They've already said the name and colors are off limits

Then no matter what the new crest ends up looking like, the rave green will still end up dragging their identity down considerably. I get why they don’t wanna change it, and I’m sure some Sounders fans would riot if they did, but it’s a really ugly shade to keep as their signature color and has never paired well with their shade of blue either.

  2. Here are the group stage kit assignments for Argentina and Brazil as well:

Refreshingly normal for the most part. I’ll be interested to see the red/blue/blue keeper kit mashup for Mexico against Argentina. Also, seems like an odd choice to have Brazil in blue against the green of Cameroon. Cameroon’s green is a shade between kelly and forest green, so it seems like Brazil’s yellow would’ve been a better shirt contrast.

  3. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: just ditch the rave green. The crest absolutely is in need of an update (it was the moment it was revealed, tbh), but the rave green is the worst part of their brand IMO. I’d say it’s probably the worst primary color in MLS, or at least bottom-2 with Nashville. Could be as simple as tweaking it to make it more of a true lime green like the Seahawks (still bad, but not puke-colored bad), changing it to something in between the Seahawks’ green and Austin FC’s gorgeous green, or a radical change like moving to city flag teal like @Digby mentioned.

  4. Cal isn’t just breaking out gold helmets for the 125th Big Game, but a whole new uniform complete with the Stanford Axe on the chest and pants:

Put a navy/gold/navy stripe on the helmets and pants and this would be a fantastic full-time look for the Golden Bears (obviously with the axe removed, as well).

I would assume (I don't know for sure so take my opinion for what it's worth) that the Blazers could pay the NCAA for any court used at the Moda Center (after all, the NCAA never says no to free cash). If all these courts are being repurposed, including other alternate courts around the league, then it's already a sustainable practice. Even if the Blazers had an alternate court for a year and donated it to a small budget college in Oregon it would be pretty beneficial.

Even if they could pay the NCAA for the court, I doubt they would (I personally think the NCAA probably keeps the courts and ships ‘em out to the sites). I just really don’t think we’ll see the Blazers do an alternate court. Again, if there’s a special court for the Phil Knight Invitational in a couple weeks then maybe they could repurpose that court. I’m just really doubtful, though. I’d be very curious to know what happens with other teams’ alternate courts. I would hope teams that have had multiple alternate designs over the years repurpose them from year to year. Even if they do, having alternate courts is an inherently less sustainable practice than only having one court. Whether because of the sustainability factor or the optics of the sustainability factor, I genuinely do not expect the Blazers to do an alternate court.

It’d be nice if Oregon used this as a teaching moment as to why picking uniforms before the season even starts is a bad idea.

Also, I’d absolutely kill for schools to actually get on the phone and talk out uniform choices before deciding. It’s painful how many matchups we get like this where you have both teams wearing white helmets when neither usually wears white helmets. A simple call could solve that problem. How many perfect uniform combo matchups do we miss out on annually because schools don’t communicate?

Huh? I’m sorry, but that just doesn’t make any sense. What, you wanted the Ducks to wait to find out what the Utes were wearing before deciding what they should wear as the home team for this matchup?

If anything, it should be the opposite. In soccer, for example, the home team selects their kit first and it’s up to the opponent to pick a contrasting kit (sometimes even needing to wear alternate shorts or socks to avoid a clash). Now I definitely agree with your second point; if schools got on the phone with each other to communicate their uni choices then we’d avoid situations like this. The reality is, unless it’s something like a color vs. color or the home team is planning to wear white or light gray, then the schools probably don’t care about what the other team is gonna wear.

The Blazers had three different courts from 2018-2021. The 2019-20 court was the 2018-19 court but stripped and repainted, but I think the 20-21 court was brand new. Since the Moda Center hosted March Madness in 2022, the Blazers could have taken the 2022 NCAA tournament court and repurposed it. Alternate courts wouldn’t be too wasteful if they were repainted every year too.

The 20/21-present court is still the same physical court as the last two versions. The press release from when it was released made sure to note that: “The Trail Blazers resurfaced the 2019-20 50th Anniversary Season court to this new design”.

The press release for the 2019/20 court said the same thing and even hinted at the sustainability factor: “The 50th anniversary court is actually just last year's court sanded and repainted, perhaps as a nod to the team's sustainability efforts”

FWIW, I don’t even think the Blazers would get to keep the NCAA tournament court since they’re not scheduled to host again. It probably gets sent back to the NCAA so they can repurpose it. The Moda Center is hosting the Phil Knight Invitational in a couple weeks, so IF there’s a special court for that then maybe they could repurpose it for a future court. I personally doubt they would, though, and doubt an alternate court will be seen anytime soon.

Noting that the replica City kit up on MLSStore.com has no yellow trim on the collar and no trim at all on the sleeve cuffs, plus no yellow taping down the sides/across the back hem and no blue side panels. Yellow trim on the hem goes all the way around instead of just across the back.

