I was typing a pre-emptive "Before @CreamSoda says anything, I'm excited for the Avs to lean into the Rockies' identity" response right as I got the "New post from @CreamSoda" notification.

The Avs can have the Rockies' identity because it's so heavily intertwined with the market they play in. Just like how the Jets 2.0 can use the Jets 1.0's logos and jerseys despite not being from the same technical franchise. The Devils are using the Scouts' identity because aside from the logo, nothing about the jerseys or color palette screams "Kansas City." It's just an old-school hockey template. The RR program is less about direct lineation and more about connection to the city/market a team is playing in.

I'm shocked it's taken this long for one of Colorado's sports teams to embrace the state flag. I'm a native Coloradan, and while it can be tiring seeing the 'C' icon and red/blue/yellow color scheme everywhere, it is admittedly really well-designed. The NHL Rockies' logo is up there with the Whalers in terms of the league's best-ever logos, imo. It'd be a shame for the Avs not to use it.

The NHL Rockies were one of several sports teams to have a beautiful brand but a horrible product on the playing surface. They had a colourful look but a simple look. Unlike the Blues of the late 80's and mid 90's, the Rockies did a great job in utilizing royal blue, yellow-gold, red and white together. The Avs' "Colorado" C fits in nicely with the A-Mountain by having a black circle, aka. a puck, in place of the yellow-gold which represents the sun raising/setting on the State of Colorado.

Kind of a weird choice, I wonder if Oilers fans liked this jersey. Do they have fond memories of this era? It's certainly interesting that without the RR program, we would have almost certainly never seen this design again on an NHL rink

Feels surreal that a jersey from my youth is now old enough to be retro. I'm really getting old lol

The only thing about Oilers' Todd MacFarlane jersey I didn't like was the navy and silver scheme. It was a copycat version of the Kings' Gretzky-era black and silver. However, I'm quite sure there are Oiler fans who still like/love the logo as well as different jersey versions with navy as the primary dark colour. That's why a navy Retro Reverse with the old 3rd jersey logo redone in orange with silver accents would be a hot seller. The Oilers are, thankfully, returning to their classic 80's royal blue primary and using a recoloured Todd MacFarlane logo on navy would blend a couple of Oiler eras together. If it does become very popular, the Oilers could eventually make it a future 3rd.

    I wanted this Johnny

I also prefer the current skating Johnny Canuck but as a Reverse Retro, the original WHL version had to be used.  That's the JC logo that was used back on their early 60's sweaters along with the striping.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a future navy blue or a green 3rd jersey with the current version of JC.

What exactly does basketball designed sweaters mean?

Well, it's very simple. Look at most basketball jerseys, NBA, NCAA and high school and then look at the WHL Canucks ' mid to late 60's jerseys and as the Dallas Stars'  original Rebook Edge jerseys.  Look at the similarities.

  5. 7 hours ago, uniformity said:

The new logo is based on the fake WHL logo and looks pretty meh. That said, this looks like yet another spinoff off the 60s WHL version and the legs look too large.

I'm a Johnny Canuck fan but I would have preferred one of their classic uniforms with the arched Canucks script on the front and JC logo on the shoulders.

I was never a fan of the WHL Canucks' basketball-designed sweaters. Very much like what the Dallas Stars had when they had their original Reebok Edge uniforms.  What the Canucks should have done was either put the Skating Johnny Canuck on the front of a V logo or relegate JC to the shoulders but go back to the original '45-'46 block V with a Millionaires-stylized CANUCKS inside the V.

Overall, the Canucks are finally embracing their WHL heritage with JC on the front in bold navy blue and kelly green colours. This is wonderful to see. Also, the first tie-down collar used by the NHL Canucks. This jersey will be a red-hot seller.

Unlike last year, the Lions didn't put the helmet stripes back on for the start of the regular season.

The only good things about the Lions uniforms over the past two years were their helmets with the white-orange-white stripe and the matching black pants. Now, their current black helmets look like high school helmets...boring and cheap.

Time to bring either one of these helmets back:

Not sure if it means anything, but at the Canucks' prospect camp, the players were wearing pants without the stripes on the side.

Edit: After looking at the Abby Canucks, they don't have stripes on the pants, so I guess that's the reason and the Canucks aren't changing anything.

Besides the cheap Agency font, not having pants striping is the only flaw in the Abby Canucks' uniforms. However, the Canucks' pants whenever they wear their current 3rds also doesn't have the familiar white-green-white stripes. Not a fan of stripeless pants. Looks boring and lazy.

