I believe it was 1996 that the Jags had the Santa hat on the Jaguar head.
I'm not sure, but I think the Bears may have also had a Santa hat on their logo around the same time.

Oh yeah, just remembered a way to implement the midfield rebound net suggested by @darkpiranha
One of those overhead trusses arenas normally use for special lighting for UFC or WWE events and maybe have the scoreboard raised a few dozen feet.

That looks like a great start! What about field markings?
Here are some rough diagrams.
First, outdoor...
And indoor...
Once we agree on the markings, then we can figure out where logos and advertising can go.
2 hours ago, Darknes said:If I can chime in, I like the look of the Indoor more than the outdoor. Just seems like it'd fit better.
Maybe for outdoor we can nix the rebound nets and just have one big net between the stands and the field. Whaddaya say?
-
Good idea.
Now here are some rough diagrams for the goal setups...
Outdoor...
Indoor...

Once we get everything else figured out, next to decide would be what year and how many teams to begin with for both the outdoor and indoor versions of the game.
For the indoor game, should the bench areas be inside the dasher boards...
Or outside the dasher boards?
-
Possible terms for positions once we agree on how many to a side for indoor and outdoor....

Midfielder
Wing
Quarter/Half/Full/Nickel/Dime Back
Forward
Defenseman/Defenceman
Guard
Tackle
Split/Tight/Loose End
Flanker
Striker
Safety
Rover
Jammer
Blocker
PivotGoalie (if necessary)
Possible terms for officials...
Referee
Umpire
Linesman
Scoring Judge
Replay Judge
Field Judge
Timekeeper

How about two midfield boards/targets, placed up high, like 10 or 15 feet up, that players can attempt to bounce the ball off of as they advance into the opponent's zone? Think of it like the size of a basketball backboard, minus the net, but about ten to fifteen feet high. You can advance it just by running, but if you successfully bounce it off the midfield sideboard, you get a point. So you could do it as simply as a sort of basketball layup bounce pass to yourself, or you can really launch one from far away and bounce it to a teammate.
(I know this is a bit goofy, but if I fully believe that if one is going to create or frankenstein together a new sport, they should have a nice variety of new things in it you haven't seen in a dozen other sports a million times.)
Maybe that could work in the indoor version of the game. But would these targets be hoisted from the rafters, or could they be attatched somehow to the plexiglass the arena would keep up for box lacrosse and indoor soccer? Or something similar to the Arena football screens?
If you're thinking of outdoor, maybe they could be like backstops in baseball?
Here are some fields for comparison to try to get the right mix, and also designate places where team logos can go...
American...
Gaelic...
Aussie Rules...

Next we'll need...
- Playing field.
- Number of players on the field for each team
- Roster size
- Advancing the ball.
- Time of play: (quarters or halves?)

That's it! Thanks.
And I'm guessing the rebound nets can be put in the "wide" areas. Maybe in a condensed/indoor version of the game?
-
And for this Aussie/US hybrid, whatever we end up calling it...
Which ball would we use?
The giant ones used down under...
Or the pebble grained leather more common in the States?

Maybe something like Aussie Rules Football? It has unique rules.
Cool.
Kinda like a revival of this, right?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austus
What I want to do is a game that combines maybe those two with probably one other minus all the play stoppages for huddles to make for a faster pace of play.
As for equipment, I would like helmets that could be something like these...
Unless of course, it is preferable to stick to the classics...
Besides headgear, maybe the Aussie jumpers with a shoulder pad vest that can be worn on top?
As for scoring, I want to be able to amalgamate the Gaelic, Arena and Aussie rules goalposts. How many points could each spot be worth?...
Still not sure if I want a rectangular or oval field.
As for a storyline, maybe regular American ball falls by the wayside in favor of whatever becomes of this brainstorming session.

Hmm...
Which other games can American football be combined with to make a fictional sport?
-
Sorry to dig this back up...
Trying to think of a way to combine American football with Gaelic football, handball, and a little bit of Arena football into a fictional game.
The backstory I want to create is one where whatever this fictional game ends up being called supplants American football early in the twentieth century.
From American, I want to bring in helmets, uniforms, the forward pass, the touchdown and the field goal.
From Gaelic I want to bring in that cool looking goal/net apparatus, the longer field and the different scoring methods.
From Arena I want to bring in those rebound nets with the scoring area in the middle.
From Handball and Gaelic, I want to bring in the rounder ball and the faster, continuous action without all the starts and stops of American football.
Just a rough idea, though I will incorporate any suggestions you guys might have.

What would be the optimal number of teams to start with when starting a fictional series?
6 teams, 8 teams or 10 teams?
And also, is there a database of cities and nicknames we can all refer to when coming up with team names?

So I take it the Packers don't color in the green part of the midfield logo since the grass is already green? Makes sense I guess.
I believe the San Diego text had been gold in the years leading up to the 1987 field you just posted. Also, there had been a time, in home games after baseball season, when they would have bolts pointing towards the kickoff lines instead of a regular X right on the lines.

Pretty sad to see the Aces up and leave. Especially since they and the old Gulls used to have a little bit of a rivalry in the WCHL and later the ECHL.

Jets and Skins circa 1978...
-
Also in those earlier Blitz games, I'm pretty sure the Chargers' road uniform had solid blue socks instead of the white socks with the thin blue stripes.
The N64 version I think had the Jets in the early-mid 90's uniforms even though they already went back to the Broadway Joe look by the time the console versions came out.

Pretty good concept for the Panthers. I'd like to see how the white jersey would look with blue pants and black socks.
