The funny thing is that it feels like the outcome wouldn't have been any different in LA. The Chargers don't have a home field advantage, and the Jags seem to only play well when they're out of options.

And anyone who says Lawrence isn't a great QB, my counterpoint is: check out that hair.

He played about as awful as any QB could in that first half, but man, he sure rebounded in the 2nd half. The whole team did really, but they don't make the comeback without Lawrence playing the way he did in that 2nd half.

Completely unrelated to today's Gamez, but in light of the whole Lamar Jackson soap opera, I want people to remember this when they get to criticizing the aforementioned Jackson, Trevor Lawrence (up until London happened), Justin Fields or whatever other young/rookie Q "they" wanna hype up next: can't do 💩 if you ain't got 💩 around you. (Or in front of you). On the other hand, what Mr. Irrelevant is showing (and several other journeyman backup stopgap in times past) is that you don't have to be a world-beater; just be good enough to not lose the game, get the ball to your playmakers (provided the guy even has playmakers to begin with), get good protection to throw behind, and a decent defense to protect your points, and that'll solve half the issue right there.

Agreed 100%. I feel like people don't always remember this. The talent level difference in the NFL is really small, almost negligible for the majority of the players, but basically every single player needs to be in the right situation, with the right coaches, with the right surrounding players and the right scheme around them to maximize their potential. This is especially true for QB's.

I don’t think it matters.  But do you think they’re up by four touchdowns because Purdy sucks?

No, it's because the 49ers as a whole have an outstanding team and coaching staff. I originally stated Purdy is the reason why they won't win the Super Bowl. I'm extremely envious of Kyle Shananhan's ability to scheme his top players open, so open that a 7th rd rookie QB can have success. So I don't see where I was wrong with my original statement.

Here’s the thing, though. He’s not been a world beater, but he’s kept his composure, which is something you really haven’t been able to say about a 49ers QB in crunch time in ages. Kaepernick is probably the closest, and his situation was a bit different. Absolutely no chance Jimmy G would’ve done that IMO. He would’ve hucked up a few ducks for picks and that probably would’ve been it.

See, I agree with this. His composure has been good. He's been able to get through his reads and make the correct throw. This is why, IMO, the offense is better with Purdy than it is with Bonky G. He keeps the offense in check, and more often than not, makes the right decision for the offense. Bonky G, for whatever reason, would be doing what Purdy is doing now but then out of nowhere decide he's Mahomes and try to force a throw that he had no business throwing, or get so fixed on this primary read he'd throw it regardless if it was the right decision. Helps too that Purdy is more athletic than Bonky G.

He's thrown a few ducks tho and a few passes that should have been picks. Seattle wasn't good enough to capitalize, but will he get away with those throws against a Cowboys or Eagles defense who were the top 2 teams in creating turnovers? Or the Bills in the Super Bowl? I think San Francisco is talented enough to reach the Super Bowl, which is why I picked them, but I'm just pushing back against this notion that he's the reason why the 49ers won this game (not so much here though, I've heard this moreso elsewhere).

  4. I understand that was Purdy's first ever drive in the playoffs, but that whole series showed why he's going to be the reason that the 49ers don't win a championship this season. That should have been a pick-6 at the end of it.

The knock on him coming out of college was that he had basically no arm talent and that was evident on that drive. What's going to happen when San Francisco finally plays a team that has a defense capable of slowing down that potent running game? When a defense is good enough to force Purdy to make plays downfield?

I think people trying to say he'll be the starter next year are getting a little too caught up in the moment. A healthy Trey Lance would make this Niners team the runaway favorites, IMO.

When was the last time the Cowboys made it past the 1st round?

Not to be that guy, but the Cowboys have routinely make it past the 1st round in their playoff appearances this century. It's getting to the championship game where they've had their issues.

Last year's wild card loss was the first time in 15 years that the Cowboys failed to get to at least the divisional round in their limited playoff appearances. I know it's semantics, but words matter.

As much as I don't want to admit it; Jerry isn't firing McCarthy. Unless he can somehow get Payton, whom I doubt wants to be under his thumb.

However, if Dallas has a complete offensive blackout against a moribund defense; I see Moore being handed his walking papers instead.

Agreed. Only way McCarthy gets fired is if the Cowboys lay an absolute egg like they did against Washington. Something like 30-3. I think Payton is too expensive for the Cowboys, in terms of compensation the Saints would want back.

Assuming the Cowboys don’t make a deep playoff run, I wouldn’t mind moving on from both Kellen and DQ. Get someone like Fangio as the DC to truly unlock Parsons and the rest of the defense. And if the offense lays an egg in the playoffs again, I fully expect Kellen to be gone.

This is out of left field and I’d put money on it not happening, but if the Cowboys don’t make a deep playoff run and decide to move on from McCarthy, I’d love for them to take a look at DeMeco Ryans as a potential replacement. He’s about to be a head coach somewhere within the next year or two. He’s an outstanding DC and clearly has the 49ers defense playing up to their full potential.