    Authentic:

    Replica:

I mean, poor quality replicas are nothing new, but this feels really egregious.

The replica does actually have the yellow taping down the sides and only around the back hem. You can kind of see it in the pics you posted if you look closely, but you can get a better sense on the kids’ jerseys here:

Don’t get me wrong, there are still way too many disparities between the authentic and replica MLS shirts, but at least the side/back hem taping does appear to be there. Should mean that all of the new MLS shirts for this year will have that detail on the authentics & replicas.

Why does Oregon have to ruin every uniform matchup, not that these are bad uniforms but cmon wear yellow/green/yellow, green/green/yellow, or even just green/green/green for these big matchups.

Oregon picks out their uni combos well before the season even starts, so when they picked this look for this game they had no way of knowing the Utes would choose all-white. I’d argue this would’ve been a fantastic choice for this game (one of the better possible choices, in fact) had the Utes gone with something like red/white/red or some other combo with red or black helmets and pants. I do get your point, but it’s not like the Ducks found out the Utes were going all-white and then decided on this look.

Blazers missed the opportunity to put the carpet pattern in the paint. How do you make a jersey based on a carpet and then don't have the carpet pattern anywhere on the court?!

I don’t disagree purely in terms of aesthetics, but I don’t think we’ll see the Blazers do an alternate court anytime soon. The Blazers have been one of the most sustainable professional sports teams in the U.S. and have continuously been working to launch new sustainability initiatives in recent years. Their arena was the first arena to receive LEED Gold certification and later the first to earn O+M Platinum certification. There are other arenas that have since achieved varying levels of LEED certification, but the Blazers organization as a whole has been at the forefront of sustainability efforts in American professional sports. Alternate courts are wasteful by nature, so having one would be a pretty glaring inconsistency with the Blazers’ track record of sustainability efforts.

  11. This could very well mean nothing (just like USC posting the retro-themed stuff on social media a couple weeks ago), but interesting from Cal nonetheless:

Wouldn’t shock me if they break out the gold helmets with the Cal script logo for the Big Game, like an updated version of the ‘78-80 lids:

They already have the shells for the Roth throwbacks, so they could easily do a decal swap and remove or replace the center striping.

The two are interconnected 😉 On the face of it, the uniform in question clashes with the Blazers' established identity and references really annoying trends in the design world.

It's also bottom of the barrel scraping to reference airport carpet.

But for Portland it’s really not. Which is the whole point.

I think that the explosion of uniform media, for lack of a better term, has tricked people into thinking everything needs to mean something. Why do the Dodgers wear read numbers on the front of their jerseys when everything else is blue? 'cause it looks good, and someone realized that back in the day and made it happen. But if it came out these days? There would be a paragraph about how it represents "the passion of Los Angeles" or "the SoCal sunset" or "the red brick of the Bradbury building." It's all so ridiculous. Whatever happened to "well we thought this would look good so we did that"?

A side effect of this is that people think criticism needs to be deep. Certain NHL fans were insistent on that. "You don't like this jersey? BUT YOU LIKE THIS OTHER THING THAT'S LIKE IT! Explain!"

And it's like... "no man, I just don't like this."

And that's where I'm at here. The colour scheme of the PDX jersey is nice, and fitting for Portland... but unfortunately we have ~50 years of Blazers basketball in red, black, and white that make teal and forest green not particularly appropriate. So on a base level? I just don't like it.

Which is where the "dumb" stuff comes from. It's me just not overthinking any of this. I hear "the airport carpet is a big deal" and my first response is "what the heck?" It strikes me as... well... dumb. I'm sorry. I don't mean to insult you or your city or your team even... but that's my honest reaction. I've never heard of the idea of making carpet a local "landmark," much less this specific case, and it's just very, very odd to me.

And to then take that and tie it into a uniform that, frankly, clashes with the team's established identity? It's just more reasons I dislike it.

I'm sorry my critique wasn't more nuanced for your tastes, and I'm truly, legitimately sorry if anything I've said made you think I had anything against you personally, your hometown, or your team. I don't. At all. It's just my opinion on uniforms. That's all.

Nothing you’ve said has legitimately made me think you had something against me, Portland, the Blazers, etc. My one “did somebody from Portland hurt you as a child” post was meant in jest but in retrospect in poor taste.

And I'll say I think you're being incredibly thin skinned and petulant for assuming my unfamiliarity with your hometown's airport carpet, or some niche nickname, means I have something against you, your team, or Portland.

Not knowing about the carpet beforehand? That’s fine, I’m sure a lot of people didn’t know about and/or don’t know about still. I just think it’s childish and, to borrow a phrase from you, “thin-skinned” to go back to the same “it’s dumb” rhetoric over and over again even after people like @Digby and @pepis21 have explained its significant and relevance to Portland and why it was an appropriate theme for this year’s City Edition. Same thing as your disdain for the “RipCity” nickname; even after I and several other folks on here explained how it was something that came about and grew naturally, “it’s dumb” was really your only prevailing argument.
