm new to MLS, but St. Louis had like a 2-&-a-half week break between their final two regular season games. Then you have these breaks in the playoffs. Is there any rhyme or reason to this scheduling? Why not just be consistent with each weekend (& occasional Wednesday). MLS Cup would've happened by now.

with as spread out and sparce as most of the TX / southwest metro areas are, IDK if Dallas has two "centers" of population that are spread enough for two teams, or if it's more like one giant (area wise) metro area, in which case I don't think it'd make sense.

Two solid population bases that are dense enough yet separate enough could be conditions for two teams, a single large-but-dense base also could work, and maybe a couple of other relatively-odd cases.

But it's moot, because existing teams wouldn't allow it.

What's the last place that actually tried?  Toronto with the Legends (I think?) and how did the Leafs react to that?

Technically, Los Angeles. Rams returned in 2016 with the Chargers arriving in 2017.

Oregon and Oregon State are in discussions about keeping the rivalry alive. Nothing is finalized yet but at the very least there are talks about scheduling a game between the two next year. Oregon will have to agree to a buyout with one of their already-scheduled non-conference opponents in 2024, or agree with one of those schools to move games to future seasons.

That's impossible because Oregon is gonna be in the Big Ten and need to put all of their focus on those schools.

    (/sarcasm.👍)

I do not think you understand the idea these teams work or how they schedule games. Oh wait, I can see why you understand since you are East Missouri which means you had to cry in the corner when the Cardinals and Rams moved (in case of the Rams, moved back to L.A. and in case of the Cardinals, got the heck out of dodge before it got worse and moved to the desert).

WTF are you talking about? Are you seriously that insecure or just so full of yourself that you can't handle anyone bringing up a counterpoint to your opinion? Teams play non-conference games. Washington-Wazzu are in the EXACT same situation as Oregon-Oregon State and yet they ARE continuing their game, so it's nowhere near out of the realm of possibility that they could continue as well, at least until the schools involved say otherwise. If you were the college football expert you seem to believe you are, you would get that and wouldn't make some smug, nonsensical comment that has nothing to do with the topic at hand, because you would have something of value and relevance to say. You have just lost any credibility you may have had because you have set yourself up as someone you is incapable of having a rational conversation that involves differing opinions than yours.

Reason why I said that was because Texas A&M moved to the SEC and only played University of Texas once. So to be honest, Oregon State will be without Oregon because the main focus of Oregon, Washington, UCLA, and USC is that they will be more focused or in tuned to the Big 10 teams and would only play Oregon State once, Texas will renew their Texas A&M rivalry once they go into the SEC with Oklahoma and two other teams joining them.

But my point was Washington and Washington State ARE continuing to play, so there's no guarantee, until they announce for certain, that Oregon and Oregon State won't continue to play. At this point, at least. And playing other Big 10 teams would have no effect on Oregon playing Oregon State. They'll still play non-conference games, so if both are interested in continuing the series, they can do so. Just like Washington and Washington State.

Sadly, this will be their final meeting. 😢

Have they announced they won't continue playing? If not, then there's no guarantee it will be the final game. Washington and Wazzu have already announced a continuation through at least 2028, I believe.

My brain skipped over that first Louisville loss, but committee practice in the past has not put a 2 loss team in. Penn State was the best 2 loss team not put in. I can't see a two loss Alabama ahead of the Buckeyes, who would have been expected to win the Big Ten if they beat Michigan. Bama was lucky to survive Auburn who decided to rush two and spy a LB instead of sending him too. Texas would drop too, because of Oklahoma State's position in the rankings but I'm expecting a bump for them this week as well.

Oregon has the best shot at being a 2-loss team to get in, as both would have come to undefeated, playoff team Washington. But I think Texas, Alabama and Florida State would all have to lose next week. It would probably, then, come down to them and Ohio State for the final spot. Honestly, objectively speaking, either team would have a legitimate claim for it.

Ohio State isn't getting back in because the weird amount of things that would have to happen, possibly even including Iowa beating Michigan in the Big Ten Championship, just aren't going to happen. Georgia winning would help, but I think Alabama will knock them off. Just a feeling, but I hope that's not the case. Florida State is unlikely to lose to Louisville, but if they do Louisville has a championship that should weigh more over Ohio State.

Louisville lost to Pitt and Kentucky. Winning the ACC won't change anything. They're out. If Washington loses to Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship, they're still ahead of Ohio State, IMO. One could argue the same for 2-loss Alabama and Texas, although that's far from a slam dunk.

So I suppose it's going to annoy the hell out of everyone if a bunch of chaos happens again, and Ohio State sneaks back in?

(Washington gives Oregon a 2nd loss, Georgia gives Alabama a second loss, two loss Oklahoma beats Texas again,  and Florida State loses... who else could it be?)

They may take a 2-loss Oregon or Texas since their second losses would have come in the conference championship. Especially for Oregon since both of their losses would've come to playoff Washington.

So, the mighty Green Wave is one win away from back-to-back New Year's Six games!

When Oregon State and Washington State start rebuilding the Pac-12, I hope Tulane has a place near the top of their wishlist.

Why would Tulane want to go from one Group of 5 conference to another? There's been interest in the past from the Big 12 and I could see the ACC wanting to get in New Orleans as well, so I can't see them making a lateral move when they can potentially move up. The Pac-# is not going to be a power conference again. Not happening. Adding Washington State and Oregon State to a bunch of G5 schools will not change that. Any school, like Tulane, San Diego State or Memphis, for example, would NOT join another G5 without some assurance that they can leave at anytime for a power conference. And all are potential power conference expansion candidates.

I don't know if this has been brought up, but it is interesting that the Diamondbacks chose to recolor their original D-Snake logo rather that use the updated version that came out during their last brand re-design:

    THIS ('99-'06 alternate logo):

    vs.

THIS ('06 to present alternate logo):

(Oop! Shout out to @FiddySicks for bring it up)

The "new" D-Snake for 2024 doesn't have the drop shadow from the original, only an outline.

I love this.  They should remain a conference of two for this specific reason.  Then whenever it eventually dies and they join another one, they can refer to it as Makaveli.

NCAA rules set a 6-team minimum for conferences. Although they are given a 2-year grace period, so they could stay a 2-team conference for the next couple years. However, they won't have Power status and the CFP has already been proactive to set an 8-team minimum to eligible for one of the conference champions spots and to go from the top 6 conference champions + 6 highest ranked teams to 5 and 7.

I just saw this for the first time.  Wow - they killed it.  While I don't necessarily love the marks they chose for the jerseys and hats, they're in line with the aesthetic of MiLB.

The logos and overall identity - outstanding.  Just outstanding.  The penguin with toga and laurel?  Brilliant.  Hell - just going with an emperor penguin was brilliant.  The "column R", while it may have scaling issues, is fantastic.  Love this.

Any one know if it's a Bosack?  Guessing Joe or Simon.  Too good to be some of the other big players.

I'm going to dissent and say that Charissa Thompson is in big trouble for this, not for what she said but where she said it. She delegitimized journalists while guesting on Barstool. She will be punished for that. Even if she keeps her job, she will become a pariah in her professional circles.

Well, confirmed what we already knew, at least.