  7. Just like I pointed out last year, point differential can be a useful tool to determine the quality of a team, but it has its limitations. Last year, I predicted that one of these 6 teams would win the Super Bowl: Buffalo, New England, Kansas City, Dallas, Tampa Bay and the Los Angeles Rams (and of course, saying that 6 of the 14 teams remaining will win the Super Bowl isn't all that impressive at all; it's literally almost half the playoff teams). Of the top 3 in each conference in PD last season, only the Chiefs and Rams made it to Championship Weekend with the Rams being the eventual champion, thus continuing the streak.

This year we've had one of the craziest point differential vs. record differences we've ever seen. Of course this is referring to this year's Minnesota Vikings who are the first 13+ win team to ever finish the year with a negative point differential. Tampa Bay somehow finished last in their division in PD, but still won the division. The NFC as a whole is rather top heavy in PD. Only 4 of the playoff teams in the conference finished with a positive PD and the Seahawks are 4th with +6. The 49ers, Eagles and Cowboys all had a positive PD in the 100's.

The AFC only had 2 teams who crossed the triple digit threshold in positive PD, but 6 of their playoff teams had a positive PD with Miami being the lone playoff team with a negative PD. Led by the Bills, Chiefs and Bengals. Interestingly, in both conferences, the 1 seeds finished 2nd in conference PD and the 2 seeds finished 1st in conference PD.

So it's not exactly going out on a limb by saying that if an AFC team wins the Super Bowl, it'll be either Buffalo, Kansas City or Cincinnati and if a NFC team wins the Super Bowl it'll be San Francisco, Philadelphia or Dallas. What a prediction, saying that one of the 6 best teams in the league will end up lifting the Lombardi.

Here's my playoff predictions (more for me to come back and see how wrong I was):

    Wild-Card Weekend

    San Francisco 34, Seattle 20

    New York 24, Minnesota 23

    Dallas 23, Tampa Bay 20

    Buffalo 35, Miami 13

    Cincinnati 27, Baltimore 23

    Los Angeles 30, Jacksonville 27

    Divisional Round

    Philadelphia 26, New York 23

    San Francisco 23, Dallas 20

    Buffalo 27, Cincinnati 21

Kansas City 31, Los Angeles 27

    Conference Championships

    San Francisco 30, Philadelphia 13

    Buffalo 41, Kansas City 37

    Super Bowl LVII

    Buffalo 27, San Francisco 20

  8. The Cowboys sure picked a great time to play their worst game of the season. They were atrocious today. Hopefully they got that mess out of their system. Last year they played their starters in the meaningless Week 18 game and blew the living crap out of Philly, only to lay an egg the next week against San Fran.

Maybe this time by laying the egg early, they can actually play to their potential in the postseason.

The Eagles are up against the Giants B-team. The Cowboys, as they should, are playing not to get hurt.

If they were playing not to get hurt, they should be resting players then. And the Cowboys won’t know the score of the Philly game until halftime.

I might be a Cowboys homer, but I can call a spade a spade. No excuses for this awful performance. They are just playing bad, bad football today.

  10. Cowboys have an opportunity, albeit a highly unlikely opportunity, to win the division and the 1 seed today so what do they do?

Play their worst 1st quarter of the season. Several uncommon miscues, and some of the mistakes they’re making are ones they haven’t made all season. I guess it’s better to get these out of their system now rather than next week against Tampa? But it doesn’t give anyone a ton of confidence in this team going forward.

Trevor Lawrence is not a franchise QB and if a true franchise QB is available in the draft, they shouldn't be too proud to grab him and move on.  Trevor Lawrence will never be the reason a team makes it to the conference championship game, let alone a super bowl.  He's simply not better than above average at the NFL level.

    That's a bold statement.

He's a massive reason as to why the Jaguars have made this run to the postseason, in what is essentially his true rookie season (or at least his first with a legitimate NFL coaching staff). His jump from last year, to this year and more specifically, the latter part of the season, showed exactly why Jacksonville made him the number 1 overall pick last season (and why teams were tanking to draft him).

This Jaguars team isn't amazing, but they're in the postseason, after starting 2-6. The team is going to get better. He's going to get better and he's already been playing like an elite QB on this 7-2 run the Jaguars are on. Once his pre-snap ability catches up to his generational talent (and I don't say that lightly), he's going to be on that Mt. Rushmore of the current top QB's. He didn't play amazing tonight, and missed a wide open TD, but he's been outstanding this last month.

As a fan of a NFC team, I'm quite relieved that all of the current and next crop of great QB's are in the AFC. Imagine Trevor Lawrence on the 49ers. They'd be in the next 5 Super Bowls.

  12. I'm no medical professional, so take this with a grain of salt, but from what my sister and cousins have explained to me (who are nurses, and my sister was specifically an ER nurse) is that critical essentially means their vital signs are unstable and the doctors are unsure of what the outcome will be for that patient.

Also, the terms they report to the public such as critical, serious and stable are meant to be vague in order to protect the privacy of the family.

EDIT: I need to clarify as well that the precise meaning of the conditions do vary from each hospital

  13. Will never give the benefit of the doubt to a man who basically pioneered and popularized being a sports troll. I’ll never forgive him for trying to say Dak Prescott was weak for openly talking about his depression and anxiety he had months after his brother committed suicide.

Skip Bayless is a disgusting human being and deserves no benefit of the doubt.