I'd use electric blue over powder, personally; fits the team better thematically and it's a unique shade in the league. Hell, even just a vivid blue would work fine for the Bolts.

Powder really should be reserved for whenever the league expands into Houston.

Powder blue could be several shades of blue...like the Nordiques' powerdry royal blue or the Houston Oilers' powdery sky blue. Electric blue, which I agree with you, @Ridleylash, can be interpreted as a powder blue shade.

I've seen a lot of concepts that did just that and it does look great. But then when you get to the white jersey, that's when the blue and black together get muddy, from the PoV of the viewer watching a game.

This is what I came up with a while ago. There's black on the collar, victory stripes, number outlines, pants, helmets and gloves.

    LopvCgP_d.webp?maxwidth=640&shape=thumb&

Change the blue from royal to a powder blue, put powder blue yokes on the white jerseys and go back to the original logo without the script and it's perfect.

To be completely honest, TB using blue and white without a million little black outlines has been a refreshing color change, compared to their previously stale templates of black and blue where the blue got muddied.

However, Tampa Bay needs some black, to set them apart from playing Maple Leafs dressup. Keep the jerseys intact, but change the pants/helmets to black. They use black on their number and pant bolt outlines. The current TB look is one or two tweaks away from being spot on.

The Lightning could go one of two ways. All they need to do is change their blue from royal to a powdery sky blue....similar to the shade the Atlanta Thrashers' used for their dark jerseys.

Then once the shade of blue is taken care of, here are a couple of ideas that would make the Bolts stand out:

    1. Go back to their classic '04 set. Those black jerseys with the white shoulder yokes stood out beautifully. Their whites with the black yokes were just as nice. The lighter powdery sky blue would pop and wouldn't get muddied with the black.

    2. Though the Bolts looked amazing in black regardless of the Black For Black's Sake era, I felt they blew an opportunity to stand out...like the Sharks did in their original lighter teal. The Lightning could've gone with, as habsfan1 pointed out, black helmets and pants(with the bolt on the sides) and the lighter blue jerseys and socks.

Last but not least, the Lightning need to go back to their original logo but without the "Tampa Bay" script and "Lightning" wordmark. The white bolt with the black drop shadow on the silver circle was perfect enough.

Wouldn't be surprised by a change, but these may yet last for decades:

Buffalo Sabres, Calgary Flames,  Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils, Minnesota Wild, New York Islanders, Pittsburgh Penguins, San Jose Sharks, Seattle Kraken, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, Vegas Golden Knights.

Of course, relocation or a change in ownership can vaporize any team's identity fast, but barring those events, I wondered if you all might have similar thoughts.

I would put the Sabres, Flames and Golden Knights in the "For Sure Forever Done" category. Both the Sabres and the Flames finally learned the lesson, "If it's not broken, don't fix it".  They even took their classic crests up another level by adding extra embroidery to reveal hidden details. This is one of the positive trends in pro sports branding. The Golden Knights nailed their crest like a Mike Bossy-shot-on-goal - threaded the needle on the first shot. Any change to their look is a step back.

I would put the Canucks in the "Change Seems Like It Will Come Sooner Than Later" category. With the ever-growing popularity of the Skate logo, it is highly possible that the Skate takes over from the highly unpopular and corporately-inspired Orca as the primary crest The players, coaches and several people in the organization love it as well as the majority of the fans. It's already rumoured that the black Skate jersey will take over next season as the team's 3rd jersey. If done properly and with a "little" cleaning up, there's no reason why a recoloured Skate cannot take over as the Canucks' primary crest.

New Jersey ideally would have stayed red & green, but they've been red & black for too long to change now. The shoulder yoke does a decent job of separating them from Chicago.

What the Devils should do is go back to the exact template when they had the red & dark green but with black instead of green. There was more red in those uniforms including red yokes on the white jerseys and red helmets to go with the red jerseys. The red jerseys also had more white. And last, the Devils need to put white & red striping on the sides of the pants. Like most of the uniform changes in the 90's including the BFBS movement, teams got super lazy and cheap by removing or not including striping on their new black or navy pants.

I would wait until the regular season begins to see whether the stripes are gone for good.  Last year, they didn't have the stripes during training camp, but they were back on when the regular season started.

    I hope you're right.🤞

  14. I just looked at the BC Lions 2022 marketing campaign and I see that the Lions went cheap again on their helmets by removing the white-orange-white stripe.😒😠 For a team that was almost halfway there into getting their uniforms right, they took a big step backwards because their black helmets with the striping from the past 2 seasons was one of the few nice elements from their look. Those were the best Lions helmets since their 80's  white helmets with the brown-burnt orange-brown stripe.

