  1. Well, back then the rings were supposed to be, you know, worn. All day, every day. Now they're just nicknacks, statues to be placed on a shelf, preferably with a pin spot on them at all times.

I wouldn't go as far as to say their nicknacks, but their definitely no longer for everyday wear considering how big they are. I always found that funny how the players want these huge rings...but then complain that their bulky and uncomfortable to wear. i had a chance to talk to Charles Woodson once and he wasn't wearing is ring so I asked why. he said because it's so big and heavy (remember it's made of Platinum) it would create a calis on the inside of his other fingers so he just wore it on special events.

  2. it always amazes me that the rings that were actually stolen were left just lying around in the players house. You make millions invest in a safe for goodness sake!

Jerry Krammer left his super bowl I ring in the bathroom on an airplane. He took it off to wash his hands. He recovered the ring many years later when the ring was in an auction. The consigner was a lawyer and was not willing to cooperate so finally, the auction house settled the matter. Jerry got his original ring back and auctioned off the replacement ring and the money went to charity.

I believe another super bowl ring was returned to the original owner after he too, took the ring off to wash his hands at a public bathroom. I can't recall who that was.

yeah I know about Jerry Kramer's..he found it after it came up for auction years later.

  3. While not exclusively a football or super bowl auction, I believe the Goldin auctions event is heavily tilted toward football.

Hunt will have a super bowl themed auction that should finish up the day before the big game. I hope they have some rings too!

And Leland's current auction has a lot of baseball and one old-AFL championship ring in it's auction, that ends January 10th.

I was disappointed with Lelands..a lot of baseball this auction.

  4. Dralec, you bring up some great points!

As a collector the buyout does not effect me. I wonder if prices will rise for the teams? It's well known that these ring companies break or lose money on the rings as a way to show off and market the rings. They do make money when players and staff buy pendants, and other items. And when allowed make a ton of money on fan rings!

On the major league level, Herff Jones does very little work (they did the colts twice in the last ten years) and Tiffany has carved out a nice piece of business (Bucs, super bowl 37, Giants Superbowl 42 and 46, Saints #44, Redskins #26) and the buyout is probably a nice opportunity for Tinffany. Masters of Design is not up to the quality of the companies already mentioned.

Herff Jones does class rings for a lot of colleges (including most of Arizona State's class rings) as well. Nothing that they've done has shown me anything at all. I'm hoping when I do graduate I can get something through Jostens instead.

As much as I love sports team championship rings, I could never see myself dropping that kinda cash on someone else's jewelry. It'd be a gem to own (and I'm certainly not knocking collecting them. Maybe when I'm making a lot of money, I'd do the same!), but it'd be so much nicer to actually earn one.

Hell, now that I think about it, that's probably bucket list item #1 for me.

I'd rather drop 50k on a super bowl ring I can wear than babe Ruth's jersey that sold for 4.4 million.

Don't forget diamond cutters. Their dallas ring was top notch

  6. Sports-rings is that a real ravens ring?

how about that super bowl 1 ring that a players?

Yes it is! First time ever I negotiated a purchase before the ring was given to the player! I still went through a lot of ups and downs before finally acquiring it.

Thanks for calling me a walking encyclopedia. The real encyclopedia title belongs to Scott Welkowsky in California. Every time I have a question, he has an answer.

  7. i don't have a problem with teams that put only one trophy to represent that championship, or the lakers using the amount of trophies to represent multiple years because it would be ridiculous to put 16 trophies on a ring, but when you are a team like the heat that only have 3 it should either put one trophy to represent that single championship or put all three to show the franchises success

to your point though look at the pistons ring above it only has one trophy yet they to have 3 championships. In the end it's up to the team not players.

  8. Ridenlow you are right, skipped my mind as the ring does not look that big compared to other ones but I believe as the only platinum ring it is heavier than the 10K and the 14 K rings.

yup the packers ring was the first and still the only to use platinum. I had a chance to talk to Charles Woodson once about it and he said it's so big that it gives him Calais' on the inside of his middle and pinky fingers.