Now, their stripeless black helmets will look terribly high-schoolish and boring.

The double outline was absolutely necessary on the white jerseys. Blue and red never touched except on the numbers where they bled into each other and looked like crap. It was an absolutely necessary change and the updated (since '97) name and number font is also much better than the thin generic block font they used prior to that

Also, I prefer the darker red because we're the only ones wearing that shade of red. Most people won't even notice that their jerseys are darker than the Red Wings or Flames unless you point it out to them so it's not like it's burgundy or anything

The only thing they need to fix is the chin strap on the blue helmets lol. Make em white instead of black. That's it. Otherwise it's perfect. I wouldn't even touch the mismatching shades of blue on the pants and jerseys. End of rant

Agree to disagree. Lighter shade of red looks a lot better with royal blue helmets and pants.

I hope Montreal eventually goes back, I love the brighter red.

Totally agree. The darker red and royal blue doesn't have as strong of a contrast as the classic lighter red. Also, the Canadiens need to go back to the single red outline around their blue font on their whites. There was no need to update on of the most timeless uniforms in pro sports history.

Not many people seem to have noticed (or remember?) but the Canucks were actually black, yellow and reddish orange from '79 to 1991-92. They only changed to a true red in 1992-93

    spacer.png

    spacer.png

I get why the throwback uses red trim ('94 Cup Finals) but I wish they had used the orange version instead. It looked much better imo

I didn't mind the changing of the orange to red. The red gave that uniform more of a 🍁Canadian🍁 feel. Before '82, the Canucks' "red" was more of an actual red but an orangey-red.

What I hated about the '92 update was the changing of the yellow-gold/Athletic gold to that eggnog yellow that one season before slightly deepening it the following year. I also disliked the removal of the yellow-gold and red trimming from around the legs of the pants. That was a unique feature and it looked great when the Canucks wore their blacks. Two of several screwups by CCM with the Canucks.

  18. I haven't been this proud to be a Canucks fan in an extremely long time until last night. Not only because the Canucks thrashed a longtime divisional rival but they looked great in doing it too. For me, the return of the black Skate uniform wasn't so much about the beautiful black, red and yellow colour scheme. It was about the Canucks wearing a Canucks hockey crest with the classic block font instead of the corporately-inspired Orca with the cheap Checkmark in Rink and bland Agency font. Many, many fans want the black Skate back full-time. If it did, I wouldn't lose a minute of sleep. However, even as a huge Skate supporter, the Canucks can't keep leapfrogging back-and-forth between colour schemes. The BC-themed blue and green scheme needs to stay. It was very wrong to ditch them in the first place. However, the Orca has long overstayed its welcome and the Checkmark in Rink is a bastardized of the classic Stick in Rink.

Here's what the Canucks can do to unite the majority of the fan base:

Option 1: A recoloured Skate in navy blue, white and green as the primary crest. I would even make the Skate level to avoid the downhill criticism. Navy blue is intimidating and with the green, it maintains the BC look. The Hartford Whalers are long gone and no other NHL franchise uses the beautiful blue and green look. Johnny Canuck would be on the shoulders and as the primary on a green 3rd...similar to AHL Abbotsford.

Option 2: Keep the Skate in black, yellow and red as what the overwhelming majority want but only as a regular 3rd. In order to keep the blue and green as the primary colour scheme, make the original Stick in Rink the primary home and away crest. Johnny Canuck on the shoulders of all jerseys in respective colours.

There are a number of good options but we Canucks fans need to be flexible. The only dealbreakers are the corporately-inspired Orca, Checkmark in Rink and cheap Agency font.

I was never a fan of the idea of the Canucks in green, but this looks too good for them to not wear, especially if it can replace their current dud third jerseys. I'm not a fan of this EXACT template but it look so sharp on the ice.

    spacer.png

I absolutely 💚LOVE💙 this look and not just because of Johnny Canuck.  The Canucks can easily own this green jersey/blue helmets-pants combo. As for the template, I agree. I would even use the original two same coloured stripes with the white V's on the sleeve stripes but with the blue and green reversed. I would also add white to the outside of the two blue stripes.

I absolutely love that two-tone red look. Matter of fact, when the Devils ditched their dark green secondary colour, switching to a two-tone red look instead of jumping on the Chicago Bulls red & black bandwagon would have been a wise move. No team in major pro sports that I can think of uses two-tone red.
